Tim Baird partied it up in Pittsburgh & Boston on school district credit card

Two years ago, EUSD Superintendent Tim Baird was criticized for partying with the school board at an expensive retreat.

But you can't keep a party animal down.

From the Inbox:
Attached is the April 2016 statement for the Encinitas Union School District credit card issued to superintendent Tim Baird for district business.

$8,372.06 was charged by Baird that month, the vast majority for his travel to Pittsburgh, PA for the "Innovation Cluster Meeting" on Feb. 21-23, and for Baird and board members Emily Andrade and Patricia Sinay to attend the National School Boards Association Conference in Boston on April 8-11.

Note the upscale hotels (Westin in Pittsburgh; Marriott in Boston) and the meals/drinks at various bars, brew pubs, and restaurants.

EUSD Board Policy 3350 prohibits using district funds to pay for alcohol. Apparently the $74.62 Baird charged on April 1 at "Pittsburgh Bar" and the $76.20 he charged at "Cisco Brew Pub" on April 11 were for soda pop.

Baird himself approved his own credit card bill for payment.

  1. Baird is still spending the scam $10 million he got from the City for Pacific View.

    1. YEP... he sure is. One of his many CFO's got special permission from the state so that money from Pacific View could go into the general fund (as opposed to a one time property improvement).

General fund with a rubber stamping board = Zero Accountability

    2. It can go into the General Fund, but it's supposed to go for a one time purpose, according to Education Code; this expenditure is to be approved at a public meeting. It shouldn't be for ongoing expenses.

Baird is corrupt and he is enabled by a compliant Board of Trustees, which is in denial, with big blinders on. We can vote for new, accountable, leadership and elect Schneider and Pingree to the EUSD Board of Trustees.

  2. And this guy was given a superior performance rating a few months back by the stooges that share in the partying. The blatant disregard for propriety in personal expenses on the public dime should put him on notice for suspension leading to termination.

  3. There is no need for a superintendent to spend 1000s of dollars or stay in 5 star hotels on the District dime. This Board and Baird think our tax dollars are their monopoly bank. Vote Leslie Schneider and Anne-Katherine Pingree to rid of the corruption!

    1. I'm sure there are plenty of legitimate grievances surrounding Baird and his management style, but I assure you those hotels are NOT 5 star hotels!! Food is food. Without seeing the receipts it's difficult to say that alcohol was purchased using the company card. It may have been purchased using a personal card. Regardless, it doesn't fit the narrative so go ahead - make things up!

As for Schneider and Pingree - are they secularists? No real mention of either in their materials.

    2. Both Pingree and Schneider are part of the anti-yoga crew...Standing to the right in their campaign photo is none other than Kristin Gaspar...

    3. Skulpin...are they secularists??m Let me guess you're an atheist and that atheism in your mind is good for underparented children espexially boys? Religion is vital to eatablishing values and principles for children is it not? BTW do you even have kids?

    4. Not quite - I'm of the opinion that religion should stay out the public schools. I agree that religion is one of the many sources of morality and ethics that can be used to raise a child. I have no idea what you're referring to as underparented children. Regardless, the teaching of religion is the responsibility of the parents. Yes, I have kids (adults now).

    6. Religion is a lie. Is it moral to lie to kids?

    7. Oh 9:43 - stop being so silly. Religion is not a lie. Religion is not intended to be factual, despite those who wish it to be so. Religion offers codes to live by through stories and parables. How are the telling of stories and parables lying?

    8. Religion is an elaborate rationalization developed to justify a false premise.

Of course it's a lie. It's also the worst scourge ever inflicted on humanity.

    9. No matter what your personal view on religion, it doesn't really have a place in our public schools. Religion is something to be taught at home and in church. School is for learning skills to be able to go on and contribute in society.

    10. Religion is a huge net negative on history's scorecard. It shouldn't be taught anywhere. It's terribly destructive fiction.

  4. Baird's failure to disclose trips paid by Sonima was a bigger deal. This one probably not so much.

Conferences typically negotiate a favorable rate when they block a large number of rooms and conference space together for an event. In fact, because the total price is dependant on filling rooms, it's often required that conference attendees book rooms through the event, and must stay at the venue.

Also, it's possible to eat dinner at a gastropub.

Notice the policy isn't against using the credit card, but rather on who ultimately pays for the alcohol. When you come back and do your expense reports, typically the software has flags for charges that should be paid by the employer vs. personal charges. If part of the dinner was alcohol, he could flag booze charges as personal, and EUSD would not remit those amounts to the credit card account--the employee would be accountable for repayment.

You'd have to have the records from the expense reporting system to know if alcohol was declared as a personal expense. If

    1. The records of the expense reports prove nothing if they are not reported honestly. This is a problem in private business and, I imagine, an even bigger problem when public money is involved with little incentive to keep expenses down.

Baird has involved himself in a series of questionable actions. Each adds to the previous one, and at some point, the total becomes very serious.

    2. So, in the absence of evidence, we should assume he violated EUSD policy?

  6. He brought Yoga to schools! He is a great guy and the anti yoga crowd need to get with the benefits it has had on education which are real.

    1. It's not a matter of being anti-Yoga. I support Yoga, but there is a financial conflict of interest here, with Baird being paid for trips and for being on the Board of a Yoga Foundation, the same foundation, which was funding Yoga in the School District, then withdrew its financial support.

Baird also could have avoided a lot of controversy had he allowed parents to "opt in" instead of belatedly giving them an opportunity to opt out of the Yoga program.

Because parents want accountability and more open government does not make them anti Yoga, or "secularists."

  7. I am no way defending Baird but one has to be careful of accusing him of spending money on booze until one sees the actual receipt.

Even though it was clearly on the EUSD Palm Springs retreat agenda that "Happy Hour was in Tim's Suite" --the district never produced receipts that spelled out alcohol after many requests for records. So that could mean two things:

    1. He bought it on his own dime or maybe someone on the board bought it

    2. someone covered it up*
    * There have been 3 district CFO's since 2014??????

There are a lot of things that don't add up but I'm sure no one will ever be able to find out.

  9. Let me take a wild guess here...the majority of people on this blog are 60-something atheists that gave up on god and embraced environmental fascism as their new religion and 'their calling' after mostly uninteresting lives fighting feminism under your own roof. And now you are almost in control with you environmentalism so you can say you did something (not) in your feckless lives?

    3. Let me take a wild guess. 3:05 contemplates the thousands of gods who have come and gone over human history, and the billions of followers who are as smart, moral, righteous, and as certain as 3:05 that their god(s) were/are the only real one(s), and that all others are quaint myths.

3:05 considers all that, and still has the arrogance to believe that 3:05's god has an exclusive on morality and truth.

And 3:05 thinks his or her god should be taught to everyone's kids, whether their parents agree or not.

    5. Don't forget to bring your kids...you know the ones living with you since you helped guide them to think that they could actually make a living painting playing the guitar or acting to make a living. One good thing is that you always taught your daughters well about 'free love' and daughters were always available and created A LOT of pleasure for the boys in high school and college. Hopefully some of them actually ended up getting married instead of just get humped...and without any communicable diseases.
