Barber angry over mural depicting immigrants arriving by boat

10 News:
A business owner in Encinitas is up in arms over a mural painted on a neighboring 7-11 convenience store.

The mural depicts a group of people -- who appear to be immigrants -- arriving on shore in a boat, one of them with a backpack in hand.

The business owner believes the image is offensive and should be taken down.

10News Reporter Vanessa Van Hyfte is talking to folks in Encinitas and will have reaction at 5 p.m.

  1. The artist thought he was depicting the diversity of the community, but illegal entry is controversial, to say the least. Probably too hot to handle at this particular time - I'm surprised the 7-11 owner allowed it, as you don't want to "alienate" any customers.

The image speaks for itself. That's why presidents are not spontaneous. They have media-savvy advance teams that consider both the symbolism and the substance of any appearance before the president or press arrive on scene.

Huge fail. That picture will be in history books. Perhaps unfairly, but it is what it is.

  8. It appears that Encinitas has finally gone over to the monied people who have nothing better to do than to trash a beautiful mural. I know we cannot go back in time, but there was a time that this mural would have been considered beautiful. Now we live in a city that has too many people with too much time on their monied hands. I live in a "side by side" and we just put up a new fence and paid for it ourselves because the owner of the other half of the "side by side" didn't want to pay, even though he has more money that my husband and I combined. The person that did the fence left a few pieces of wood in the alley, on our property, and he just called saying it needs to be removed immediately. I asked what the problem was, and he said that he gets $4000.00 monthly for his rental and the renters don't like the wood in the back of our yard. I said we will remove it this weekend, and he said it needs to be done more quickly than that. It is not a fire threat, nor is it in the alley but actually on our property. We have always tried to get along with the people who own the other half, but a new person bought it and is not as cordial about much of anything. When I asked if he would like to pay for the fence, as it benefitted him as well, he said NO! So much for people getting along here in the New Monied Encinitas.

There are no grounds to remove this art. It is a wonderful gift to the community and expertly crafted by a very talented artist. It expertly depicts an event. Is captures a moment in the eye of the artist that he shares with those that get to view the message. The artist is not judging. He is communication.
Art, like music, is a pure form of communication. It transcends race, religion, color, age or time.
I would encourage all to view the art and if it makes you think, care, laugh or cry, then it has worth.

Yes our ancestors immigrated here, most of them legally. Would you like to see a public display of your ancestors crossing illegally into the country? It may not be racist but it is definitely political. The "joke" is it's insensitive to hispanics and meant to intimidate whites (not the wealthy ones, just the middle class ones). Another dopey elite Obama-bot joke.

    4. "Would you like to see a public display of your ancestors crossing illegally into the country?"

You mean whites invading the new land? Think I've seen plenty of illustrations of that in text books. Hey, its history. Maybe the local paper should stop reporting boat loads of people illegally disembarking here in Encinitas then too. It's happened a lot over the last 10 years here and they abandon the boat. And the helicopters dog them all night long for people trying to sleep on the coast. That's life, and like it or not, the mural is a pretty good depiction of 3 aspects of our city. Not to mention beautifully done.

    2. Hey, if Congress won't do its job, the President has to step in and "get 'er done". He's totally within his authority here, and the Texas case will not make it through appeals - Judge Hanen ruled only on the procedural point that Obama's new policy was implemented in violation of the Administrative Procedure Act. This act requires that the government get public reaction before implementing a new policy or program. It's an arcane and technical argument that has nothing to do with immigration policy. The government countered that this isn't a new policy at all, and they're perfectly within their rights to choose how to exercise enforcement of current policy, and because it's current policy, not new policy, it's not subject to review by the courts and does not have to go through the APA procedures. Slam dunk overturn at appeals.

Isn't unilaterally creating a new work permit program a bit more than prosecutorial discretion?

      Delete
    4. Nope. Immigration policy and enforcement falls to the executive branch. Congress does not enforce immigration laws precisely because it is a body comprised of the states. All it has is the purse strings. Immigration, and national defense, is purely a federal matter.

Regardless, enforcement of this particular area is paid from by fees, and fees are not subject to Congressional action. Bush did go to congress for use of force in Iraq - Hillary and Biden supported it.

