Action video camera maker GoPro has leased 45,000 square feet in the remodeled former San Diego International Floral Exchange building in Carlsbad – boosting the high-profile company’s local footprint.Cardiff locals have reported the GoPro people transforming the scene downtown as bankers in business suits became common next to regulars in flip flops at the local cafes.
Based in San Mateo, GoPro was founded in 2004 by University of California San Diego graduate Nick Woodman, an avid surfer who found a better way to capture photos and videos on the waves.
Today, GoPro dominates the digital camera and camcorder market. It has more than 1,000 employees worldwide. In San Diego County, GoPro employs 80 workers at an older, 13,000-square-foot office building in Cardiff, according to real estate research firm CoStar.
This move sounds like not really a policy problem with Encinitas government, but just not enough office space in Cardiff for a growing company.
No big whoop, billion dollar companies are screaming to come to Encinitas...
ReplyDeleteIf only they would have offered to name the fruit trees "GoPro Grove" instead of trying to promote former council member egos.
ReplyDeleteThe eponymous Cardiff Software grew up and moved to Vista before a series of acquisitions put them in HP. If you fill out medical forms, chances are your forms are being processed by Cardiff's Teleform software.
ReplyDeleteI heard they were tired of all the drunken shinaganns going on all over downtown encinitas and cardiff. PB Norte is what Encinitas is being called around the state.
ReplyDeleteWhat an idiot! Get a life.
Delete10:11,
DeleteYou heard? From where?
First of all, they have only been in that location a couple of years. Nothing has changed in Cardiff since they moved in.
Second, it costs a crap ton of money to move a business. There is no way what's going on two miles away in downtown affected the decision.
Third, businesses normally operate M-F 8-6. They likely don't know or care what goes on in the neighborhood outside of those hours unless someone breaks a window or otherwise damages property. Anyone have evidence that was happening?
10:11 makes shit up.
I heard it from a couple of my LA buds. There LA sons come all the way down from LA to party at Encinitas. Same as Pomona/ Corona area.
DeleteGreat just what we want. Keep up the great work City Council
Encinitas none throughout the state no - Nuevo PB Norte!! come get fucked up and party like you did in Rosarito in 1980. NO cops around. You can pee/fO*(k, steal from the locals. No ones watching and their City Council doesn't care. They will sacrifice quality of life and property values for Sales tax from all that booze. Nice choice City Council.
8:33 PM
DeleteSo people drive all the way down from LA/Orange county just to go to Encinitas bars? All we have are restaurant/bars some with music. You can find plenty of that up there and if they're all ready driving down, the Gaslamp is just an additional 30 minutes and has a lot more to offer.
You do know GoPro is headquartered in San Mateo, not Cardiff, right? I don't know why they chose Cardiff for their software development offices in the first place but I'm sure they take a regional view and looked at properties from an internal needs perspective. One quick call to any realtor will tell them that Encinitas doesn't have the kind of office space they were looking for but Carlsbad, Vista and San Marcos would. So they picked Carlsbad.
ReplyDelete"I heard they were tired of all the drunken shinaganns going on all over downtown encinitas and cardiff." Yeah, sure.
"billion dollar companies are screaming to come to Encinitas" Name one, And I don't mean retail outlets. It has to be a company looking to locate an office in Encinitas. There were IBM offices on Encinitas Blvd some years back but they're long gone.
3:25 was projecting sarcasm. It's never good for a city to lose any jobs let alone 80 well paid citizens.
DeleteWith some of the serious comments on this blog, the sarcastic ones can be hard to differentiate.
DeleteAs a matter of policy, there isn't much land in Encinitas for large office buildings. Not like our neighbors to the north. Whether or not that's a good thing, it just is and the general plan won't be changed to allow more. So get used to companies with larger office space requirements moving out. From an economic perspective, there is no reason to stay in Encinitas. Nixon is expanding its current square footage to accommodate growth but I doubt it can grow much more in its current location which means moving out of Encinitas.
