2nd Annual Acoustic Kook Jam tomorrow
U-T:
Fiddlers, strummers and other acoustic string musicians are invited to gather at the Cardiff Kook statue Wednesday afternoon for the second annual New Year’s Day Splash Jam.
As many as 100 musicians are expected to turn up at the loosely organized jam, which will begin at 2 p.m. with a group performance that will begin with three folk standards: “Bile ’em Cabbage Down,” “Cripple Creek” and “Old Joe Clark.”
The first Splash Jam — held in Cardiff on Jan. 1, 2013 — was a fluke, but it was so popular with the musicians and public, it’s coming back this year, said Encinitas fiddler R. Avery Ellison.
Gus Vina will be there playing his harp.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a fiddle.
ReplyDeleteSounds cool.
ReplyDeleteLet 2014 be the year Encinitas rids itself of the tax drain Sad Sac!
ReplyDeleteNumber one Goal 2014: Fire Vina!
Number two goal 2014: Hire a good City Manager
Yes, the acoustic jam sounds great.
ReplyDeleteHere's a great fireworks link for the new year:
London Fireworks 2014
At the jam today...as were Barth and Shaffer.
ReplyDeleteQuite telling was Shaffer enjoying, and lip synching to a cover of the Stones'....You Can't Always Get What You WANT (emphasis hers).
And did I see a smug little laugh about it with Barth as well?....absolutely.
And were you reading what you wanted into seeing them sing along, yes you were.
ReplyDeleteDo these people have a permit?? Insurance?? Bonded?? Who cleans up the trash left behind?? Where do people park?? How many crossed the RR tracks illegally to attend this event?? Seems to me this type of event encourage drinking and drugs. Is this a EHC approved event?? Does Marco know of this?? Where was he while this was going on ?? Who owns the kook?? Did this group pay to use it's image ?? Would they meet there w/o the kook?? Wouldn't this have been a safer event if they had met at the tiki ?? Will they offer up a check for $20K to the city for a new lifeguard tower ??
ReplyDeleteJust a few Q 's for the new year.....
Are you kidding?!? I was there and here's what I experienced. I crossed at the crosswalks with other people. No one was running across the RR tracks. Not one person was drinking or seemed drunk, but maybe that was alcohol in the Starbucks paper cup. Most of the people were "of a certain age," not that age should be a factor in enjoying music. Trash -- what trash would there have been. No one was eating. We stood there for about 45 minutes with the glorious sun on our faces and listened and sang along to some fun-loving musicians of all ages and instruments volunteer their talents on a beautiful New Year's Day. It was a wonderful community sharing of joy. I suggest you try it.
DeleteNo I'm not kidding. So there was no cover for those sun challenged. Does this city sponsored event open them to litigation for falling to provide cover?? A few more questions for the new year.
DeleteMusic encourages drinking and drugs? Did Tipper Gore move to Encinitas? Jeez, doom and gloom....
ReplyDeleteMusic encourages drinking and drugs??? Are you kidding me?? Obviously you never attended a Grateful Dead show. And btw, the stoners, hippies and alchies were more entertaining that the fucking dead.
Delete12:44, completely true. I was way more into watching hippies dance like dervishes than hear the Dead play out of tune...

ReplyDeleteYes, I absolutely was. Based on their public personnas on on Wednesday nights, seemed extremely plausible. Just gave me that warm and fuzzy feeling.
On the other hand, why wasn't the City ripping down the Kooks 'trappings' in front of us all? It was great, to be sure, and glad they didn't, but a little 'selective enforcement' from the City, wouldn't you say?
