The Beginning is Nigh... This Wednesday at 11am, The Confessional, the new Lost Abbey Tasting Room in Cardiff will open its doors. We'll see you soon to hear your confessions... #Cardiff #beerpenance #theconfessionalThat's in the Seaside Market complex.
Insert snarky comment about vibrancy and run amok boozing here. Personally, I can't wait to try it..
ReplyDeleteI brought my family down to the Courtyard at the Market this weekend for Pizza- used to be a nice place to have a slice and soda and let the kids runs around-
DeleteNow there are a bunch of wide-eyed drunks yucking it up checking out the moms walking by-
disgusting. Alteast at Pacific Station it is shopping and drunks- Cardiff used to be for families
So there are "... a bunch of wide-eyed drunks yucking it up checking out the moms walking by-" hanging out in the center and the Lost Abby tasting room hasn't even opened. Maybe the problem is Cardiff.
Delete8:32-
Deletewrong- the Abby was open for an event over the week-end and also for an event last night. I guess you don't live in Cardiff.
Last night there were again "wide-eyed drunks yucking it up checking out the moms"
if you are going to post, kindly check your facts before doing so
Oh pardon me. You're right, I don't live in Cardiff as I'm sure many of us on this blog don't so when you fail to say that the "wide-eyed drunks yucking it up checking out the moms" were there because the Lost Abby had a pre-opening event the assumption is they were unrelated to Lost Abby. "Alteast" you could have done that.
DeleteJust another place to get drunk or high. Encinitas is standing up to its reputation. Welcome everyone. Come on up (or down) and tip a few. We have tons of parking to accommodate the traffic.
ReplyDeleteI get high in council chambers!
DeleteDid anonymous 1 write that as a follow up, or is anonymous 2 just meeting expectations?
ReplyDeleteAs if alcohol hasn't been served there since Vons and Value Fair closed....
ReplyDeleteAnother great family spot ruined. Thanks council for your lack of concern.
ReplyDeleteHow exactly is the Council responsible for this? It is zoned for it, so what could the Council have done?
DeleteI see the Encinitas Temperance Society has arrived to the comments section. Perhaps we need virtue police, like Saudi.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but I think low rent losers who want to get smashed will continue to source their PBR cans from the Office or the Shanty.
Stay out of the crosswalks!
ReplyDeleteAgree with 5:08. The owners of Cardiff Seaside Market are a part of this new beer tasting place. Both brothers have been amazing contributors to our community, giving money to worthy causes. I remain optimistic that this will not be the end of the world for Cardiff. And, I don't even like beer.
ReplyDeleteSo happy to hear that these wonderful brothers contribute so much to our community. Perhaps they could figure out a way to keep our kids and streets safe from the drunks. They don't mind getting rich off those who have nothing better to do with their time than DRINK.
DeleteBoth brothers were dead set against Prop A and for that they lost a few of us loyal shoppers. One was at the Cardiff meet/greet with Murphy last fall and was mighty interested in the joys to be had from upzoning.
Delete8:10, are you representing the Encinitas Temperance League (ETL), Operation Eighteenth Amendment (O18A), or Volstead Now (VN)?
Delete6:40 It is a change in Cardiff-
DeleteI suspect some parents will be foolish enough to let their kids runs about on the grass area in front of the bar and leering drinkers checking out the moms- but I won't be hanging out there-
The place was open last night , mostly men, and very loud in that courtyard-
If it was closed in like Zenbu maybe the noise would not be so bad-
Now I feel like it's PB- the old window open bars facing the courtyard drunkfest
the place is open tonight - no kids or families there like there usually is. place is LOUD like hens cackling. lot's of dudes drniking and checking out the courtyard-
Deletemore beer taps in Encinitas. Just what we need. 2016 election can not happen soon enough. Afterward, Dalakranz will have plenty of time to hang out and tip a few all day everyday.
ReplyDeleteLive long and (hic) prozzzberrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
DeleteThe bars and taps won't go away after Tony leaves office, just FYI.....
DeleteNo shit. But we can elect council members to stop selling our or town to those who will profit off existing residents quality of life.
DeleteA large portion of the regular contributors to this blog are such a sad group of people. You continually bash everyone and everything that comes up. The only reason that I read this blog/comments is to get an extreme point of view from the NIMBY faction. There is no objectivity. There is no constructive discourse. Over 85% of the comments are negative. Your echo chamber is a sad one indeed. Try celebrating the positives of this community and encouraging some healthy objective debate as opposed to condemning anything new.
