[T]ensions flared when former mayor Tony Kranz, seated alongside local attorney Marco Gonzalez and Marlon Taylor, school board president for the Encinitas Union School District, set up a camera on a tripod and started recording the event.
According to several attendees, Shaffer asked Kranz to stop filming, saying he wanted to create a welcoming environment where people could speak freely without the pressure of being recorded.
“I have every right in the world to record the video,” Kranz told The Coast News. “It’s pretty common for elected officials to be recorded when speaking.”
The disagreement escalated, prompting two attendees to contact law enforcement. One resident, who asked not to be named, told The Coast News the exchange made the atmosphere tense and disappointing, especially for residents who wanted to speak with their elected official without being recorded or filmed.

This was a set-up by Luke to expose his right wing theories, such as taking a gun to a development. I am no Kranz fan, but I find this ridiculous. Trust Rachael (does she live in Encinitas) and Julie, who lives here but not in his district, to make more of this than it was. 2 Sheriffs were called. While Blake Spear was absolutely devastating for Encinitas, and the region as the chair of Sandag, the town dunce results show how completely in-adequate he is at everything.
Prior to her election to the State Senate, Blakespear served two years on the Encinitas City Council starting in 2014, followed by six years as mayor from December 2016 to November 2022. While mayor, she also served as chair of SANDAG.
While Catherine Blakespear was on Cuty Council for eight years, she got her street a quiet zone, beautiful rail trail and was able to get all of the density growth locations in Leucadia and outside of her neighborhood.
Kranz record, not so good. He absolutely sunk Leucadia and into abyss.
1. Zero progress on quiet zone.
2. Negative progress on access to the Beach.
3. Invited most of the fentanyl zombies to Downtown Encinitas and Leucadia to shit and jerk off around everybody, And promoted expanding the homelessness building industry by giving even more money to CRC.
4. Took more money away from projects to maintain infrastructure and gave it to the city manager to grow the gigantic useless and incompetent, Blakespear, staff.
5. Secured massive high density dwelling units stealing neighbor’s sunshine, views, peace and parking.
6. Shut down access to local grocery markets and other fine businesses which made older people trying to walk have to stores, now drive, and their health deteriorated further.
7. Failed to deliver any Beach access improvements in 12 years and actually voted numerous times to close beach access and fenced off for no good reason.
The list is endless and I’ve got to go to work to earn money to pay my property tax. Unlike Tony Kranz..
You see in his email TONY brought his caretaker to Cardiff because without her, Tony could not exist and would be homeless by his own admissions. Other than Mayor, his greatest achievement was Carnie at the fair. Kranz isn’t even able to cook a bratwurst with his free beer without his caretaker.

There wasn’t even any real controversy, and yet, Luke is obviously already shutting down the meeting. There’s no chanting. No yelling. No protest songs. No self immolation. Luke and Rachel, et al need to grow a pair and start acting like leaders.
They were wandering in the political wilderness for so long that they built a whole identity around being powerless victims. It’s clear they had a hope for the meeting that they would engage a contingent of apathetic, silent, disengaged voters. Obviously they wanted to engage this target audience in a conversation and not have it recorded. And when they didn’t get exactly what they wanted, they gave up and quit as victims.
Spoiler alert. You aren’t victims. You and your allies control 80% of the council dais. You are in charge. It’s time to start acting like it.
So some people showed up who didn’t fit the profile of what you wanted. So what? Tough shit. Move forward.
So someone started recording. So what? Tough shit. Move forward.
Real leadership is messy, and it’s not about total control and getting every detail of everything you want. You deal with inconvenient details and focus on the big picture. The big picture is, Luke has power.
Even in that room he had power. He had the power to say “Tony, my preference is that this not be recorded so that these constituents can speak freely without being afraid of having their remarks broadcast, but I can’t control what you do—we’re moving forward.”
Luke also had the power to pick a person in the back of the room and say “Sir, I don’t think I’ve seen you at a council meeting before, and you’re the type of person I was hoping to hear from. Can you take the mic and tell us a bit about you and what issues you care most about?” He had the power to shape and direct the direction of that conversation to get some value from it.
But instead he chose to continue as a powerless victim and quit.
