Tony is back with a new idea for increasing tourism.
On next week's agenda:
SUBJECT: Proclamation to establish “Spock Block” for one week, March 26 – April 1, 2015
INTRODUCTION OF IDEA: On February 27, 2015, Leonard Nimoy, the actor known as the original Mr. Spock in the Star Trek television and movie franchise, died at the age of 83. The Spock character’s heritage was half human and half Vulcan, which means that one of the oldest streets in Encinitas, Vulcan Avenue, has something in common with Spock — a name.
I would propose that this Council declare in a proclamation that the Civic Center and Library block, from Vulcan Avenue and Cornish Drive to D and E streets, be called “Spock Block” for the week of March 26 – April 1, 2015. This would coincide with what would have been Nimoy’s birthday on March 26th.
The purpose of this proclamation would be to encourage anyone who enjoyed Mr. Spock and the Star Trek series to come to our city to celebrate the life of Mr. Nimoy. Businesses would be encouraged to welcome Trekkies, as they’re known, to put on a pair of pointed ears and greet people with the Vulcan “V” sign and the saying Spock made famous: “Live Long and Prosper.”
Creativity and having fun would be the main objective, something that would have appealed to the human side of Mr. Spock.
DIRECTION TO STAFF: Prepare the proclamation and set up a public address system so that Mayor Gaspar can read the proclamation in a public ceremony at the lower parking lot on the corner of Vulcan Avenue and E Street, March 26th, at a time to be determined.

Bunch of hard hats and neon vests digging up the roots of the iconic Canary Island Date Palm in the middle of Moonlight Beach right now.
ReplyDeleteIn a few months, will they say the tree is sick?
Please send in a picture
DeleteThe digging activity is construction related - the palm now has a concrete ring and sidewalk around it. They severed at least 3 feet of the root ball all around to accommodate placement of the ring. It is a mystery as to why the hardhats were on the crane boom looking at the crown of the palm - it does look unusually flat, when it should have a vertical spike of new frons coming up.
DeleteThe Canary Island palm is susceptible to a fatal fungal disease (Fusarium wilt), generally spread by the use of contaminated pruning equipment. The fungus enters thru cut frons or roots - if the shovels they used were "dirty", this tree could have been exposed to the fungus. The disease is prevalent in San Diego County and has already infected many hundreds (or more) of trees, necessitating removal - there is no cure.
Hopefully the City didn't jeopardize this iconic palm for minor ornamentation.
What?! Damn. Is this the money from the park construction water discharge at work? Half of the fine went to remove non-native species, and it specifically said Canary Island palms in the article. What an iconic symbol of Encinitas. Whoever decides this stuff must have no soul.
ReplyDeleteIf that tree comes down, I will be pissed. Fricken Tony- We don't need any more stinking tourists. Encinitas markets itself. Do something good today and save the iconic tree.
ReplyDeleteTree is much nicer than that cheesy $5 million dollar snack snack waste of money.
Tony has lost it. This is right up there Christie Guerins "Encinitas Rocks" PR idea. No, it's worse. Way worse.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile our streets are falling apart.....
ReplyDeleteI think it's kind of cool. Our own little Comic Con, only Spockacon, right here.
ReplyDeleteas our infrastructure crumbles.
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable ! What an idiotic idea; was he a passenger in that Uber car the other day?
ReplyDeleteIt's one of the very few things Kranz can do without having a developer handler calling the shots.
ReplyDeleteI agree: make yourself useful Tony and save that tree. Unless, of course, your leash is too short for that kind of public service.
Does Kranz have pointy ears now? Maybe the Council can adopt the spread finger salute for the official hand sign of the city!
ReplyDeleteOne can only hope most of this council gets abducted by aliens.
As it relates to, Kranz is joining Muir on that other planet.
ReplyDeleteTK should fly a little higher than this. His position comes with the power to elevate important topics for public debate. This one was wasted. Not a terrible idea, just too small bore to waste council oxygen on. This is the kind of idea you whisper into the ear of DEMA or some other local interest group. Let them bring it to council as their own idea. At least preserve the illusion that out elected leaders are staying focused on the most important stuff.
ReplyDeleteAs God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!
DeleteIt was almost as though they were organized.
DeleteAs it relates to Spock, when I read the summary of that agenda item, I thought it meant Dr. Benjamin Spock. As it relates to why Tony wants Trekkies in Encinitas, I think it means he watched Star Trek a lot. As it relates to Vulcan Ave. having anything to do with Mr. Spock, that's a stretch. As it relates to vulcanizing rubber, it involves heat and sulfur. As it relates to commenting on this blog, I'm done for now.
ReplyDeleteLive long and sell out to the developers.
ReplyDeleteDalakranz… almost as funny as the original. and will also be a one term pony.
ReplyDeleteLets see if he ends up breaking laws like the original.
Ends up??
DeleteThey call him one-term Tony
ReplyDeleteHe turned out to be a phony
He's oh so full of baloney
The developer is his crony
He's a one-trick pony
He's in it for the money
He wants more upzony
That's one-term Tony
Poetic Vulcan mind meld!
DeleteEncinitas rap!
Delete10:49, I'm with you. It's a brilliant idea. And what a bunch of sour graped dullards thinking its not. I can't think of one idea any other council member has ever had as creative. In Encinitas, thousands can say they live on Vulcan. I like the idea. Its long overdue and so,,, logical.
ReplyDeleteMore like stupid.
DeleteNo vision, 4:04
DeleteI see dumb people.
DeleteIt's one thing to have incapable people at city hall, a whole new level to have someone inebriated enough to actually propose an idea like this.
DeleteIts original; creative; involves anyone willing to participate; its low cost; promotes local commerce; honors a fictional hero who's a healthy role model, but most of all its fun - something 6:02 sadly lacks in her diet. We get it: you don't like Tony.
DeleteIn 6:02's defense -many don't like Tony. He has proven himself to fit much too easily into the bureaucrat's life, where time is not of the essence and the very last thing you want to do is rock the boat, especially if developers are on board.
Delete3:10, In Tony's defense. He's by far better to have as our representative on the NCTD board than was the former councilman who did little and blocked much. IF at-grade crossings can be done here, Tony's the man to facilitate that. Already, NCTD had been allowing parking on both sides of the tracks through Encinitas as well as killing goathead thorns. So I blame Tony "as it relates to" those things.
DeleteFrom the UT article:
ReplyDelete"Kranz said Gaspar told him she has a Star Trek costume and might be willing to wear it if she’s encouraged to do so."
A deeper glimpse into the private life of the mayor than we ever asked for?
I would rather that the council place the Housing Element as their first priority and actually read the horrible work that Planning and consultants gave them last week. It is 400 pages of recycled garbage for which we were charged $200,000.
ReplyDeleteI thought that an "in house" housing element meant that the 30 Planning staff members would be doing their own work for a change?? Why have they brought back MIG information that was rejected and brought back the MIG housing consultant?
Why does our council accept Plannings and Murphys substandard performance? They farm out as much of their work as possible at great cost so one wonders just what are they doing down there besides collecting their high buck overpaid salaries.
ReplyDeleteWill council ever demand more from them and not just thank them for all their hard[ly] work? No evidence, as of yet. What a cushy job for them to have.
Council, clean your house and demand more from Murphy and Planning and start showing them the door.
How their work can be acceptable is beyond comprehension. Wake the heck up!
