The 65 mile segment of coastal rail between San Diego and San Clemente has 12 has big problems. Add them all together and it becomes clear that a "Save the Coaster/Metrolink Train At Any Cost" mentality is misguided and will lead to significant financial, environmental and community consequences that will last for decades.
It is time to turn this tremendous train problem into a singular opportunity - a beautiful, practical and popular rail-to-trail that can serve "active" commuters (bikers/walkers) , nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts (especially surfers!) alike - THE SURF LINE TRAIL.
Erosion of sandstone bluffs and beaches occurs at an average rate of 6 inches per year with occasional slides of 20 feet or more. Tragically, 3 people were killed in a 2019 bluff slide in Encinitas.
The erosion is accelerating due to water runoff and the weight/vibration of the trains themselves.
Cliff erosion shifted the tracks in San Clemente in 2022 suspending rail service to Oceanside and San Diego for almost a year.
Short term implications of erosion: Controversial "armoring" of the most eroded sections of beach and bluff in order to protect the rail lines. This occurred both in Del Mar and San Clemente in 2022/2023.
Long term implications of erosion: Remove the tracks from the bluffs and beaches.
