Blakespear pleads for public support for bike lane removal

Mayor Blakespear’s newsletter:

Let me start this newsletter with a big thank you to everyone who has written an email in support of the barrier-protected bikeway along Highway 101 through Cardiff. The City Council will consider the proposal this Wednesday. Please keep your supportive emails coming to our Encinitas elected officials at council@encinitasca.gov! And importantly, please come out Wednesday to speak to the City Council at City Hall, located at 505 S Vulcan Avenue. The meeting starts at 6 p.m., but I would predict that this item won’t be heard until after 7 p.m.
Blakespear’s proposal would eliminate the existing bike lane and force cyclists to choose between a 45 mph car lane and a pedestrian walkway full of families with beach gear.

  3. Why does she keep picking on Cardiff? What ever happened to the Leucadia Streetscape that she was so supportive of after Roberta Walker's accident? Also, her family owns the parking lot at Las Olas. Does she have anything to gain by keeping this pressure up? Even cyclists don't like this plan.

  5. 12:17 it will make it worse. They (herds of pelotons) will not choose the new bike lane. They will stay in traffic lanes and continue to make it impossible for us to get down the coast in our cars.

    2. How about both the pelotons and the old farts that walk in the road go the way of the dodo? Basically, if you can't follow the single rule of life that matters -- don't slow others down -- you should gtfo. No need for selfish entitled assholes who believe they're in their own Truman Show.

  9. This is a great idea. That section of road is super dangerous for the casual biker or child. Cars pull out of those parking spots with little or no notice as they have to accelerate rapidly. It's a recipe for disaster. This doesn't apply to the Peleton. They wont use it and they will use the right full lane regardless. This debate should not be about the peleton. This debate should be about a 13 year old kid riding his or her bike to the beach. That section is not safe for them and this would make it safe for them.

    2. A lot of us are angry because there's enough problems driving around here. Cars run red lights, sometimes 3-4 cars at any given intersection and if you make the mistake of driving the speed limit you get tail gated and flipped off. The recreational bikers don't follow the rules of the road, are combative and yell at people all the time. Those who wish to "Save the Planet" by biking, hog the road and fail to stop at stop signs. Then you have the bikes with engines, the scooters, and joggers who run in the road and there's too many people. All our city is doing is adding to the congestion when they should look for ways to decrease it. Education and enforcement of the rules of the road would help a lot, but all I ever see are police questioning homeless people. It's the Wild West here!

  11. Riding a bike in car and truck traffic is never safe anywhere.

    Whenever there's a collision — and those will increase as more people ride bikes — the bicyclist always loses.

  12. Question: The Mayor's family owns the land where parking is at Las Olas. They rent it to whoever owns that restaurant. My question is shouldn't she have to recuse herself from all of the projects going on close to that land in Cardiff? Seems as if the land will go up in value with the stuff going on at the Lagoon, which she unilaterally said Yes to, and this new project might also increase the value of that land. Anyone have an answer to this?

    1. About 1/4 of that parcel (the western part) is owned by the state. The other 3/4 is owned by the Smith Kopp Survivors Trust, Rubenstein, Cardiff. Yes, that's Blakespear's family.

      It sure does look as if Blakespear has a proprietary interest — a conflict of private vs. public interest — in pushing the various projects she has piled on Cardiff.

    2. I’m not so sure, but it’s worth asking.

      First, she’d have to have a direct ownership interest. I’m not sure it counts if she’s a trustee, if she even is. Also, it’s not obvious to me that changing from a bike lane to a different kind of bike lane would change property value.

  14. you can bet she's calling in favors from all over the county to get folks to testify on her behalf. she won't have speakers state where they live. can hear her now "it doesn't matter let's just get on with it."

  15. I think our City Council and City Hall staff screwed us.

    Eliminating the class II will result in many cyclists choosing to take the outside vehicular travel lane, which they have the right to do per law. because the class IV pathways will be packed with beachgoers and pedestrians.

    Bicyciists sharing a lane with 50+ mph is not good design.

    All the commenters want a better designed road that will improve the conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists. Many of those in-favor of the project explained that they just wanted a "safe" way to get to the beach and SB in that area.

    Those opposed to the proposed projects also want needed improvements for a safe pathway to the beach and SB, however, they presented serious concerns and flaws in the proposed design that will likely result in people getting hurt or killed.

    The majority of comments received by the city spoke to this point, but the Mayor and her pawns already made up their minds and majority of knowledgable comments

    The City will be liable for the change, the elimination of the class II bikelanes and the resulting injuries. I foresee more lawsuits like Roberta and the others about to drop.

  16. When the city clerk counted the paper ballots at the end of the item it was 6 for the city's plan, 30 against. Blakespear had the nerve to state the opinions were "evenly split." She almost always has her mind already made up and with that ridiculous statement she really showed her hand. Not even embarrassed about it, either.
