Pedestrian killed by train at Leucadia Boulevard

This afternoon.

  1. Very sad.
Not intending to be disrespectfull but why do the following trains or the next trains to roll ding their bell or slowly, gently blow their horn as they move through the area?
Is it to mourn the deceased or is there another reason?

  2. Man struck, killed by Amtrak train in Encinitas

Wed, Mar 15, 2017, San Diego Union Tribune

A man was fatally struck by an Amtrak train in Encinitas Wednesday, sheriff’s officials said.

The collision occurred at a crossing on Leucadia Boulevard between Vulcan Avenue and North Coast Highway 101 about 2:40 p.m.

Crossing gates were down, and lights and bells had been activated, as the train approached about 90 mph, Lt. Jason King said. The pedestrian reportedly walked around the gates and was struck by the southbound train.

The man, whose age was unknown, died before he could be taken to a hospital, King said. His name was not released.

Other trains were delayed because of the investigation on the tracks, North County Transit District officials said on Twitter.

Above is Encinitas death by train No. 19 since 1990 exclusive of 10-year gap in the record. That’s 19 in 17 years.

    1. Oh great.. you're back with with worthless numbers. Why not go with - since the tracks were laid in 1887, 25 people have been killed by train in what is now Encinitas.
This is 0.1923 people per year.
Clearly, there is not a problem.
      Google it!!! Tool...

    2. Clearly, 8:51, you are an idiot. The record starts in 1990 because that's when publications started archiving their stories for online access.

For reasons I don't know, there's a 10 year gap in the record. There are 17 years of Encinitas train death stories in local and regional publications since 1990.

If you would like to get microfilm of local newspapers or visit their morgues, you can research deaths by train before 1990.

If you don't think there's value in knowing the frequency of deaths by train in Encinitas, you can fuck off.

      Delete
    3. 9:57 there is no value in your numbers - they are arbitrary and incomplete- that is the point.

      Delete
    4. 3:53 No, they are the result of hours of Googling to find news reports of deaths by train in Encinitas since records have been archived online. They are anything but arbitrary. Deaths by train are among several justifications for trenching the tracks. The number must be known.

    5. 8:59 googling is not research. Sorry. Your insistence that it is is only part of your problem.

    1. Hard to imagine anybody would pick a protected grade crossing in mid-afternoon to commit suicide. Sounds more likely the guy thought he could cross before the train reached him. Tragically, he was wrong.

    2. An eyewitness described the incident as intentional. The timing was such as to take a direct hit - he apparently "exploded". 8:06 PM is correct in his assumptions.

    3. I personally know someone who works for the Encinitas Sheriff's Department, the report says it was an intentional suicide. Witness reported that he jumped in front of the oncoming train and explode, his intestines ended up around a pole. He might have been a transient, he had no identification on him.

  5. Just more reasons to trench and cover these railroad tracks we own.

  6. Why is the train even going through this residental area at 90 mph anyway?

that in itself is reckless and bad for the environment. When is someone going to sue NCTD for all the air pollution caused by the excessive train pollution and dust from the excessively overused tracks.

    1. I sued NCTD and Won in Small Claims Court for them not holding and enforcing their No Smoking Ordinance! Mathew Tucker and NCTD are Jokes!

    2. 35MPH should be the max for trains going through this heavily traversed area until the tracks are lowered and covered.

Just like up in San Clemente near the beach where the trains have to slow down because of the hazard they make to the community.

Then again, our citizen owned railway with City Council on the board never seem to care about us anyways...

Time to vote for a council that makes our community safe again!

    4. If you push that line of argument, you'll get chain link fences or block walls. Much faster and cheaper and will keep the trains running full speed.

    5. Pamela, did you win the case? If so, what was the judgment?

  7. I drove by right after it happened. It sucks, I saw a few people looking very distraught that probably witnessed the incident.

  8. Carlsbad working to lower there tracks.

Encinitas stuck doing nothing as usual. A bunch of chatter, "planning", more chatter, more "planning", more chatter....

..... and nothing ever gets done.

How long has the City been talking about improving that intersection and implimenting a quiet zone?

Obviously the 130 DBs horns don't have much effect on whether people see a train or not.

When is Encinitas going to do something?

  10. At some point people have to take responsibility for themselves. Don't do stupid things. If we have to stupid-proof everything, this world will be more ridiculous than it already is.

If there's more to the story, then I apologize...but ignoring safety measures is on the individual.

  12. 2 QUESTIONS:
    1. How much does it cost to underground the tracks?
    2. How does the city pay for it?

    1. 1. A fortune
      2. It doesn't/can't.

Do you think the cash strapped State will shell out? It is too busy putting in such boondoggles as the high speed rail to nowhere. Watch that project be abandoned before completion. The Feds won't pay for local jurisdiction issues - Trump and his minion clowns are stripping the regulation gears in order to line their own special interest pockets. His trillion dollar infrastructure estimate is woefully inadequate to handle all the issues in the USA. And the city can't even keep pace with its pension deficit - that'll divert most money to the pockets of the retired "civil servants". Patch your own potholes.

    5. Carlsbad figured out that the cost of lives lost alone would pay for trenching and covering the tracks there.

That is just one of many reasons why trenching and covering the tracks is the best long term solution for our citizen owned railroad tracks here.

    6. Encinitas staff or City Council can not think freely and about positive change.

They are stuck in the realm of we can't do anything. Right?

Why is it nothing get done, yet the City Manager keeps her job?

