Fire in Seaside Market complex

U-T:
Firefighters were working to put out a fire on the roof of a Cardiff commercial building that houses two restaurants Thursday morning.

Someone called 911 around 9:50 a.m. to report a fire on San Elijo Drive near Birmingham Drive in a complex that houses several tenants, including the eateries Zenbu and Rimels, as well as the Seaside Market.
The Lord reportedly spared the Lost Abbey Confessional.

  1. With the COE firefighters on the job I'm sure it's a total loss.

    1. 2:26- I was the one that called and the Fire Dept. was there in about 2 minutes. I'd say that's pretty good time. Smoke was billowing out of the building that houses Rimels and Zenbu. All in all I think it took 6 fire trucks and paramedics to get it under control. Personally, I think they did a great job. I never saw a dozen trucks, but I didn't stay to watch. I just happened to be a Seaside Market when I saw the smoke. Give credit when credit is due. No one was injured and they could have been. Oh well, I guess people will always complain about something. Next thing you know you'll be complaining about that the new city manager is a woman. Oh no!

  2. Nearly a dozen fire trucks?? Seems like a lot.

    From Coast News:
ENCINITAS— A fire broke out in Zenbu and Rimel’s Rotisserie around 9:30 a.m. this morning. The restaurants are located in the same building.

Nobody was injured and the cause of the flames is still being determined, according to Encinitas Fire Marshal Anita Pupping.

She couldn’t yet say whether it started on the top or bottom floor.

“We saw smoke from the ceiling, somebody called and it’s still under investigation as far as what the cause was. We’re still investigating whether it went from the kitchen and (went) up to the rooftop through a unit or not,” said Pupping.

The fire in the restaurant, located in the Seaside Market shopping center, forced surrounding businesses to evacuate.

Pet groomers from Grooming Tail Pet Salon evacuated all of the dogs and one cat out of the top floor suite within five minutes and stood by while firefighters contained the fire.

“We were just grooming and I saw everybody looking up at the roof and one of the ladies came in and let us know there was a fire,” said Alexis Waterhouse, a groomer at Grooming Tail. “We just got out of there as fast as we could.”

Nearly a dozen fire trucks from Encinitas, Carlsbad and Solana Beach fire departments and two ambulances responded to the fire.

Firefighters cut open portions of the roof.

The fire caused a closure along an eastern portion of Birmingham Drive while firefighters worked to contain the fire.

East Coast Pizza and The Lost Abbey’s Confessional were also evacuated.

Seaside Market and Starbucks remained open and the Liverpool Drive entrance to the parking lot remained open for shoppers to get in and out.

  3. Come on Coast News:

"The fire caused a closure along an eastern portion of Birmingham Drive"

Yeah, it could have caused a threat to those on Crest Drive.

  4. The new city manager for Encinitas is the current city manager of San Juan Capistrano a city that gets sued over their city council decisions. Wait for the fireworks to begin.

    1. How can one expect an incompetent city council to hire a competent city manager?

    2. If that is the case, then it would be Karen Burst, former city manager in Del Mar.

    6. Kranz can discuss buying the Del Mar Fairground now!

    7. I didn't know there was a contest going on. Someone just mentioned that a woman would possibly be our next city manager. Another one said she was current manager at San Juan Capistrano. Gee, that was not hard to figure out with a little research.

    8. 8:03-An even easier way to find out is to read this coming weeks City Council agenda. It's on the City's website and her name is right there for all to see. I sure hope she knows what she is getting in to, and I also hope she is a keeper. Getting pretty tired of changing partners, so to speak. Kranz may have to forget the fairgrounds and find a new place to live. Maybe he can be the permanent caretaker at PV?

    9. 8:34 That was my research, but thanks for the suggestion.

    10. 9:25- I'm sorry if I offended you. I meant no disrespect. I think you did a great job in finding out about her. There are many ways to discover things and if I sounded pompous I apologize. It's been a long day, but that's still no excuse for what I can now see was rude behavior on my part.No take backs when posting as anonymous or I would delete my message.

  7. OH SHIT. Who selected that Ego maniac!

She doesn't know fricken common sense if it bit her in her big fat Ass!

Ask anyone in Del Mar. They are glad to be rid of her evil ways.