ReplyDeleteIt's constructive criticism. And objectivity is relative to the observer - sounds like you're biased.
Delete3:02 Why waste your time coming here and reading our comments? You must be interested or feel left out. We don't like the bars, the drinking, the DOA's, and all of the other ill conceived things that drinking does. And, we certainly don't like what these places do to ruin a nice community. Maybe you like living in that kind of environment. The rest of us don't.
DeleteGo visit your favorite bar and get ripped. Better yet, stay home and get snockered so we don't have you meet you on the street.
4:22 Well said and as someone who has lived here for a very long time, much more in line with what residents want. The "local" drinkers are not the majority, most are from other parts of the county.
Delete4:22,
DeleteWe?
What sword did you draw out of a rock that empowered you to speak for everyone? Why not just write your own opinion using the appropriate first-person personal pronoun, and leave it at that? Some of us are long-time residents, and enjoy a fine pint or glass of wine at our local establishments.
Maybe you wouldn't be wound so tight if you had a nice Pinot Noir at sunset on the patio at Wine Steals. Or maybe splurge on a Barolo watching the dolphins and surfers from the deck at Pacific Coast Grill. Or relax by the fire with a good friend at Solterra with a Costa Azul Zinfandel. Or even chat up the brew masters about their craft as you tip a Devotion Ale at the new Lost Abbey Confessional.
Or if drinking isn't your thing, that's cool too. You could just relax and acknowledge that we all have different tastes and preferences. This would be a mighty boring place if everyone thought and acted just like you.
I'd wager most of the folks in the above named establishments at this very moment are Encinitas residents. Most of them are not bad people, and don't drink in excess or harm anyone else. They are your neighbors, family, and friends, and their only crime is not doing life your way.
We should enforce our laws and punish offenders, but be careful how broad your paintbrush is.
Cheers, Salut, Prost, Xinxin, and
"Eins, zwei, drei, g’suffa; Zicke-Zacke-Zicke-Zacke Hoy, Hoy, Hoy!"
6:16 you can paint the booze hounds with whatever color you desire but the facts are simply this
Delete1. last week the cardiff town center courtyard was kid and family friendly
2. today there are now drinking men lining outdoor bars leering at woman and children-
you might like and prefer alcoholic enviornments for your kids- I don't. If the bar owners were interested in the community they would have kept the bar closed inside, the fact the opted to open it up and expose the drinkers to residents means they put profits before families
Thankfully, we live in a society that champions freedom.
DeleteThe owners of private property, their tenants, and patrons have the freedom to enjoy the frosty beverage of their choice under the blue sky. And you have the freedom to withhold your financial support, express your moral outrage in writing here, and shelter your offspring as you see fit.
Everybody wins. Deity bless America.
7:32 wrong
Deletethe wrong the Abby was given special variances to have open windows and exterior bar while serving booze , they were also given a break on parking requirments
special access for a few at city hall
"A variance is the process by which an applicant can request deviation from the set of rules a municipality applies to land use and land development, typically a zoning ordinance, building code or municipal code." --Wikipedia.
DeleteThere is no record of a variance sought or approved for this business.
Before those grapes of yours turned sour, you should have de-stemmed them, crushed them, and transferred the must into a primary fermentation tank for a couple of weeks.
Leering drunks oggleing moms at the Cardiff Courtyards - easy to see how one might want to change the subject. I don't want my kids hanging out there anymore. I suspect the Sambazone business will go down with the drunks now on site-
DeletePeople drink at Rimmels and watch the kids play, it is a family place. The Abby is a pub with loud intoxicated men
Summarizing:
Delete• People enjoying life.
• You, not approving.
• Men, men, men, "leering," insecurity.
• Powerless to impose your viewpoint on others.
•. The rest of us, moving on, enjoying life.
• You, staying behind, rehashing a lost cause.
8:16- denial is not a river in Egypt
DeleteSImply put:
Cardiff town center before the Abby- kid friendly
Cardiff town center after the Abby- drinking establishment
You- unable to see the difference.
Me- Moved on from the Cardiff town center last week-end
Note to you- the town center north plaza was DEAD last night at 5:30. Where were the kids and families usually at East Coast and Sambazone? - no where to be seen. Who was there?- loud cackling pub crawlers downing pints and has beens that never were. Perhaps you joined them.
