Prison escapee caught at Santa Fe Vons

CBS 8:
A 33-year-old inmate from San Diego who escaped from a San Bernardino County prison Sunday night was recaptured Monday in Encinitas.

Sheriff's deputies recaptured Michael Martin Garrett, 33, at the Vons on Santa Fe Avenue. He was taken back into custody.

Garrett was unaccounted for Sunday night when guards conducted an evening inmate count at the California Institution for Men in Chino, said Krissi Khokhobashvili of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Doesn’t sound like much of a prison.

  1. Dear fellow citizen,
You may have seen various media reports about two recently appointed (not elected) Encinitas Traffic and Public Safety Commissioners, Darius Degher, a Leucadia musician and poet, and Christina Simokat, a New Encinitas resident and environmental studies professor at Cal State San Marcos, who have refused to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. In brief, Mr. Degher said he's protesting President Trump and his policies and the "anti-immigrant origins" of the Pledge. Ms. Simokat said she is not legally compelled to explain her actions... I've included an article on the January 8 commission meeting from the Del Mar Times / Encinitas Advocate below:

    http://www.delmartimes.net/encinitas-advocate/news/sd-cm-enc-0112-pledge-20180109-htmlstory.html

The Pledge of Allegiance isn't a personal oath to the President or a national party. It's an oath to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands. There's nothing in the mission statement of the Traffic and Public Safety Commission that allows or implies that a member can exploit that body's proceedings to promote a personal political agenda. Commissioners are appointed by the city council. They are unpaid volunteers. So far I've seen no blow back from city council on the unwarranted behavior of these appointees. The Encinitas City Council meets tomorrow evening, Wednesday, January 17, at 6:00 PM. Oral comments on non-agenda items are heard immediately after the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call. The council agenda is available online at: http://www.ci.encinitas.ca.us/Government/Agendas-Webcasts If you wish to attend and address this matter, white speaker slips are taken by the city clerk starting 30 minutes in advance and up until the start of the meeting. My apologies in advance for the brief notice.

  2. Nada problemo with the pledge, but the "under God" addition is unconstitutional.

No problem either with singing the National Anthem, but it would be nice if it was about good values rather than war.

  3. 1:34,

    Serious questions for you:

How is this decision your business?

What kind of government are you promoting that would compel mandatory superficial patriotic display? (Sounds like fascism)

What do you think the penalty should be for failure to execute the compulsory display properly?

Given that SCOTUS has already ruled on this as a First Amendment matter, why don’t you support the US Constitution?

  4. 2:45 You are extremely fortunate to be an American. The very least you could do is acknowledge that by voluntarily saying the Pledge and singing the Anthem.

    1. 3:03, worry about yourself and be glad you live in a country that allows you your freedom of opinion. Don't you get the point here?

    2. 3:03,

In fact, I do stand and recite the pledge and sing the anthem (minus “under god,” because it would be disrespectful to true believers for me to do so).

Unlike you, I revere the flag, the republic for which it stands, and our constitution both superficially and substantively.

You can perform the superficial rituals, but if you don’t acknowledge and support the free exercise of individual rights enshrined in them, then you don’t substantively support them.

Why don’t you join those of us who support our country both superficially and substantively?

    4. 4:00 here, just don't need or want someone with an obvious agenda and blameful attitude questioning my or anyone else's right not to "honor" the flag and or God.

Be glad you reside in a country where you get to live and let live. Get it now?

Free country. Worry about yourself and buzz off, not necessarily in that order.

See the words "least" and "voluntarily" at 3:03 above, and dismount the high horse you have no business riding.

    6. 7:17,

I’m not 4:00, but I support your right to express yourself.

I also support 4:00 and Darius in the same way, because I respect America, and our Constitution.

      You?

    7. The First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees every American the right to express him/herself, including the right to misinterpret anybody else's expression.

    8. I'm 4:00 and I agree with 8:34. He/she expressed the concept very well, better than I did.

I just get itchy when folks start trying to force behavior on a country that values its freedom of speech and expression above all else.

8:47's "misinterpret" comment shows he/she doesn't respect this value. He/she is cool - until you disagree.

  5. 3:03,

In fact, I do. Minus “under god.”

I support our Republic, and the Constitution which defines it. And I support others who use their Constitutional right to First Amendment freedom of expression to express themselves differently from me.

You may stand up an recite the pledge as a superficial act, but you don’t really substantively support the flag, the republic for which it stands, and the constitution unless you also acknowledge and support the individual rights bestowed by them.

Why don’t you join those of us who support America both superficially and substantively?

  8. Sorry to be late here - trying to catch-up.
So, did the escapee not have a Ralph's card? Why was he at Von's? And is it true that he was wearing a "don't tread on me t-shirt" and reciting The Lord's Prayer while goosestepping? So confusing - is he a patriot or not?

    1. Great, another red state to suck Federal tax dollars out the remaining blue states.

      Delete
    2. 3:10 nailed it.

Republicans want to stop freeloaders? Then insist that federal spending flow to the states in equal proportion to each state’s federal tax burden.

California receives $0.78 of federal spending in our state for every dollar we send to DC. New Mexico, Mississippi, Alaska, Louisiana, West Virginia, North Dakota, Alabama, South Dakota, Kentucky and Virginia all receive more than $1.50 in Federal spending for every dollar they send to DC.

In short, part of the reason CA is a high tax state relative to red states is that we are subsidizing them.

  13. 6:50am. I support a new America and a new California by getting out the vote for more than 50% of the electorate that bothered to vote last year.

I support replacing every repugnican with a democrat possible in order to establish a majority in both houses, and castrate [literally, not figuratively] the daily disgracer in chief.

At this point in time, the repugnicans have shown their stripes and their lack of any spine to do what serves our nation and not their party.
