I'm not a proponent of schools supplying iPads for students, but this video is not a convincing argument against it. Sounds to me like this lady is a bad parent of a kid who has some mental health problems & she teaches dumb college kids.
That video made me realize the dangers of two things; the microchip and playing games. So I recycled my Ipad, Monopoly board, Chess set, 5 decks of cards, Scrabble, Anagrams, Yahtzee, Trivial Pursuit, Twister, Tiddly Winks, Lincoln Logs, Battleship, Erector Set, Bingo and Sorry games. At first I thought keeping my football was ok because it got me outside, but then I realized it would only be encouraging myself and others to get concussions, so I buried my Football, Baseball, Soccerball, T-ball, Tetherball, Softball, Tennis Balls, Ping Pong Balls, Golf Balls Medicine Ball and Pin Ball Machines. I'm no good at Basketball so I never had one of those. I'm taking Monday off to find an Encyclopedia Britanica because I can't find a set online. I think those are gonna come back big when everyone gets their head on straight. Seriously though, when you add up all the hours millions have spent on World of War Craft, it currently comes close to 12 million years. (I heard that on Youtube.com so it must be true). In the grand scheme of things, that's gotta be pretty out of touch with making our planet a better place. But the problem with wasting your time online (like I probably am right now), boils down to discipline. I feel sorry for the lady that her 7th grader is rebellious, but come on, that's hardly unusual for that age. Ipads are an incredible learning tool, if one is inclined to learn things worthwhile. I can see her point that ipads become babysitters for teachers who refuse to teach. I did sense a little irony that Mom is posting herself on Youtube with the same tool she's complaining about. But I don't have kids so for me to give advice would be the blind leading the blind. OMG! I forgot to get married and have kids! Maybe if I hadn't played so many games...
I have a child who went through this little iPad experiment at Paul Ecke and it was a good one for the most part because we actually parent our children and take an active role in their daily habits. Rules are set, certain sites are not allowed, always moderation and we monitor her activities. We make sure that the rules are followed or no iPad, iPhone, TV, video games etc.
P.S. Fred your on a role! So funny! Great post.
And yeah... It's fucking hard! That's what you signed up for right?
No wisdom. A stupid idea from a stupid superintended. Fire him. That would be a great lesson to the children That we care about them!