The king acted unilaterally in Libya - now our ambassador was assassinated by the muslm Islamists, our embassy over run and Christians slaughtered

The king blamed a video and the state run press backed him up

Can you show us where Bush said "we have expanded my authority" looking forward to the information

      Delete
    11. 6:12 - I already have. if you don't want to do the work, then you don't get the spoils. Yes, a lawsuit has been filed, but nothing has been upheld. That occurs at the appeals level, not the trial level. Sure, you can quibble about semantics, but an understanding of how our justice system works is crucial to being able to debate its results and consequences.
In the same vein, the President is not a King...period. Referring to the office as such only biases your arguments. I have never thought any of our Presidents were Kings.
Sure, Bush went to Congress. Yes, Hillary and Biden supported it. So did most of the country. What's your point? We should ignore that that request was based on faulty (flat out wrong) intelligence?
Libya - that was within the purview of the executive branch. No different than any other President. Johnson and Reagan come to mind.
And if you think the press is state run, then I have to seriously question where you get your information, and what kind of diligence you do to make sure it's accurate.

the very thing you claimed in your 8:16 post the claims fo WMD's were flat out wrong- looks like you are the one who was wrong-, along with John Stewert, Brian "Lying" Williams, Candy Crowley, Brokaw, Rather, Matthews, Maddow, Ifil-

will you now admit that there were WMD's? The NY Times has, what say you? Will you apologize or continue to perpetuate the lie?

      Delete
    18. concisepolitics.com? Americanthinker.com? Really? This is what you cite as credible facts? They, my friend, are in the business of spin. Now, the NYT article states "Many rockets were in poor condition and some were empty or held a nonlethal liquid, the officials said. But others contained the nerve agent sarin, which analysis showed to be purer than the intelligence community had expected given the age of the stock."

So the sarin was there, but not he delivery system.

It goes on to say "These munitions were remnants of an Iraqi special weapons program that was abandoned long before the 2003 invasion, and they turned up sporadically during the American occupation in buried caches, as part of improvised bombs or on black markets."

That doesn't really sound like the same kind of threat that Sec Powell described at the UN, does it?

And the worst part is this - "“If we were aware of these compounds, and as it became clear over the course of the war that our troops had been exposed to them, why wasn’t more done to protect the guys on the ground?” he said. “It speaks to the broader failure.”

So yes, I'll admit there were some form of WMD's over there, but it was no different now then it was back then - everyone knew there was a stockpile of something, that it would be old, useless, and obsolete, and nothing to really go to war over. The quality of the sarin was a surprise, but honestly - with no delivery system? How useful could that be?

So now I have considered your cites and read the same articles as you. Based on "the facts" presented, we have come to 2 very different conclusions. Thank you for sharing your opinion.

you quote from the 2015 article that "Rockets.....contained the nerve agent sarin, which analysis showed to be purer than the intelligence community had expected. ( earlier at 8:18 you had posted the intelligence was wrong? -

now at 11:40 you admit that the WMD's not only were there- they were stronger than expected!

You then attempt to distract from the facts that not only were there WMD's in Iraq and that they were stronger then expected by claiming and expecting us to believe there was no delivery systems-

You would have us ignore the importance that these WMD's were showing up on the black market and as you write as "Improvised bombs"- of course we all know that "improvised bombs" means they have a delivery systems - it is called a dirty bomb

There is no difference of opinion.

Facts are there wwere massive amounts of chemical and gas WMD's in Iraq-

NBC, CBS, PBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, Comedy Central, NY Times, WSJ, Time, US weekly, the Economist for years promoted and continue to promote the lie that there were no WMD's.

Meanwhile, economic engagement with Eastern Europe seemed to result in remarkable political and human rights changes. Even China is making significant changes, as their workers come to understand and demand the rights and privleges that come with a developed economy. Isolation and confrontation has achieved nothing in Cuba--how long should we continue a failed policy?

As for immigration policy, are you seriously saying that Cuban refugees are escaping anything worse than the violence and poverty endemic to places like Honduras? If communism is an automatic ticket to US benefits and citizenship, then why don't we offer the same treatment to Venesualans?

The fact is, Cubans represent a reliable voting block in a swing state that effects national elections. The special treatment for Cubans is a naked attempt to game elections to delay the demographic inevitability of Republican decline.

You ignore the goals of the communist party in 1963 to justify your own contribution to the degradation of the American Family, the education system and the increase in American poverty, children without parents and a violent me first selfish society-

My eyes are open. We have immigration laws on the books. Obama and members of both parties would rather ignore the laws and promote open borders to continue to loss of the american culture

Obama and the democrats had control of both the house, senate and oval office in 2008 and did nothing to solve the border problem or put forth a plan-

not Obama is acting with "We have expanded my authority?

