Hundreds of years ago, the countries of Europe took turns building global economic and military empires by ruining their environment, exploiting workers, and putting profits above health, education, art, and human rights.
During the industrial revolution, European workers rose up and challenged the social order. Over time, they liberalized social policies, improved quality of life, education and healthcare while sustaining a moderate pace of economic growth. They transitioned out of the expensive military empire business, and let polluting and dangerous jobs shift to the upstart Yanks who were not yet able to afford the luxuries of a clean environment and higher quality of life.
Today, history repeats, but this time the US is maturing toward the European model, and Asia is the upstart.
It’s true that we can look forward to higher taxes. It’s also true that we can look forward to better healthcare, education, retirement, public transportation, a cleaner environment, and probably a six week summer vacation. We can look forward to workers having a seat at the management table like the workers councils in Germany.
