Rally for the Madonna

Read all about it on Facebook.
Mon Sep 12 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Encinitas City Hall
505 S. Vulcan Avenue
Encinitas, CA

Artist Mark Patterson will be speaking to the Arts Commission as the first step in the process of placing his gift of art to the city in a small park at the northwest corner of the intersection between Encinitas Boulevard and Highway 101. Eventually the city council will be voting on whether to approve the application. The five council members will need to know that the public supports placing the art at the park. However, because the land is officially part of Moonlight State Beach, the application will also need approval in Sacramento. And as I'm sure you know, politicians feel better voting for something that has strong public support. If you can't make it to this meeting, there will be another event when the matter is placed on the City Council agenda. Or you can send an email expressing your opinion to all the council members by using this address: council@cityofencinitas.org More information: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/sep/09/surfing-madonna-proposal-faces-wave-red-tape/

  3. No.
As a practicing Catholic I am opposed to Mr.Patterson hijacking the Virgin of Guadalupe for his environmental agenda. The blessed Virgin is not now or should she ever been used for commercial nor political purposes. Shame on Mr.Patterson.

  4. 12:30 PM Since when is an environmental issue commercial or 'political', unless you're a teabagger or radical born-againer that disavows the global warming or climate change phenonoma? 'Save our oceans' is a theme that should be embraced by everyone, unless they somehow feels that it threatens their agenda on some level. I quess some Catholics like the sterile Virgin that has no overtones of any sort.

  5. I guess Anonymous at 12:30pm has never traveled in Mexico. The image is commonly used in all sorts of situations, including commercial ones. I even saw the Virgin's visage done as a "calavera" (skull) for the Days of the Dead. If done respectfully, and Patterson has done that, most Mexicans don't object. In fact, there is a sense of pride in seeing their national icon.

  6. The suggested corner should be planted with coastal sage scrub and is part of the open space of the coastal sage scrub across the street. Has city planning provided this information to the public? An issue the planning department should have already provided to the Art Commission, the Council, and the public is making exceptions to allow objects to be erected in the coastal sage scrub.

  7. The City underwriters will never allow it to be at that juncture. EVER!

  8. I doubt it will clear the hurtles - too much controversial history now clings to it. City officials would see it as a threat to their supremecy it it appears here, so it is unlikely to be approved.

  9. Patterson needs to learn from his mistakes. Just because he has added a layer of lawyers to his problems doesn't make his problems our problems.

Sorry Charlie, it didn't fly under the tracks and it won't fly next to the park, not on public land.

  11. Sounds like a win at this first stage. But then again, they were going in front of Dody Crawford and not Jerome Stocks.

No mention of the size of the turnout.

  13. I read the NCT article, Mr Patterson appears to enjoy the limelight, and yet is 5 beers short of a 6 pack. No doubt. Why the city continues to waste money on this subject is beyond me. Mr Patterson needs to find PRIVATE property for his art. End of discussion.
