Wow!
We didn't think Kristin Gaspar would seek higher office so soon, but Logan Jenkins says he has the goods: Escondido Mayor Sam Abed is too conservative for the district and is having trouble fundraising. Assemblyman Brian Maienschein isn't running. Nor is San Diego Councilman Mark Kersey. Which leaves Gaspar.
It makes sense once you think about it. A positive, moderate woman to go after the moderate and female vote against the hostile-work-environment tarnished Dave Roberts (or whoever replaces him on the Dem side). She doesn't have a lot of accomplishments to run on, but who needs accomplishments these days? Gaspar has to be the favorite in this race at this point if she gets enough support from the county GOP machine to edge Abed out of the primary.
What's this mean for Encinitas? A much lower chance of the Republicans re-taking the city council majority any time soon. They couldn't come up with a single new viable candidate in 2014; how are they going to find two winning newbies in 2016?
Kristin Gaspar might make a good county supervisor.

She doesn't have a lot to stake her claim with, and she's not exactly a public speaker of depth. I'm not a huge Dave Roberts fan, but he gets the nod with me over Barbie....

I agree…. kranz wasted $13 million in DEBT on a $4 million dollar property and a stinking lifeguard tower that should not be located in the beach sand area anyway.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't discount Lerchbacker so quickly. Although he has not been seen at city council meetings or other city meetings, with possible open seats he could squeak in if he runs, and Shaffer doesn't run, and Gaspar runs for county supervisor instead of city mayor. If Kranz runs for mayor, that could mean two vacant council seats.

All you have to do is take shit from a lot of people; show up 3 Weds. evenings a month and stay for God knows how long; read stuff because staff doesn't; let Sabine give you bad advice; get the City sued; I could go on. Who wants the job? What's the payoff?

DeleteGaspar could run in the primary for County Supervisor. If she wins 50+ percent, there will be no general. If she comes first or second with no one getting 50%, she will run the in general. It's a pretty safe proposition for Gaspar to run in the primary. If she loses, she can still run for mayor.
ReplyDeleteThe Republican establishment knows all it takes is money to win seats in Encinitas. Leerch need not be involved to win a seat or the mayorship (Gaspar never was). He came very close last time with a very late campaign effort. They can find another 2-3 candidates to run as a slate.
On the other side will be a moderate establishment and the crazies. They will fight among each other and the developers will win.
This is the way it's been most of the time since incorporation.
Accurate assessment....glossy mailers and signs - that's all it takes to win local elections.

DeleteMy guess for her running is she needs more money so she can be treated in her accustomed manner. Must be hard paying all those physical therapist employees and her and her husband's salary. By the end of the day, it will not be worth any amount of money. Her lack of politics will be noticed quickly.
