[Planning Commissioner Kevin Doyle] worried aloud about the lack of parking downtown, about the crowds that would flock to the proposed Modern Times tasting room, and tipped his hand that he’d vote against the proposal, all but sealing its fate.
"I'm not happy for anybody," Doyle said. "This situation is unfortunate. This is not an easy issue to wrap our heads around. This whole issue has really torn me up."
And then, his thinking turned. Fellow commissioners Greg Drakos and Al Apuzzo doubled down on their stance that Modern Times was everything the city could want in a property owner. Doyle changed course, sending up a round of applause from one half of the packed room.

Modern Times tasting room survives 3-2 vote
Del Mar Times:
Good for Modern Times - they have proven to be responsible biz owners at their other locations. Let's see them prove themselves here. That location is horrible for retail anyway.
ReplyDeleteThere is no parking in the area for an establishment like this. It will overflow into the adjacent neighborhoods, impacting those businesses already in the area and the local residents. The Sheriff's Department was against it, because of the heavy concentration of liquor licenses already in that area
Deleteand the inordinately high service calls for issues directly relating to liquor induced incidents. Just because these are "reliable" business owners is irrelevant - another liquor business will only exacerbate the downtown problems. The Planning Commission failed in their responsibility to consider the impact of yet another alcohol retailer in the trouble zone.
Sounds like the "fix" was in.
Only thing proven is this planners absolute lack of integrity.
ReplyDeleteYOU lack integrity to not understand what a tasting room is. Beer, booze and bars are where the majority of Americans aged 21 to 40 (mostly European Americans who represent 70% today used to be 90% in 1970) socialize and meet their husbands and wives. If you don't drink maybe you should move to somewhere where alcohol is more tightly policed as it's obvious you like a lot of policing in your life and may even be unAmerican or you simply want to control and dominate peoples lives?
DeleteThe Planning Department said they could not support this. The Planning Commission disagreed even though the Sheriff said it was too much.
DeleteIt's all about revenue. The PC has its marching orders....
DeleteMakes a batch of popcorn, awaiting the predictions of perdition from the Encinitas Taliban
ReplyDeleteMore alcohol without food downtown. It's like pouring water on a drowning man.
ReplyDelete32 more taps on 101 should really add to our vibrancy (i.e. violent crime rate and noise code violations). Can't wait for the brewery trend to jump the shark. Didn't all the hipsters like Encinitas better before it became "cool"? Sell-outs!
ReplyDeleteNot enough taps and WAY too much yoga. I suggest a moratorium on yoga gyms, I mean how many more libtards can downtown withstand? I do have to admit though that my teenage boys LOVE heading downtown and camping our outside the hot yoga gyms so that they can perv out on all of the sweat and camel toes that pour out of these joints. NO MORE YOGA. These people don't drink and should move to India is they have any real integrity!
DeleteI support a responsible business going into a blighted building downtown. Modern Time tasting rooms in San Diego do not cause noise or drunks to be on the street. I believe they are closing by 10PM. In their location there will be no one to disturb if they made noise. Some bloggers need to get a life. Visit Modern Times Brewery or existing tasting rooms and see for yourself.
ReplyDeleteI agree. A lot of people equate brewery tasting rooms to bars. They are very different. I wish more people would visit the tasting rooms in Vista, Mira Mesa, or North Park, and see the difference for themselves. These places are pretty much dead by 9 PM. The problems on 101 are caused by places like Union and their ilk, places with with full bars that stay open late.
DeleteIt's also across the street from a large Coaster parking lot. Are the parking concerns really valid?
ReplyDeleteThat lot is already full the majority of the time.
DeleteTo the Encinitas Temperance League, it's all a big slippery slope.
ReplyDeleteMake it an orange juice tasting room and encourage customers to come by Coaster and public bus. Expand the selection to other fruit juices to accommodate all tastes. Graduate to smoothies.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome to use your money and time to open your own business as described.
Delete2:56, you missed the joke. Modern Times sales pitch is complete BS.
DeleteGreg Drakos approving another serving license?
ReplyDeleteWhat a novel idea coming from him. Not! There isn't an alcohol serving license that he has not been in favor of and is their most reliable planning commissioner to count on, no matter the impact of the density of serving establishments.
Too bad Kevin folded.
Enough already.
What happened to the city's study on too many licenses in such a small area?
Modern Times did get off on the right foot by agreeing to close by 10pm. The thing is, once granted, this closing time can, and more than likely will, be renegotiated to later night hours in a year or two.
Will they promise to not seek this extension as long as they are in business in Encinitas? If that were the case, perhaps they can be a good thing. If they resist this at all, it will clearly show their intentions.
If they prove themselves to be a good and responsible neighbor, then they have earned the right to be trusted with a later closing time.
DeleteThey don't want a later closing time. The beer tasting crowd is done by 9pm.
DeleteGo back to New York City where you came from you femtard! "Too many licenses in such a small area"...maybe in Bolshevik Russia where your grandparents came from but not here honey!
DeleteThere are WATY TOO MANY yoga gyms in way too small of an area. Way too much sweat, way too many camel toes, I don't want my kids being subjected to hot and sweaty Cougars wearing no underwear under their Lu Lu Libtard pants with massive camel toe-age. I say that we start a moratorium on yoga gyms.
Stupid comments not helped by the "tard" suffixes. Put the brewski down long enough to make an intelligible point - if you have one.
DeleteThe Planning Dept and the Sheriff both said it was too much. I guess the Planning Commission thought they were wrong. Go figure. As far the neighboring businesses, such as Hwy 101 Traders, the 7-11 and First Street said they were not consulted, as the Commission said they were. I asked all 3 and they confirmed this. Was there a CPP even done?
ReplyDeleteSmoke and mirrors at City Hall. SOP alive and well despite recent housecleaning.
DeleteWill there be an appeal so the issue goes to the City Council?
ReplyDeleteGreg Drakos needs to go somewhere, anywhere else, as long as it is off of the Planning Commission. He serves the serving establishments, not our community or its welfare. Kevin, you could have done a beneficial service for your community and folded. Lets hope you will learn from this and do a better job for the community you claim to represent in the future. Thank you Bruce and Glen for your hearts and votes being in the right place.
ReplyDeleteGreg, not so much. Kevin, wtf. Al, your commercial real estate priorities are showing and not in a good light. Live and learn.
Al approves everything development related. There's not even a pretense of thought behind his votes. There's nothing for him to learn; he has his marching orders and he's happy to follow them.
