People of Walmart coming to Encinitas

Jon Horn has the story.

I wonder if they'll go for that upscale Walmart model or if we'll get the standard shotguns n' Cheetos version.

  2. I see no benefit for current residents and business owners considering that we will get traffic issues, noise, and now local jobs. People from other areas like Oceanside or San Marcos will drive in to sign up for the part-time positions, and Walmart will have their person there to help them sign up for state programs to fill in for their terrible pay and lack of health benefits.

    Who does it support? The low income residents who they want to place over El Camino Real businesses and the Walton family millionairs. There goes the neighborhood!

  3. Encinitas does not need a walmart there is a target right across the street. Personally I try and shop the smaller local business instead why support corporate greed, instead support your local mom and pop establishments.

  4. To be fair, there's not much the city could have done to stop it. There are no grounds under existing law, and a new anti-Walmart law would have been legally dubious and expensive to defend.

    We never should have turned El Camino into a big box corridor. It's all about the General Plan. If you don't like it, you better be at the next General Plan update meeting.

    Oh, right! They are also millionaires like the Walton family and have to make sure that they are using all of there retail space!

  6. The Home Depot Corporation signed a 20 year lease; the Home Depot Corporation is subleasing to Wal Mart; as long as the 'envelope' interior is not abrogated then neither the City nor Carltas has anything to say about it.

  7. How can it be argued that the "city" has nothing to do with it? Isn't there a big difference between a warehouse showroom of luxury building products and a discount store that sells industrial-sized bags of marshmallo peanuts??

    Why does the Planning Department say that they have to accept everything? It is their job to exercise some standards and professional advice. They can't say that the state is forcing them to let Walmart in like the claim with the high-density housing units!

  8. Not a huge fan, but if you don't like it, don't shop there. If the majority of the public agrees, they'll be gone.

    Walmarts draw traffic from other areas if only to bring in the empoyees from other parts of the county. It is not a simple matter of not shopping there to address the issue. This decision has rippling impacts on other established businesses and residents who will have to deal with traffic issues among others!

  10. Do they have a right to do this or not? What code did the violate? No code violation? What common public resource will be unduly impacted? Do we have or desire balanced playing field rules to address the common public resource issue?

    Be aware that much bigger infrastructure impacts can be built into the general plan update. This one project a minor drop in the bucket.

  11. This is an indirect gift to the city by Ecke III - high density development and traffic gridlock. Now a 3rd world employer. Thanks Ecke III - go count your sheckels...

    Not sure where you expect the draw from. Plenty of walmarts along the 78 corridor, so who's coming? I'm guessing the Ranch won't be!

  15. The Eckes owned the land before the shopping center was built. At one time the flat areas were farmed. It's better to talk about Ecke-Carltas, with Carltas being the investment part of the family empire in a complicated arrangement involving more than Paul Ecke III.

    It is certain that Ecke-Carltas want to maximize income from leases on the their commercial properties. This means holding the tenants to the terms of their leases, including Home Depot. These could be renegotiated, but Carltas-Ecke will never do it unless is profitable to them. Public benefit doesn't enters into it.

  17. While Carltas is formidable; this new General Plan is being railroaded by Staff; the Council was asleep at the wheel.The real question is; Can the City Council take back control of this plan?

  18. The genral plan is supposed to be the public's plan, not the council's plan. If it were the current council majorities plan the public would not be allowed any imput and according to Mayor James Bond the public isn't interested in the plan. He stated at the last council meeting that the general public just wants to watch TV and drink beer.
