6/24/15 City Council meeting open thread

The current city council has continued prior councils' practice of not providing written summary minutes of council discussion, but only "action minutes" which state the outcomes. Encinitas Undercover will provide a forum for observers to record what occurs at each council meeting.

Please use the comments to record your observations.

  1. Council did right by voters tonight by standing strong against AB744.

Only weirdness was when Kranz boasted he'd been following the thing for months...but just not talking about it and letting us blow past the deadline to register opposition with the state assembly.

Not exactly something I'd shoot my mouth off about.

    1. Well not a surprise considering his alignment with his new best friend the building industry...watch for him to try clumsily to derail our position with the BIA.

  2. The lack of a concerted effort to fight the BIA case by the staff member who wrote the apologist letter to the BIA was telling. His posture said every thing we need to know about staffs efforts to stand up against the developers interest in our fair city. Thankfully, council didn't buy into it this time and insisted staff rewrite this apologist letter to the BIA to reflect our determination to have our say and not buckle under to a powerless threat from the building industry.

Tonight Severney or whatever his name is, was the sacrificial lamb. He did not reach that position alone. He took one for the team this evening. That this apologist response to the BIA suit ever got this far indicates the problem is not with him but goes much deeper.

Thankfully, at least for tonight, council saw fit to insist that Encinitas stand firm in its opinion that we actually have a say on how we will interpret the demands of Sacramento. I hope this is a benchmark that can be extended to other avenues that are handed down to us, that has no respect of our community character that we are fighting to preserve.

  3. Both McSeveney and the lobbyist Jonathan Clay needed a rap on the knuckles, and they got it last night from the public and the council. It was a rare concurrence of opinion. The city pays Clay nearly $100,000 a year for his services. He was on the phone from Sacramento and listened to the sharp criticism, but didn't answer it directly.

Mayor Gaspar said the the request to withdraw the city's letter was "odd." Odd, in deed. It looked like Clay and McSeveney were not defending the city's position and not doing the job they're paid to do. The council made it clear that a stronger letter is needed. After all the city has been sued by the BIA over the language that AB744 is modifying. I too hope this is a benchmark that persists

  4. It is heartening to see our council support citizens. That is the way that it is supposed to be. Thank you council!

    1. It was interesting to watch Jeff Murphy squirming in the background when the public speakers presented.

Three cheers to our council for taking command of this issue and not letting staff guide this important issue. Council needs to stay on the same team as Encinitas citizens and not on the team with the Planning Department. This way, the entire atmosphere at meetings will change when Council is on the right side.

  5. 9:14, agree. And thank you council for not creating another Sheriff position recently. $28,000,000 per year should cover everything.

  6. I'll admit I haven't watched the Council meeting last night. What happened with the EHA, and the noise problem with drunks downtown. Was anything resolved? Thanks

  7. The EHA! What a joke and a lie. Their only purpose for existing was to defeat the DAO and it worked thanks to certain [we all know who] council members who voted it down.

Bring it back now. Nothing has been done to mitigate the impact on our community of all the bars that have been allowed to come into being downtown.

A saturation point has long been passed. No more bar permits downtown. Go elsewhere. Those that have gotten in can be thankful. Enough is enough.

Nada was done last night about the noise situation. Cleaning up the alley behind the 7/11 seems to be the cause celeb for the moment. Sympathy for the owner is in short supply since he sells alcohol and spoke up against the DAO when he had the chance last year or so or was it two years ago?

Now he has problems. Surprise, surprise. He was part of the EHA support base. Go get them to clean up your drug alley yourself. You earned it. DEMA or whatever it is called these days is silent on their EHA baby. You all helped to create this monster, now deal with it and fix it if you can or change your policy and support a DAO as a show that you can progress and learn something.

    1. EHA is the ugly baby that should be thrown out with the bath water.

  8. It's very telling from a council who supports the drunks and bars rather than the citizens who pay taxes and their salaries.

Wake up council before something tragic happens. By then, it will be too late.

Nothing but talk and rambling and their stupid meetings. Not one of them has any guts to do the right thing. I can't watch them in action any further as they all disgust me.

I will never vote for an incumbent.

  9. City council is totally cureless. Instead of paying for a dedicated police office downtown late night, they fund an increase in life guard budget. Pffff.

What ficking waste of money. They don't do shit and Carlsbad save millions per year because they don't have lifeguards. Yet their beaches are as safe or safer that ours.

What a bad call on City Council. Tony, Lisa, and Mark Strike on you.

    We need new blood.

  10. Masih the destroyer is at it again. Don't let it happen. Only numbers of the caring public will make a difference and let the council know, to once again, tell Masih to take a hike on his one size fits for all street design.

Save the last Monterrey Cypress on Leucadia Blvd, just up from the Roadside Park.

The new owners of the pink house property want it to stay, as it doesn't affect their plans and we can thank all them for that.

The tree is on city property so, as the Tree City we claim to be, Masih naturally wants to cut it down. Go figure.

This type of situation has gotten so old with this particular planner. Who is enabling him? That council continues to thank some of these staff for their performance is at times astounding. Or not.

  11. Maybe he gets paid for every tree that comes down.

  12. Why do they plan on a Sheriff's tactical room in the proposed new Moonlight Lifeguard Facility if there is presently insufficient personnel for the regular street beats? Cart before the horse syndrome?

    1. the tactical room is so the Sheriff can store equipment as well as computers so they can work out of there rather then the station several miles away

    1. No doubt she and Mim will be applying for grants for their non-profit. I would not trust her with funds after many of the financial decisions Barth made while in office.

    2. She could corn-row her hair and do that slow-motion beach running scene for the promo for the grant!
