Encinitas schoolkids get porn on iPads

We've long been critical of Encinitas Union School District Superintendent Tim Baird's debt-for-iPads program.

But it gets worse. Much, much worse.

Union-Trib:
The Encinitas Union School District failed to install filters on iPads it sent home with elementary school students, making it more likely children can use the devices to download inappropriate content, a group of parents told the school board Tuesday.

The parents also complained that Superintendent Tim Baird has been aware of the problem for a long time, but has failed to take any action.

[...]

At Tuesday’s board meeting, several parents said students had become exposed to pornography through district iPads. “There was no filter established. I mean zero,” said Neil Warren, a parent at Capri Elementary. “You can not expose children to the harmful effects of pornography.”

Chuck Phillips, a chief technology officer for a major digital marketing firm in San Diego, and parent with two kids at Flora Vista Elementary, told Baird that there should be clearer milestones to get the filters installed on the tablets as soon as possible. “There’s just no accountability to parents,” he said.

  1. Some of the kids will not see boobies, because they will go blind from Measles.

    Problem solved; you're welcome.

  2. This is typical of our elected leaders that they only advocate for getting the public to spend money on pie-in-the-sky projects without upholding their end of the bargain for financial and oversight and safety.

This is why taxpayers have to put their foot down and say 'NO' to these schemes.

Spending tons of money on something does not guarantee success when the quality of people in charge of a project are doing it for the wrong reasons. This failure falls squarely on the District.

  3. Unfortunately, the only thing Tim Baird cares about is the yoga and farm. Hours are spent on something that is not directly related to the new Core Curriculm. Why not fire Mim Michelove - president of Healthy Day Partners . Her contract states she gets 85k a year and our tax dollars pay for every expence incurred. Did you see her in the school district picture in San Francisco, Washington DC, and now Virginia. She was also first in line at the Palm Springs junket. My kid can't get extra help with Math. Where is the accountability?

    1. 85k?! It's gone up (used to be ~40k). Which board minutes show the new amount?

    2. Where is the research to back up that a community garden has positive impacts on student health or student learning? Eating a few fresh carrots and greens a few times a year is not enough to make a measurable impact.

However, there is TONS of research to show that art classes, music classes and PE have profound impact on students' learning. Another thing that impacts student learning is the number of instruction hours students receive. When my children were in this school, they didn't even meet the state minimum since they were watching Disney movies or in assemblies at least twice a month.

My conclusion is that the garden is another pet project/time waster for kids.

    3. Probably has more to do with the tax situation of the spare land on Quail Gardens Dr that was given to the school district when Encinitas Ranch was built..

    4. Perhaps you should start a garden. And yes it helps kids of all ages.

    5. It is more important for parents to be responsible in feeding their children healthy food and to teach them why it is healthy for them. All learning starts at home. The schools can only do so much. It is more important to be in the classroom learning the basics than it is to be growing a garden.

If parents want to teach their children to garden, spend your time teaching them at home and do a garden of your own.

    6. Learning to grow food a child can eat. Learning common core is not so practical. I'll take my kid learning gardening any day.

    7. Things like visiting the gardening patch, watching Disney movies, and trips to LEGOLAND should be family outings and should not be part of the school day! These activities should not count for instruction time. There are a lot of basic skills that they have cut out--like hand writing!

    8. The school district had to do something with the land on Quail Garden Drive which was set aside by Carltas (Ecke) for a school when the Encinitas Ranch was developed. The land was about to be returned to Carltas for non-use. The garden was only built to satisfy the state requirement under the pretext of its educational value.

  4. A responsible parent has their children in PRIVATE school. Public school for the past 50 years has done nothing but dumb down the masses and introduce the virulent forms of societal reforms.

  5. Maybe "super woman" Mo Muir can fix the IPad problem. After all, she has nothing better to do with her time.

  6. I believe that Mo is with the San Dieguito School Board these days.

  7. I'm sure that if the kids are accessing porn they're not doing it on the school's servers. I'm sure those servers have every kind of filter imaginable on them! So then what servers are these kids using to allegedly access all this porn? The library? Nope - they have filters too. Starbucks? Not too many grade schoolers there.Their home network? Isn't it the parents responsibility to make sure their child's internet access is monitored/restricted? I dunno - I'm not really seeing an issue here. If the kid is unsupervised, they're gonna do whatever they want, filtered iPad or not.

    1. The kids are smarter than Baird - this guy is too busy perking himself with free "fact-finding" trips to know what is going on at home. Probably practicing the conga for the next extravaganza tour...

  8. Sculpin - several parents that spoke at the meeting said that their children accessed the porn in the CLASSROOM during school hours using a classroom iPad (not the ones taken home by the students).

  9. Kids see what I consider "porn" all day long, in advertising, magazine ads, violence in films. That being said, where are the books? Then you wouldn't have this problem, would you?

That says everything I need to know about you.

    3. Seriously?

He simply gave the district too much credit by believing they would be minimally competent. An easy mistake to make.

  11. What else would one expect from a steady diet of bottom feeding? Sculpin is what he consumes and it shows consistently in his useless baseless comments. Ever the apologist that he is.

  12. Criticism should be directed to Baird and the Board of Trustees that cannot think independently of EUSD's awful superintendent. Baird's a bad administrator, and by the Board's recently NOT appointing someone who actually ran against the ensconced incumbents to replace Mo Muir, the Trustees are propping up this incompetent, self-serving demagogue.
