Olivenhain drug house severely damaged in fire

From an Olivenhain tipster:
- Fire trucks heard late last night
- Plumes of smoke still visible this morning
- RSF and Encinitas fire trucks on the scene
- News vans on the scene
- Appears to be the Olivenhain drug house from earlier EU coverage
Here's 10 News on the story.  10 News confirms it is 1507 Rancho Encinitas, the subject of the December SWAT raid.  As we reported in January, the owners had recently lost a mortgage-related lawsuit against Chase Bank, and were trying to sell the house.

Congratulations to the neighbors of Rancho Encinitas Drive! It looks like your long neighborhood nightmare is finally over.

UPDATE: Body found inside.

UPDATE 7/31/15: The victim was a 23-year-old woman.

UPDATE 8/4/15: The victim has been identified as Shelby Ann Black. May she rest in peace.

Hey, I think you set a record for the first shot at the incoming city manager who won't start for another month. Your own little fair and balanced website.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Just the facts ma'am.

With the history of our elected officials selling out the citizens in favor of development and real estate interests far too many times, it is never too early to try to impress upon Karen how much we need her to step up and separate herself from all that has gone down previously.

As for fair and balanced, that is all we have been seeking and been denied repeatedly. There is a chance for a new day, Karen, and you will have little time to distinguish yourself from your predecessors.

Being a local, you will not be able to plead ignorance of what is needed and who should be shown the door as soon as possible. This community's hopes are on your shoulders. Where will you stand, the status quo, or us?

    2. You forget the city manager works for the council and they set the agenda. Commenters on this blog consistently forget this. And that includes the city attorney. Yes, either one of them can screw up but it's the council driving the bus.

      Delete
    3. Are you kidding me!!! Gus Vina set the entire agenda. Not only did he manipulate so that difficult issues would be presented during vacation times, but he went back over reports from staff and took out material facts!

Are you saying that the Council asks for them to lie to them and make them look incompetent?

      Delete
    4. The current council axed Vina because he too often subverted them and did solo end runs around them. He was a serial violator. He was a passive-aggressive, ass-kissing little weasel.

The council told Vina he was getting the ax, let him go find another job first, gave him a good reference and was complicit in floating the bullshit that he was leaving because he had an opportunity to return to his roots up north.

      Pity poor Brentwood!

    5. Fantasy. Pure fantasy. Our poor council was lead by the nose by the evil Vina.

I have my issues with Vina but the idea that Vina is an all powerful svengali isn't one of them. You must be looking for a way to let this council off the hook.

I'm not Vina and if I were, I can't imagine why I would even bother with you people as I am long gone. I guess it's just a lack of imagination on your part that you reflexively return to the old tropes. Pavlov explained this condition many years ago.

  5. Karen also has the right to be able to do her job. We have a number of directors who hid facts from the council and mess with the books. These people need to be shown the door.

    1. The death of the girl
Is sad, of course. Many people who end up on the wrong path eventually turn their life around and become productive members of society. That potential happy ending has been lost.

      However . . .

She was also not "innocent." She made specific conscious decisions that put her in that house with dangerous people. And those dangerous people made specific decisions that likely caused the fire and the death.

Let's not forget, these were bad, violent, drug-addled criminals and gang members. Can we really be surprised that despair, destruction, and death follow them?

If this didn't end the way it did, how long would it have been before one of the neighbors died at the hands of one of these folks? How long before another one of our local kids.git sucked in to the trap of addiction?

So if there is moribund humor and snide commentary here that offends you, remember the big picture here. The death of the girl, while sad, isn't the whole story. This story is also about the end of a dangerous magnet for violent criminals, which is a relief for the community that gets reflected in the comments here.

If you are sad and angry about the death, you might be better served to direct your frustrations at the people and circumstances that directly caused it, not at bystanders who comment here.