That Nixon building was a temporary holding plot until Stack and Pack high density became profitable again. The cute original building it is now was likley re-zoned for triple story stack and pack as all the other lots on the 101 were- when the time is right they will move out and stack and pack will move in - destroying yet another unique Encinitas building
DeleteAt least in Cardiff there is still a chance- they tried to re-zone that Go Pro building for stack and pack- the residents shot it down for now, and ran Norby out of town in the process- during the Cardiff Specific Plan meetings
Now the city is back trying to weasle stack and pack back into Cardiff with the Housing Element
3:34 PM
DeleteThe downtown specific plan allowed a third story in that corridor is the development included affordable housing if that is what you mean by rezoned. The downtown specific plan was adopted in 1994. That is how Pacific Station is three stories. Not sure about your characterization of the Nixon building being "a temporary holding plot" as I think Nixon owns the building.
You sure are enamored with the phrase "Stack and Pack".
3:58 PM Correction. I meant "if" not "is":
Delete"The downtown specific plan allowed a third story in that corridor if the development included affordable housing ..."
Prop A took care of the Council deciding it's in the "best interests" of residents to allow the third story.
DeleteThe opportunity to vote on specific plan upzoning is what's gotten Kranz' panties in a bundle.
Yes, Kranz seems to have taken a hard right or left on Prop. A. He has bemoaned the fact that many buildings cannot be 3 stores. Oh the tangled webs we weave when we try to deceive. The question is" Did Tony really like Prop A until the "big guns" in town started courting him? I would say he did. But, it is hard hang on to our base, when the likes of Meyer and Ecke can offer him a lot more. His new haircut and duds tell us a lot of what we need to know about Tony. I kind of feel sorry for him. He seems like a nice person, but he has rather low self esteem, so it feels good to him for be liked by the "in crowd".
DeleteCurrent city council with the exception of Blakespear is all about stacknpac huntington beach style.
DeleteSell out the citizens quality of life for developers profits.
Its that simple.
Tony is a yokel that was easily swayed by the "big boys". They probably implied that it was more advantageous to tow their line than act as some crusader for obscure causes.. His free trip to Israel enlightened him to the benefits of cooperation/obedience. The new do and duds are window dressing - he is still a yokel.
DeleteObscure causes? The outsized upzoning Tony, developer cronies, and most of the council want to push through in the housing element update is hardly a side issue.
Delete3:58
DeleteStack and Pack is exactly the appropriate description for Pacific Station, One Paseo, the Marco Goanzlez litigated project in Solana Beach uinder review-
and the complete and entire re-zoning on the 101 to promote high density one size fits all profit driven community character destroying zoning approved for the 101
You would prefer residents not know the turuth-
Only in Cardiff and along El Camino Real has Stack and Pack zoning temporarily been delayed
The Housing Element Update seeks to do away with the current small town zoning and hyper-densify Encinitas and Cardiff to benefit for profit developers
10:47 AM
Delete"Stack and Pack" must be your mantra, repeating it over and over again to clear your mind of all conscious thought.
Sorry it interferes with your plans to talk us all into "sustainable living," 6:00. Stack n' pack threatens what Encinitas residents love about our town and the description paints an accurate picture of what developers are drooling over.
Delete8:43 PM -- Speaking of drooling.
Delete8:54
DeleteStack and pack - is the mantra of the Pacific Station developer who high density units into encinitas increasing pollution, cars, and stoplights while reducing open space
stack and pack is the mantra of Jerome Stocks, Mark Muir Kristin Gaspar, Danny Dalager as they sell out small town encinitas zoning to rezone to increase density to benefit their developer campaing donors and friends
Stack and pack is the mantra of Lisa Shaffer, Tony Kranz and Teresa Barth as the seek to rewrite zoning to increase housing densities while destroying small town zoning
Stack and pack is the mantra of attorneys seeking city council settlements to benefit their for profit developer friends
It appears the ones drooling are you and developers afraid the housing element update will be defeated - perhaps you are drooling over lost $$$$$$$
10:02 PM
DeleteYour Pacific Station argument (if you can call it that) makes no sense. If you want to claim that Pacific Station ruined the ambiance of downtown, that's one thing but to claim "increasing pollution, cars and stoplights while reducing open space" makes no sense as those impacts would be the same no matter where those people located but I'll give you the added stoplight on 101. Unless, of course, you believe that Pacific Station allowed people to move to Encinitas that wouldn't be able to live here otherwise. I hope that's not your argument.
