Our Lady of the Ocean news

If you haven't had a chance to check out the beautiful new viewing area for the Surfing Madonna at Moonlight Plaza across the street from her original location, please do.

And you can now show your support for Mary's message.

From the Inbox:
The Surfing Madonna “Save the Ocean” Paver Project has begun!!! Become a part of the history & legend of the Surfing Madonna!

Customize your own brick (paver) with a message, name, date, or favorite quote of your choice that can be shared with your friends, family and community for years to come!

The paver will be installed below the Surfing Madonna mosaic, which has recently been transformed into the zen-like Surfing Madonna Park, complete with a flowing fountain, native plants and flowers, night time lighting and a 24 hour camera, which is live on the internet!

Funds raised will provide local high school students the opportunity to get involved with our Surfing Madonna Ocean Conservation Programs and be a part of the positive change in our community. A portion of the proceeds will also provide the on-going support for our free educational community programs and events, which are open to the public!

We have very limited space, so the bricks will go fast! It’s the PERFECT GIFT for someone special that will last a lifetime!

Price starting at $150 and includes the following: • An 8x4 Customized Engraved paver with 3 lines of any name, message, quote and/or date of your choice placed directly in front of the Surfing Madonna at her permanent home off Encinitas Blvd and the Pacific Coast Highway • Installation and Maintenance • Monthly updates and photos of the community charity projects YOU helped make possible with purchasing the brick

TO ORDER YOUR PAVER, PLEASE VISIT http://www.surfingmadonna.org/fundraisers/donations

  1. What, nobody to trash so no comments here? If this is an example of how the people of this blog, who were predominantly in support of finding the SM a home, fail to follow up with financial support (at least exhorting people to sign up) then PV is in trouble.

    1. 10:04 - How do you know what people are/aren't doing to contribute? No comments, so you thought you'd make a negative remark attacking...the lack of negativity? That is one black cloud hanging over you, dude.

    2. ahhh 10:04 it sounds like you are the one "trashing" others - just saying-

    3. Any thing done at PV starts with a complete demolition.

    4. Not true, 12:19. Astute observation, 6:35. 10:04 is trying to guilt trip people because no comments were posted.

I can give written kudos to Mark Patterson. I supported him, from the beginning, his vision, his artistry, and his cause.

Someone is so obsessed with trashing Pacific View, that he has become blinded by his own selfish desires, his own ego.

  2. Not true…. I never said I would support the move.

Hey here a solution, let the City set up an endowment to save the SM forever in perpetuity. It would only cost $5,000,000 for future maintenance. Come on City Council, the City has tons of resources and doesn't have any other priorities right? Come on, its art and for the kids.

Quick the bricks are about to be sold, better buy them all for $5 million.

    Sigh….

    1. To whom it may concern about where the proceeds we raise goes. My name is Bob Nichols and I don't care about my reputation so I will not remain anonymous. The Surfing Madonna Oceans Project is comprised of 3 full time members Mark Patterson, myself and another person whom I won't mention as I don't want you to trash them.

When Mark and I put the Madonna up on Good Friday we didn't know that we were going to be outed, the Madonna was a gift to the community. It turned out we had to pay well over $6,000 in fines and that was just the beginning. After Mark and I paid the fine out of our own pocket we decided to form an organization where we could continue to give back to the community and honestly try to make a difference.

Last year we did just that when we formed the Surfing Madonna 5K/10K Beach Run/Walk at Moonlight Beach. We raised $50,000 for the community and gave it all back. $20,000 went towards Ocean/Beach and Park related projects voted on by race/walk participants. $20,000 went towards San Dieguito High School scholarships that will be presented in May to kids who are trying to make a difference in our environment with creative ideas such a ocean buoy energy. $3,000 went towards our local YMCA special needs programs and $7,000 is being invested into fully funding a surf school for special needs children this summer starting in July.

This year our goal is to raise $100,000 for these types of programs. Unfortunately we do come across naysayers and no believers such as yourself from time to time, but this only makes us work harder to prove that people really can make a difference. Last year Mark, myself and our other board member didn't make a dime, we worked the whole year out of pocket and consistently put in 40-60 hr work weeks, and are continuing to do so.

If you would like to help give back to the community or have some creative ideas on how we can make a positive difference in our community without trashing people and starting a bunch of drama, then I welcome you comments and even better I welcome you to help by volunteering.

One more thing....We moved the Madonna because no one knew that she had come back to Encinitas. Keith Harrison knew the Cafe Ipe and Surfy Surf move was going to be temporary and congratulated us on finding a home that everyone could agree on and enjoy. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions bob@surfingmadonna.org

    2. We are so blessed to have such a fine piece of art in our community. Kudos to the artist Mark Patterson and thank you Bob Nichols for organizing such an amazing foundation for the community. I purchased a brick last week, but after reading your reply I might just have to have another one. Does anyone know when the paver party will be, I heard it's supposed to be in the next couple of months. Hmmm maybe its best if I just contact the Surfing Madonna group.

    1. You are so bitter about the money you imagine won't go to roundabouts, right? LOL!

Also, you are bitter that the Surfing Madonna was moved from over by JP's, where an umbrella routinely obstructed our vision of her from the Highway, to where it is now, which is far more visible to many more members of the general public.

I saw the weird, twisted photos of the Surfing Madonna on the Leucadia Blog. More twisting of the facts through manipulation of camera angles, attempted manipulation of public opinion. Pathetic!

    2. Thank you for your support Lynn. This year we are doing some exciting things including our 2nd Annual Surfing Madonna 5K/10K Run and our brick paver project. We would love to hear some of your ideas, or if you would like to be a part of the team or help volunteer we would love to have you. You can contact me at bob@surfingmadonna.org. Have a wonderful evening : )