I KNOW ONE OF THEM AND IF THEY WERE ADDICTED TO DRUGS THAT DOESNT MEAN THEY WERE INTENDED TO DIE. MAYBE YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN ADDICTED AND I AM NOT SAYING EVEN ANYONE WAS. BUT FOR PEOPLE TO BE CALLING IT KARMA AND LAUGHING IS JUST OBSCENE. JUST CAUSE YOU HAVE A DRUG ADDICTION DOESNT AUTOMATICALLY MAKE YOU A GANG MEMBER OR A HARDENED CRIMINAL IN CASE YOU ALL WERENT AWARE. NO DEATH SHOULD BE CELEBRATED ESPECIALLY ONE AS TRAGIC AS THIS. 4. First of all, the accusation that gang members frequent the house is not a random guess or assumption. It was an observation the sherriffs made while surveiling the house prior to the December bust. It's a fact.

Second, according to 11:05, the dead woman was a mother of three, which leads me to ask the most obvious question: Why was a 23-year-old mother of three having a sleepover in a drug den?

I know this was your friend, and it's a painful question, but it's a fair one that deserves your careful consideration and a serious answer.

As an adoptive parent of two SD County foster kids who were neglected and abused by drug addicted parents, I can tell you that the scars from that experience do not fully heal. Ever.

I'm sure my personal experience distorts my perspective of this story. But I feel a thousand times more sadness for the kids than I do for the mom.

I do know that as a law abiding sober citizen who doesn't drink and drive and doesn't do drugs, it is one less person that might crash into my car while on drugs or tempt my children with the evil of drugs. 19. This type of comment thread is what brings me back to EU again and again. It serves as a stark reminder of how fear and greed make it so easy for people to compartmentalize their lives and find comfort in dehumanization of the less fortunate. Quite often here, people express their frustrations at having to deal with unpleasant distractions from their pursuit of salves for their empty, segregated, and existentially desperate North County existences.

These same people rationalize their advocacy for a society that almost universally fails the mentally ill, and often do so usually while bitching about how their fabled "bootstraps" existence is in peril due to increased property taxes, section 8 housing, and anything that might possibly bring browner, poorer people near them. To me these comments serve as a reminder that I never want to be anything like them. Thanks for that, EU.

7:58: Your lack of compassion is remarkably uncaring and dehumanizing. You get a ten for brevity.

6:55: Nice concern trolling. You really care about those neighbors, eh? I suggest you'd be better served to direct your frustrations at the rich property owners who vote in regressive policies that keep them in high cotton at the expense of the least of our brothers and sisters. Productivity takes many forms, and my guess is that your definition and mine are quite different.

4:58: "Sleepover?" Do you realize how many homeless parents and children there are, even in our little protected conclave of Encinitas? I'll pretend you're telling the truth about being a foster parent, but your concern-trolling seems a bit disingenuous, especially in that context.

7:43, it seems you are the last one to lecture anyone on Karma, as you apparently have never bothered to understand the concept.

9:34 "Darwinism?" Really? Do you know how much help from Lady Luck was necessary to build you little North County cocoon? Luck of birth is more like it, and the efforts of society's "underbelly" that you so fear.

I'm going to go scrub my eyes.

    1. 7:18,

Actually, I didn't say I am a filter parent. I said I was an adoptive parent of two kids who were in foster care. Although you could say we were foster parents, because one of our kids came via the Concurrent Planning program, so technically we were foster until the .26 hearing, and we had to go through the PRIDE program, FBI fingerprinting and background checks, child and infant CPR and first aid certification, and home inspection, just like a foster licensed home. If you still have doubts, Google Google some of this lingo and you'll see I'm not making it up.

I actually agree with you that we could always be doing more to help individuals and families struggling with homelessness and addiction. I don't think we can ever do enough. But even with the limited resources available, people who want help can certainly find it. The FRC in Oceanside even accepts whole families for in-patient treatment and recovery.

There simply is no reason why this mother had to be in that house. Period. She had other options available.