When is Karens performance review and is she meeting her goals. what are the goals of the City Manager and meterics that the City Council are weighting Karen?

      Delete
    7. If Gus Vina was unanimously "excellent," surely there are no superlatives strong enough to describe Brust's performance.

      Delete
    8. So sad but true.....

Some City Council members should realize its a reflection on them that nothing is getting done.

The City Manager's Job is to run the City well. City Council's job is to run the City Manager.

If things are not getting done, it the City Managers fault. If City Council does not take action and replace a non/poor performing City Manager then its their fault.

If no action is taken, I no how I will be voting next election.

    9. The manager serves at the council's pleasure. If the council were dissatisfied with the manager's performance, they would direct her to change or be gone.

A previous council was dissatisfied with Vina, privately told him so, he didn't change his ways, so the council canned him by requiring him to find another job and leave.

Brust needs a haircut and better style.

    10. 6:47,

Council sets policy. City manager carries it out. It seems to me there's more of a lack of policy leadership than a lack of city manager execution. Do you have examples of Brust failing to execute on council priorities?

    11. OMG Really EU?

      The list is endless.

Lead City Staff team to devleop half baked (at most) bad for Encinitas housing element update that was squashed by City Voters.
Recommended City Council support crappy Prop T- Encinitas Residents realized the miserable failure and voted it down.

Let Council Priority Coastal Study languish until City Council again demanded it get started. Way to late for the Cardiff rail trail fiasco.

No action to implement quiet zone in Encinitas which has been a CC high priority for at least 10 years.

recommended wasting tax money on a $4 million+ dollar life guard tower.

Has done nothing to recommend corrective action to address the pension liability

Has barely scraped the surface with clearing deadwood from City Hall.

No action to reverse action on the N. Coast Hwy 101 streetscape - plan was approved by City Council in 2010- no date in sight for completion of phase 1. Not even a realistic schedule.

snail speed at bringing a failed plan for Beacons Beach. (I know ol time day dreamer- you like Beacon. Whatever)

Coast plan has been a joke with no real production in 6 months.

City Manager is responsible for staffing competent city staff to actually get things done. Encinitas is known in San Diego County as the City that gets nothing done but waste tax dollars.

Supports the culture to bring in more bars to Encinitas to raise tax revenue. She could have asked staff to evaluate the density of drinking establishments or completed a Evaluation on effect on quality of life and property values of implementing more bars like PB. the case study is done, yet she allows the raping of downtown.

I could go on for hours….. Brust has not delivered on any City Council high priorities of substance in my opinion. She is a do nothing. Kiss ass as much as possible to collect her pension and hold on for as long as she can….. In the meantime, Encinitas sinks towards PB and residents continue to get resentful.

I think its time to face the music. I think its time for City Council to tell Brust its time to find another job. If she's not gone in 4 months, fire her. She is bad for quality of life in Encinitas.

You tell me, what has Brust done while at City Hall?

Other City's have had quiet zones for over 5 years, what is the schedule for Encinitas to complete the quiet zone?

      What projects are going well?

How did the last attempt at the housing element turn out under her leadership?

      Delete
    12. Besides implimenting policy, the City Manager and team are tasked with Recommending good policy to support City Council's vision and objectives. This has been Karen's greatest failure. How is she doing at providing recommendations for good policy and implementation plans to actually get things done?

    14. 9:02,

      Good points.

But the council generally goes along with her recommendations and doesn't push for changes, so I'd say she'll get a positive review.

    15. To be fair to the City Manager, she inherited the destructive strategic plan of Gus Vina. City Council will not abandon Vina's brainwashing. His plan is still shaping the city.

    16. To be fair to the City Manager, she's been in the position for nearly a year and a half and all the policies and projects have gone south. Either step up and represent the City Council's priorities or step out (or be fired).

This town needs to get things done. Its had 15 years of stalling with a stagnant city staff. Time to clear the deadwood, and Brust can not seem to get things moving in the right direction.

Give it 4 months and pull the plug. The cesspool needs draining.

  13. A trench is much cheaper than a tunnel, who wants to ride a train through a five-mile tunnel?, and who wants to create new real estate? We have enough buildings, enough density, enough parkland to maintain and enough people now.

Solana Beach is an excellent model.

    2. No doubt that would be a good solution... but the train tracks in North County are owned by the citizens of San Diego.

I5 is managed by State and Feds.

Getting all 3 entities to work together for an optimal solution such as putting the train tracks along I5 is nearly impossible and just shows how dysfunctional our nation has become.

Furthermore, the tracks moving to I5 should be started up north in Oceanside.

Otherwise trenching and covering these citizen owned tracks in Enicnitas is the next best option.

      Delete
    3. Moving the tracks to the I-5 corridor would be astronomically expensive. Trenching when doubling would be expensive, but the cost is not out of reach. Covering the trench would substantially increase the cost and is not necessary. Go to Solana Beach to take a look.

  15. On the train tracks, you can’t hear the train coming. This 23 year old man was pulled down by the wind force of being too close to the tracks. He might have seen the train coming but thought he had time, or even been distracted. He was a local, and all locals basically use the tracks as a side walk, considering there is no where else to cross around the area for at least 1-1.5 miles. He was going to pick up his paycheck at his job (which was right in front of where he was hit). Even his coworkers were outside the restaurant and witnessed it. One of his coworkers even waved to him before it happened. He had plans to go out that night as well. Tragic accident, not suicide.
