Grassroots homemade poster contest

There are a lot of creative folks in Encinitas.  Let's see if they'll put that creative energy into action for the election.

There will be a lot of big money mailers and campaign signs that usually determine who wins elections in Encinitas. But maybe a few grassroots flyers, collected here for sharing among neighbors, can counter the money tide.

You can use photoshop, or MS Word, or meme generator, or whatever you like to create a flyer that expresses your thoughts about the city council election. E-mail them to encinitasundercover -at- gmail -dot- com (anonymity is assured if you wish), and I'll post them here.

Here's a sample to get your creative juices flowing.

Winner gets a new city council.

  1. We just asked the candidates to play fair and you do this bullshit! No wonder it goes negative. We start it and wonder why they respond. Also, we should all stop these negative posts or blogs, this would be a good start. If not, I don't blame them for attacking our candidates. Jerome is going to say the same thing our candidates do, it wasn't us, it was my crazy supporters.

    1. Expressing an opinion via a humorous graphic is "bullshit" and not "fair?" Sorry, I don't follow your logic.

Our democracy has a long and rich history of political cartoons. Encinitas has its own barbed cartoonist in Mary Fleener of the Coast News. I would hate to see her silenced in the interest of "fairness."

    2. If a candidate or political Messiah, such as Teresa, does something bad for Encinitas the public must not be told! It would be negative.

  2. At last nights taste of Encinitas, Barth walked around with s sense of " I created this", much like her claims to sponsor Christmas. Kranz was being ignored as he tried to engage voters in conversation and Muir is so grossly obese it's no wonder he was made fire chief, he can't climb a ladder. My friends and I had to walk off the sidewalk and into the street, Muir takes up ALL of the sidewalk. I didn't see Schaffer, I'm sure she was at UCSD putting in overtime to pump up her state pension before she retires.
With a slate of candidates such as these there is no wondering... Encinitas is doomed to financial ruin. With or without Stocks riding the debt bomb, a la Dr. Strangelove.

  3. Mr. Anonymous, why did't you run for office to save our city! You are a coward! By the way, why don't you give us your name? Are you scared to share this information?

  4. I think the poster is funny and I love Mary's cartoons. I also appreciate all the research she does for them. I like the Cardiff Kook calendar too. My favorite month is November. If you haven't seen it yet, Caldwell's Antiques might still have a few.

    1. Mary's cartoons are vicious negative attacks on Jerome and Muir. Jerome has served our city well. Mark is a good man and humble hero. They should be treated with much more respect.

    2. Anon11:37- Attack the messenger, ignore the message. Typical Encinitas rhetoric.....

  5. Encinitas has had the same council majority for over a decade. Faces have changed, but the very same political profile has ruled the day.
It is time for a change.

  6. My cartoons illustrate REAL comments that have been documented by newspaper articles, and more importantly, REAL quotes taken word for word from videos of city council meetings. If the politicans don't want their comments criticized, then they should keep their big mouths shut. I have a 1st Amendment Right, guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, to express my opinion. I'm pleased that 11:36 finds my work "vicious and negative". Good. That means I'm doing my job. If you, 11:36, think Jerome Stocks and Mark Muir are so saintly and deserve praise and accolades for their "service", then by all means, I offer you page 4 of The Coast News to draw your own cartoon telling us what great guys they are. I dare you. -Mary Fleener

    1. I bought a subscription to the Coast News because of Mary's work. I send it around my community and explain how it is a visual representation of what our city has become and will be in the future. My favorite was the high-density housing with people reaching over and passing toilet paper and cups of sugar to neighbors.

Is this really what WE want for Encinitas?

Sustainability through the eyes of Gus Vina and City employees means susatained pensions. I see them as a bunch of parasites who will eventually kill the host unless we do something to stop it.

They fund their own jobs and future retirements by selling off our resources and our neighborhoods one by one. I would suggest that we get rid of them!

  7. As I said before, Mary's work is well researched and accurate. It's hard to chose a favorite but I think my favorite so far was the Kristan Gaspar puppet on a string controlled by the clown. i had to look at it twice to get all of the nuances. Kathleen 2

  8. I'm curious, what are the typical dimensions of political signs? I am particularly interested in the yard sign, as I might want to do one for myself.

    1. ... and Encinitas has an ordinance that they can only be up one month before the election, which is complete bullshit and a blatant violation of the First Amendment, but most people honor it anyway.

  9. That ordinance is crazy. I e-mailed Council about it, and Muir even asked about it, at the August 22 Council Meeting, when the bogus subcommittee was appointed to delay lifting the banner ban . . . because Stocks wanted to! Anyway, the City Attorney, said, "that's for another discussion." Why??? If sign code is being revised, then take out that outrageous section which tries to limit the time we can display signs in our own yards! That is totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