One last point. You seem to lay a heavy burden at the feet of "society," which is an intangible, amorphous concept. In reality, "society" comes down to all of us as individuals. What are you personally doing to help the less fortunate? What are you going to do? Saying it's "society's" problem is a cop out. I encourage you to go TODAY and volunteer at CRASH or FRC, or become a CASA advocate for kids in court. Better yet, sign up for PRIDE classes TODAY and take the first step toward adopting an innocent kid who had no control over their circumstances, and desperately need your help.

Stop waiting for someone else to solve problems; You go solve them.

    2. First sentence, foster not filter. Damn autocorrect.

    3. 9:26, I didn't hear anyone mention "browner" or any other racially related term until you brought it up.

The comments I see are related to fear of the rippling impact of substance abuse that can include increased crime in local neighborhoods where drug houses are found.

While I personally am a clean-living person, I was lucky enough to grow up in a good environment. I disagree with the lack of compassion of some posters, but I also understand that most people are trying to provide a safe environment for their own families, and this drug house must have been a big worry for neighbors.

What is going to happen to the victim's young children?

  24. This really gets to me. The woman who died in this fire is best friend and my sister. She had her flaws. No one can deny that. But i have mine, and you have yours. She didn't live in that house and she wasn't around that house when it was raided in December of 2014. I understand a outsiders point of view. I am a recovering addict so i get it. Just like your kids, my kids come first. Although i may not understand her thought process, it doesn't mean i don't love her any less. No one deserves to burn to death. She had so much to give to the world but she hasn't hit her rock bottom yet. Many of us had tried but she had to hit it on her own. She didn't overdose on drugs, she was killed in a fucking fire.

I've seen her clean. She could have given this world so much. I am not going to put her business about her kids for you strangers to see but she did a lot of wrong things. She did a lot wrong by her kids but she also did a lot right by them as well.

We all do wrong things. Some are not comparable, i understand that. Do you really wish death on them? Are you really happy they are dead? Just the day before she was saying how miserable she was. How she missed her mom and her sister. How she wanted to get clean and get her kids back. That could have been her rock bottom and she would have changed. We wont ever know now. I think everyone deserves that chance though.

    1. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Drugs, and particularly heroin recently, are a plague on the young people of Encinitas.

We've got such a healthy, energetic, and affluent community, but for so many young people, idle hands are the devil's workshop. Those who don't channel their energy into work, academics, or athletic or creative endeavors often find their way to the worst drugs.

    2. Drugs like heroin can bring down anyone who tries it a few times. Substance abuse of all kinds have rippling impacts on innocent people including children and family members. I don't take a morality position against this issue--only a pragmatic one. We need to reflect on the type of environment we encourage in Encinitas.

Council's support of the downtown bar culture only for short term- tax revenue is short-sighted. This environment attracts other problems and provides a good cover for other illegal businesses.

  30. As a nearby resident, I for one am happy that the house burned beyond repair. We look forward to a new home being built with a good family.

The authorities are not lying about the events that have taken place at that house for several years now. A full on SWAT standoff took place several months ago and several arrests have been made at the house since then. It was a nuisance and a danger. It was well known that hard drugs such as heroin and meth were very much part of the mix there.

While it is tragic people died or were injured - it's all about choices. People continually make poor choices failing to understand that consequences follow. People willingly choose to do drugs or associate themselves with shady people. It is tragic that a mother of 3 children chose drugs over them and now they are left without her. Again, choices. I feel sorry for the dog who was the only one that didn't have a choice and suffered a horrible death.

We are a community of hard working families many of which have small children. Of course we are going to be upset that a house catering to violence, gangs and hard drug use is next door to us putting our children at risk

It's interesting to me that people have to bemoan the fact that we live in a "wealthy" "affluent" "rich" area. My family and I have worked extremely hard to get where we are and an inheritance or illegal activity was not part of it. We educated ourselves and worked hard to reach our goals. Why fault us? I'm relatively certain that those who comment on our social standing would would feel the same way if they were in our shoes. Wealth has nothing to do with it.

Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.