WTF? We need to elect real City Council members. These travesties are really bad for our town.

  8. Lets shoot for 1 year in Encinitas. Bad mistake!!!!!

  9. OK… OK.. .settle down.

So we have a bitch with some Ego… whats new?

If she comes in and cleans house with department head and mid management, she will win my support.

If she comes in singing the praises of existing staff, SHE NEEDS TO GO.

Karen- Better think about your strategy. This will not be an easy stint for you big girl. I hope you clean house and get City Council and the residents behind you!

Come on Girl. Do the right thing. Clean house.

    1. A "bitch with some Ego?" Really? If she were a man, would you be saying it quite that way 9:45? And, adding insult to injury, if she is a large woman who cares. So was Phil Cotton and I don't recall anyone slamming him for his weight. Let's see how she works out before chopping her up and sending her down the river. Good grief.

  10. Karen Brust?

Water authority? no experience. perfect for Encinitas.

    She will be crucified. Guarantied.

She is the only one who thinks she is special. maybe her kid.

  11. She was a train wreck in Capistrano and Del Mar….

Why would the Council committee of select her?

They lost major points in my opinion.

    Lets see what happens.

  12. Who knows her? I just Googled her and I do see that she switches jobs about every 2 to 3 years. Can't figure out if it is because of pay increases, or what the deal is. Did the City Council in Del Mar ask her to leave, How about San Juan? She has lots of water experience, which is a positive. It seems, from some of the comments, that some of you may personally know her. Would you mind telling the rest of us what you know? It would be helpful. Thanks.

    1. She doesn't have water experience, she was their finance director. Probably got an easy degree in accounting or finance from some second rate school. I can wait to see her resume.

  13. Her name has been circulating in Encinitas for about a month. The announcement was delayed because of discussions about compensation. It's now out in the Agenda Report, which was posted yesterday..

I agree with 11:43 pm above. There's a lot of speculation going on and not much fact. I googled and didn't learn much. It's almost "normal" for city managers to move around a lot. Encinitas is not much different than other adjacent cities. Since 2000 Encinitas will have had 4 city managers. Kerry Miller was the longest with 6 years.

    1. I just hope that the CIty Managers that we get in Encinitas are not like bad priests who seem to be moved from one place to another when they abuse their power.

I for one am not impressed by "experience" when the experience is bad like in the case of Gus Vina. His pattern in both Sacramento and Encinitas was to bring on a team of managers who he paid unreasonably large salaries at the expense of the worker bees at the city. He used our money to buy loyalty to himself--not to motivate the best results throughout the staff.

Now he is weaving revisionist history in his new job by saying that Encinitas citizens were not involved. Some of us feel so involved that we feel compelled to warn the new council he is working with.

I heard she has no vision. What can she possibly do for Encinitas besides bad decisions.

    7. 11:01, And what a better world it would be if lessons showing how to best use our time, would begin on Sesame Street. Gaspar used the rock / jar analogy to stress that as a city we need to put our important things first. And at the time her unspoken point was that Pacific View was not one of those big rocks. It was not a magic trick. It was a physical representation of utilizing a most efficient method of spending a city's time and money. Whether you agreed with her or not. But Barth certainly didn't.

    8. 3:46 Gaspar is as stupid as she looks. Always trying to impress, but not quite getting the job done. The rock/sand fiasco was laughable. You would think she had an audience of third graders.

    9. 3:46 PM You actually think Ga$par'$ grammar school visual of rocks and sand was some sort of profound 'analogy"?? Some people are easily impressed - it was geared for simpletons, of which class she is in. She seems clueless on the city's fiscal priorities - pension reform is certainly not on her agenda. She is a vacuous talking head - that is all her "handlers" want.

    10. I didn't vote for Gaspar, but I disagree with the idea that she is stupid. I find her to be very smart and quite professional since she is considerate of speakers.

If you want to talk about talk about one of her votes or a position, this is the place to do it. The rocks and sand issue happened a year and a half ago. I'm tired of reading about it.

  16. Gus Vina also claimed/claims to have expertise in finance. As far as I can tell, he was good at tapping our money to use for personal benefit by hiring a spin doctors and many questionable consultants who citizens were against.