8:17 PM
DeleteThe planning department uses conditions or just plain ignores the municipal code instead of variances. What would be called a variance with the requirement of a public hearing is gone. Blame that on the Jeff Murphy.
9:37,
DeleteIndeed. I recall the zoning was specifically for wine tasting, not beer. But the Planning Department and Commission decided that a beer bar was close enough.
To be fair, Lost Abbey serves a lot of beers that are extremely high in alcohol, so that's pretty close to wine.
Must be Wag Halen at the Lost Abbey.
DeleteHey, we live in a capitalist system, if you don't like it, vote with your feet. BTW, I've never seen a problem between kids and pints at any of the local pizza ports. And I'm as big an opponent of stupid, drunken behavior as anyone, that's why I don't head out to the Daley Double at 1am on a Saturday night.
Delete-MGJ
7:24 it is intellectually dishonest to compare a bar -the abby, with the family centric pizza port. they are as far apart in purpose and clinetele as night and day. That is why kids are not allowed in th abby
DeleteStopped in yesterday for the first time. The Wipeout IPA was very good. Recommended. They mentioned that they welcome food brought in from Zenbu, Rimmels, East Coast, or Seaside. They even keep Parmesan and pepper flake shakers on the bar for your pizza.
DeleteI believe 8:08 is correct that by rule they are adult only, but grab a slice and a pricey ale and there isn't much difference between this and Pizza Port. Besides, I thought 8:08's gripe was the effect on children being exposed to alcohol. If so, isn't Pizza Port worse, by bringing children into the establishment where adults are drinking? Would 8:08 approve of a more "family friendly" Lost Abbey open to children and families? Somehow I doubt it.
But then, logical consistency isn't really 8:08's thing. After all, I suspect this is the same person who said they had already "moved on" from the courtyard to take business elsewhere. Then, nine words later in the same post, noted that the courtyard was "dead" (correction: "DEAD") at 5:30.
Logical consistency. Maybe we should sit back and watch 8:08 debate 8:08.
Pizza Port serves beer, The Abby serves beer. And for me if they don't allow kids, that's fine. My point was kids and beer can coexist.
DeleteThis is a simple case of if you don't like it, don't come, but these guys have a great rep in San Diego, and I for one will be supporting them..Sorry, nothing stays the same forever. I liked the Mexican place that used to be down there in the 90's, and it's not there either...
9:34 exactly - you like booze centric drinking halls not family centric community centers. I went to get a pizza at east coast tonight - the abbyAbby was loud - worst of all the place stinks like yeast and beer - smell likdliked a frat house. I didn't get a pizza - I left.
Delete9:08 clearly you have a monetary interest in the Abyy- nice advertis. Good luck with your booze halll
DeleteThese are the best comments ever. I'm gonna go find a museum to post them in cause clearly we are looking at a time window to the early 1900s. Jeez who even uses phrases like "booze hound" and "leering."
DeleteThank goodness you all have no say in who gets to establish a business.
You should check out Lost Abbey's tab rooms, they are pretty hip and nice, though possibly too high class for your tastes.
Like consuming alcohol is a positive endeavor.
ReplyDeleteDone correctly, it can be a very positive endeavor - even at the bars of Encinitas!!
Delete- The Sculpin
3:50 Yeah, right. NOT.
DeleteWell then tell that to 10:26 - they don't seem to share your view.....
Delete"People drink at Rimmels and watch the kids play, it is a family place."
8:42
Deletea night of dinner with the family does not equal a night of drinking and leering at housewives
"Objectivity is relative to the observer."
ReplyDeleteI believe you mean subjectivity 3:49... Thank you for your intelligent, fact-based commentary.
I can confidently say Dalakranz is out in 2016. Bad call on PV, supporting profits selling booze over quality of life for citizens- made him a one term dalakranz.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a fixation on "leering at housewives" or "Leering drunks oggleing moms". So are these men (it appears to only be men but I see plenty of women at other brewery tasting rooms) staring at women? Do they make catcalls or loud comments to the women? How was it when Yogi's was still in the center?
ReplyDeleteWhile it can be a pain in the ass, I'd wait until the newness wears off before passing final judgement. The Lost Abby tasting room may just be attracting some outsiders until the next new cool place opens somewhere.
Maybe the moms are only worth leering at after a few beers?
