Sheriffs run DUI checkpoint in Olivenhain far away from problem downtown 101 area; catch no drunk drivers

Good news Encinitas!
A DUI checkpoint staffed by San Diego County sheriff’s deputies in Encinitas between July 3 and July 4 yielded unlicensed drivers, uninsured drivers and scofflaw youth probationary drivers but no one was found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, authorities said.

The checkpoint was staffed between 8:21 p.m. July 3 and 1:37 a.m. July 4 in the 1800 block Olivenhain Road, Encinitas.

  1. Thats because they had a sign "DUI Checkpoint Ahead" at the intersection of Armagosa Rd and Olivenhain with no officers. Drunk drivers simply went to the right or left at the light to avoid the checkpoint. There were several 4th of July parties in the Willowcreek neighborhood that had tons of children in the street that suddenly had 80 speeding cars looking for a way out.

  2. Well, what a safe place for them to set up and the results show how effective the sheriffs were while they were avoiding our downtown or cruising the beaches on their bikini patrol over the long weekend. Just how much did their serve and protect services cost us this time?

I can't wait for the sheriffs captain to come back next time and ask for the big bucks for, wait for it, go ahead and use your imagination. I can't think of a good reason for her to return and justify whatever she asks for.

We should be asking her to prove the worth of all the millions we pay her dept. for and don't get. Time to play a little hardball and get our money's worth out of them or hire our own and save millions.

Bob Bonde had some good ideas on how to get our money's worth out of police and fire services and was completely ignored. Our city is so flush we don't need to look for ways to save. Right. Not!!!!

  3. Did they catch any tipsy horses on fermented oats? Who chose this location? 4 cops altogether on the beach in one 4 wheeler, cruising around. Sounds like they need a staff reduction, rather than additional personnel.

  4. I swear this sheriff's department gets more stupid every day. They weren't sent downtown where all the drinking was going on, but having a jolly good time on Olivenhain Rd. Gimme a break.

The new city manager needs to put an end to this nonsense.

  5. I have never seen a system where people work at the appearance of doing their jobs. Shaffer and Kranz in particular like for poeple to support time-wasting activities so that they can claim that they did something.

I would rather identify the most critical issues and tackle one or two of the big problems like pensions, traffic, or repairs. They should focus resources on where they can do the most good.

  6. Um, this wasn't in Olivenhain. It's like the main exit route from Downtown Encinitas to cities to the east. Amazingly, there is a need for city services away from the 101 corridor.

    1. Do people from Vista and San Marcos often drive to Union and Shelter to get drunk? Apparently they didn't last weekend.

    2. The danger caused by drunk drivers to citizens is on 101 and not in Olivenhain. The fact that drivers were given a clear warning of the checkpoint and ability to turn off onto another street resulted in no tickets and much worse, sends a message that Encinitas is NOT SERIOUS about ENFORCING driving while drunk. Sending this message is much worse than doing nothing at all because it gives those who would drink and drive permission to do it in the future. It also is very wasteful of citizens hard-earned tax dollars who are paying them to get NO PROTECTION FROM THEIR CITY.

It seriously looks like city officials must be getting payoffs from business establishments on 101. Save our money: If you are not going to enforce DUI behavior, do nothing at all.

    3. I think the cops have to post signs as to avoid the defense of "entrapment", as absurd as that seems.

    4. How many squad cars does it take to set up a DUI check point? I can tell you as I was passing by at the time they were setting up. There were about a dozen cop cars there, possibly more.

In the meantime, someone who needed help probably had to wait.

    5. Based on the above comments I have to assume that most of you are Ph.D's - you're just not making any sense at all.........

    6. 4:02 Well, the police certainly don't have Ph.D's. That is obvious. All those that get into the police force can't do much else so the lowest of the low get in. Some even commit crimes. Some are so dumb and ugly. Some of the women look like men (short hair cuts, low voices, and no fashion sense).

Did I hit a nerve yet?

    7. No - keep swinging......

  7. Agree. The checkpoints should be south of Swami's on 101 where there's no opportunity to turn around. Easy pickin's, but maybe they don't want that.

  8. If they really wanted to catch people, they could have set up on the westbound side of Olivenhain Road to catch all of the parents drinking wine at the TGIF concert at Stagecoach that night headed home in Encinitas.

I still find it laughable that the expectation is for police to only protect the streets and residents on the 101 corridor. The volume of traffic on Leucadia Blvd/Olivenhain Road is as high, if not higher than 101. Not to mention that Scott Valley park had a drunk driver slam into the gate a couple months ago (that the Parks Department has still not fixed) and had a drunk driver hit a brick wall near the Amargosa/Olivenhain intersection. But by all means, only enforce on the 101.
