Motorcycle fatality at Moonlight Plaza

CBS 8:
According to authorities, the motorcyclist was popping a wheelie around 11:45 a.m. in the 400 block of South Coast Highway 101 when he lost control and slammed into the back of a patrol unit driven by a deputy.
Wheelie or no, it sure looks like a southbound deputy made a left turn in front of a northbound motorcyclist.

UPDATE: Victim is Carter Yarborough, 48.

  1. The damage appeared to to the side of the police SUV, hopefully not a takedown.

    RIP

    1. When do the police release the official version of the accident's cause?

    2. Good question. Talking to someone else who witnessed the accident - it wasn’t even carter who was doing the wheelie.

  2. Illegal muffler.

  3. Sounds like a hugely failed effort by the sheriff to intervene and ticket/warn a misbehaving / wheely popping young man.

    1. Yea, there would be no other reason to pull a U-turn at that location. Sounds like the cop's timing was off....

    2. Are you actually blaming the cop, and not the moron doing a high-speed wheelie out of control on a crowded 30MPH street?

    3. Since this happened in Encinitas, it somehow has to be someone else's fault, other than the reckless motorcycle driver. If not the deputy, then probably the City Manager or a Department Head (doesn't matter which, just choose one). That's the Encinitas way.

    4. 4:14 - the sheriff pulled directly into the motorists path. If intentional, one could argue manslaughter.

    5. 5:59 is right, but only insofar as people could also argue that the world is flat, and that the Illuminati is a secret group that runs the world.

    6. 4:14pm- Thats ridiculous. If the motorcyclist and the Deputy were involved the blame lies somewhere between them. What I have read on this blog about others action or lack of action is often reflected accurately. Let accountability lie where it belongs for those responsible.

    7. When dealing with machines recklessly, accidents happen. I very much doubt it was intentional on the part of the sheriff - no one is that callous. It was a combination of mistakes that culminated in tragedy.

    8. Or perhaps it was another guy completely independent of carter doing a wheelie. I have never known carter to be wreckless. And a witness said the cop was doing a u- turn to go after the speeding motorcyclist doing the wheelie. One old man says what he saw on the news - he probably didn’t see the whole thing go down - and Whoop di so - must have happened that way. The cop probably didn’t look right when he turned into the lane....

    9. 414 - this motorcycle driver was actually extremely cautious - all the time. He was very aware of his surroundings. He coached cross country and because of that knows the danger of idiots on the road. Could it be the initial news report from the old man was wrong - someone else was doing the wheelie and the cop did a u-turn to bust the dangerous motorcyclist. Perhaps carter was riding with another cop and this will all come out in the end.

    10. One of his riding buddies doesn’t seem shocked at the idea that he would wheelie:

  4. Weekend traffic is hectic. Maybe the cops need to try some 'calming' approaches on 101.

  5. Eliminate one lane in each direction and add a roundabout. That will make it safer to pop wheelies.

  6. Would not be surprised in the least if it was intentional. I thought lawless behavior was encouraged here. Anyone have the name of the deputy?

  8. Tough for the family, but this probably saved an innocent life. Sooner or later this Darwin Award recipient was going to kill somebody.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Hope he was an organ donor.

  9. A cop almost slammed into my car by pulling a u-turn about a month ago. 2 blocks north of there. The officer didn't use a turn signal or warning lights. Also around midnight. Fortunately I was in a car, in the right lane, driving slow, and hit the breaks to avoid a crash.

  10. So true, but family members can sew for damages and request the DA charge manslaughter charges if in fact the deputy deliberately turned in front of the wheeling fool.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Right, they can sew for damages. A stitch in time saves nine.

  12. They might sew the City. Drag racing is a known problem every Sunday in Encinitas for at least 10 years. Yet the City has zero enforcement to address the known problem.

Attractive nuisance. Then when a cop is finally in the mayhem, he freaks the wildness and mistakes happen.

We all see the mayhem every Sunday. Nothing new for us.

  13. Sewing the city would take a huge needle and a lot of thread.

  14. Suing the cops because some Darwin Award moto rider bit the dust due to his own idiocy, may not go far in the courts, as well it shouldn't.

If he had the ability to pull a wheelie, he should have had the ability to stop in time or get out the way.

I bet there was a hottie on the sidewalk that he was showing off for. There is no one to blame but himself.

  16. Let's hear the police dispatch.
10 minutes of that could clear the officer of the idea that this was a botched intercept plan.