If the housing element is defeated at the polls then we'll have a judge oversee its passage and you won't get to vote on it. I know you'll claim this is a scare tactic but I assure you it will be reality. Just ask the cities up north who lost their lawsuits.
I guess you just can't get your mind wrapped around the fact that someone can support certain courses of action without being one of "them". I have no stake in any kind of development just as you appear to have no stake in reality.
So go ahead, shut down your mind and endlessly chant "Stack and pack", "Stack and pack", "Stack and pack".
9:31
DeleteYou have no argument. You simply would prefer the term "Stack and pack" not find it's way into the Housing Element discussion.
Why- because it is a clear, concise, accurate description of the zoning changes you and the crony developers would force on the residents of Encinitas.
Stack and Pack captures and crystalizes what will happen to the communities of EL Camino Real, Olivenhain and Cardiff if the Housing Element passes
Stack and Pack motivated Desert Rose citizens to suit the city and win- forcing loud mouth me first for profit attorneys to cry in their beer at the Union
Stack and Pack motivated residents to pass Prop A- to protect their environment, community and quality of life from increased traffic, density and pollution
It is you who would have residents and taxpayers shut down their minds- you can't get your mind wrapped around the resident opposition to Stack and Pack becuase you see $$$ not community-
It is you who seek to mislead, misinform and scare residents with bogus claims of judges deciding local land-use
" Say no to Stack and Pack" say yes to community character
hey 9:31 - you are wrong. I used to love having breakfast at Honey's. The sun would come up over the hill on the highland and warm the sidewalk and me and my dog-
Deletethen they built pacific station. it took up the whole lot, and it went up three stories. the resulr? Honey's is now in the cold, it's a loss of open space, the environment is impacted with more cars going not to a neighborhood market but to destination whole paycheck-
Honey's shade fest. Pacific Station is the worst project ever in Encinitas and no close second. Bad planning in Encinitas.
DeleteLet's start a California Shade Commission and STOP 3 story buildings in Encinitas. Oh wait, we already have Prop A. Nevermind.
Delete4:02 PM
DeleteFirst of all, I couldn't give a shit about the $$$ and I do care about community character. But that seems to be the only way you can argue is to try to paint me as one of "Them".
Second, lawsuits have happened to other cities already and they came out on the rather expensive losing end. The one thing Encinitas has going for it is that, unlike the Bay Area, the affordable housing organizations here in San Diego don't appear very litigious.
The desert rose lawsuit was about requiring an EIR, not whether the development should be allowed. An EIR doesn't automatically mean a project will be denied. That decision is on appeal. It will be interesting how the BIA lawsuit gets settled as they are now in negotiations. I doubt the BIA is negotiating due to lack of funds.
HCD will require the housing element to clearly spell out how the city intends to fulfill its RHNA obligations. It requires a detailed site inventory. Everyone will get to see where and how the city proposes to upzone.
But "stack and pack" is your mantra because you want to instill fear in people's minds of the image that Encinitas will become a dense urban highrise. That ain't going to happen ever.
I wasted enough time on this. Feel free to continue your mindless repetition.

Delete4:58 PM
Delete"ocraM"?? I assume you're trying to be insulting. Do you mean OCMAR, as in "oh cry me a river"? Or are you referring to Ocram, final boss of Terraria? Sorry, I'm not a game player.
It's tough to get insulted when you can't even figure out what it is.
I figured it was somebody's name spelled backwards.
Delete10:04 AM
DeleteHey, why didn't I think of that. Good call. "Marco", of course. The name we dare not say (write). Sorry, I'm not Marco. I'm not even a lawyer.
Now I'm not sure if I should be insulted by 4:58 PM.
I asked the president of Leucadia National stock company to join Leucadia Merchants Association back in 1995, and he did!

Yes Encinitas is now a party destination. That is a fact nobody would be proud of.
ReplyDeleteDon't let the door hit you in the ....... you know the line.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the only thing attractive in Encinitas are the bars. Yep, good for your health, good for your body, good for your mind. Stay numb it will take all your troubles away.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder we can't attract good companies. There is no room left for them.
why does everyone argue on these comment boards? does it make you feel better about yourself?