Here in San Diego the communist socialist in Mexic are beginning to dominate locat radio broadcast from Baja- 92.7 hip hop and 1090 AM all broadcast over, and over, and over, and over, over- about the Mexican government is here for the people blah, blah- it is subversive- ahnd it is a prep to woo the sheeple into complacency

Ignore the facts at your own peril, or open your eyes and see them for what they are

ps- bush left office 7 years ago- let it go

    5. (sigh)

9:52, you are a lost cause. The Red Scare is over. It turns out, we won, and communism was neither as prevalent nor as powerful as we thought. It's a flawed ideology that works only on paper. In the real world it falls apart if left alone.

And the reference to Bush was 41, not 43. You would know that if you read and comprehend.

Good luck with your witch hunt.

you did not respond to any of the goals of the communist party of 1963- why"

Communist Goal- Gain control of editorial boards, films, tv, radio, university and churches to shape public opinion and control public thought-

      * Last year Hirsi Ali- a Christian convert for Islam who speaks out for woman's rights and against the hate and atrocites of Islam was scheduled to speak at Weslyan University- until the thought Police gained control and prevented her from speaking- 1 week later teeange christian girls were kidnapped by the Muslim Jihadist Boko Haram and sold into muslim sexual slavery- Reverend WRight and Father Phelger- churches advocating socialism and dependence on the state- the Catholic church- advocating illegal immigration

      2. Weaken the American male as head of the family to weaken the country- TV shows, films, media portray the american male as the bufoon and incompetent- (Modern Family etc) books and speakers backed by the press promote the power of woman and celebration of feminsism- male masculinity is devalued and degraded from elementary schools to the workplace to the household.

      3. Infiltrate both houses of congress- today there is little difference between Democrats and Republicans and little legistalation of benefit from either party to help the country

      4. Weaken america militarily by ceding control to the UN- THe UN led the screw up in Lybia- the result is the US Ambasssador murdered and Muslim Islamic Jihadi's cut the heads of 21 Christians

The Communist state is alive and well- headed by Comrad Vladimir Putin- he is taking over the Ukraine and eastern Europe, and neither the US nor the UN are able to stop him.

You may choose to turn a blind eye to these facts-

common sense people are not joining you

    7. If you think today's Russia is communist, then you understand neither Russia nor communism.

    8. An opponent of Comrad Vladimir Putin was gunned down a day before speaking out against the communist leader-

just like the goold ol' days, meet the new boss same as the old boss

who will stop Putin and the communist russian expansion into Eastern Europe-

      the UN?

    9. I think you are confusing communism with brutality.

United Russia (Putin's Party) has no consistent ideology, other than the consolidation of power. Privatization of petro-chemical companies is an obvious example of a policy 180 out of phase with communism. It benefits the oligarchs, who return the favor with political and economic support for United Russia.

Putin is a brutal and violent leader steeped in Cold War nationalism, but he's no communist idealogue.

  28. Enough already of this so far off the topic rant. What does any of this have to do with the beautiful wall mural under discussion?

This is same person who brought forth Agenda 21 last year and again that had nothing to do with the columns discussion at the time.

WC, would it be possible to have an off topic column where he could rant to his hearts content so the rest of us could focus on the topic at hand?

I found out who this Agenda 21 character was back then and when I can remember and confirm with another trusted citizen, I will out him publicly, if he keeps this crap up.

If there was a space where such disillusioned paranoid souls could rant to their hearts content, that would be preferable than having the rest of us subjected to off topic rants like this Tea Party nut job professes. He is a card carrying Tea Party member as I remember that clearly from the one time I was at a small meeting and he was there using the opportunity to further his wacko perspective.

An off topic column for such misguided souls or some timely editing? What do you think WC? I am eternally grateful for the forum you provide here for the dispensing of news we cannot get elsewhere.

The Coast News used to be our only reliable source and I hope it will again with an editor other than Tony Cagala. I miss Mary Fleeners on target drawings. Bring her back.

  29. To the complaining barber, you are a full block away from this mural. What is your problem? I went by there earlier for a close up look.

Can you see Russia from your barber shop?

What a tempest in a teapot. Your business must be hurting if you don't have a better use of your time than to complain about a mural you and your few customers you have left don't ever have to look at from a full block away.

It takes all kinds and we certainly have them here. I went into the 7-11 and let them know that except for a few miscreants, there is overwhelming support for this installation and he appreciated the support.
