An Encinitas Christmas Carol

Many Encinitans felt Scrooged when Paul and Kristin Gaspar and developer David Meyer set up a sham charity, "We Love Encinitas," to send out political mailers supporting the re-election of Jerome Stocks and Mark Muir.

Yesterday's Union-Trib brings some welcome news:
Nonprofit donates to other charities

We Love Encinitas, a nonprofit committed to the education and distribution of positive information about Encinitas, has made contributions to four local charities:

• The Hand to Hand fund through the Coastal Community Foundation, which promotes economic independence and positive change in the lives of women and girls.

• The Community Resource Center, a social services agency dedicated to providing domestic violence services, food programs and emergency/transitional housing assistance to women, children, individuals and families.

• Conner’s Cause for Children, which provides critical financial assistance to families struggling to cover the out-of-pocket costs of caring for a child with a life-threatening illness or injury.

• The Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA.
It was not clear from the news article or from We Love Encinitas' web site how significant the group's contributions were, or whether they amounted to more money than the group spent on the political campaign.

It is also not clear whether this is just another legal and PR ploy to create the appearance of a legitimate charity after being caught red-handed, or whether the Gaspars have seen a ghost and changed their hearts.

But in the holiday spirit, let us hope this is a true Christmas miracle.

  1. Cover up. People like these operate on an agenda, not philanthropic idealism.

  2. She's as untrustworthy as Jerome stocks. Gaspars are bad for Encinitas.

  3. The original blatant political post has been omited. Just a question mark appears where the post once was.
I am sure the webmaster will correct this and post the referenced topic or will they just omit it and hope that the public only sees and rembers the feel good cover ups?
I believe this was completely a politically motivated and conceived campaign ploy that they are covering up after being caught.

  4. I wouldn't call this a news article. It's more like a press release from the Gaspars, who seem to be working furiously to show their non-profit is genuine. It's distressingly lacking in details, as is their website. There has been a flurry of contributions to charitable groups in a very short period of time. But how much money has really be given? It's all very odd and very public. Do they have no modesty for their generosity?

  5. What was wrong was that ALL of Council, at the time, including our now mayor, Teresa Barth, voted to fund the bogus True North Surveys for three years, every time soon before elections. This was OBVIOUSLY to promote incumbents, because everyone knew the survey results would be overwhelmingly positive. People love living in Encinitas, Cardiff, Leucadia, Olivenhain.

People, generally, know little about City Hall or local politics. Finally retired Councilmember Jim Bond ADMITTED he didn't even know where City Hall was when he got "bored with playing golf" in his retirement from AT&T, and decided to "sign up" to be a candidate; he ADMITTED he relied on being "007," James Bond, that name recognition, to win. And it worked, for 5 terms, at least 3 terms too many.

ALL of the public speakers had objected to the Surveys, even Bond said it wasn't a good idea to have them during election years. Council has been so worried about spending about the same amount to put an item up for vote during the general elections, so reluctant to allow the people to vote.

Why hasn't Council looked at the contract with True North TO DISSOLVE IT in 2014 and 2016? That should be put on the agenda. We don't need to get so caught up in bitterness and partisan politics that we forget, this was a unanimous vote, with a forgone conclusion that the results WOULD BE USED for boosting incumbents elections. Then Councilmember Barth was left out of the mailers, which made matters worse; she and Bond should NOT have caved in and voted for the bogus surveys to begin with!

I have to say that Kristin Gaspar was THE ONLY ONE who at least brought up GOOD QUESTIONS with respect to the Hall Property Park's being built, in the process DEFUNDING earmarked funding for OPEN SPACE AND HABITAT ACQUISITION and also funding to deal with Leucadia's chronic flooding. Of course, Jerome Stocks interrupted her, and "laughed off" her concerns, but at LEAST Gaspar had the courage to bring up her opinions and concerns. She stated, and I agree, that a parking garage on the bluffs is NOT a good idea. Lifeguards can use the nearby Mossy Property for parking. We paid nearly $12 million for that, on top of the $24 million we spent for the library, which robbed SDWD of its public works yard, which was rented to the City for less than $1000 per month!

Council has a lot of cleaning up to do. It needs to take a look at these extended contracts, including the one with Peder Norby, and see if they can be dissolved. It also needs to look at its overly cozy relationship with business association non-profits through direct subsidies or indirect subsidies, whereby some are favored at the expense of the neighbors and the general public, when other non-profits must compete, yearly, for limited community grants.

And why the photo of EUSD Superintendent Tim Baird, with his snarky smile, posing behind the IPads? That's a whole other story!

    1. You bring up some very, very, good points, but Gaspar's verbal attacks on Teresa Barth left a bad taste, as I'm sure you'll agree. It was gracious of her to step aside for the Mayor appointment, I will admit. A lot is different now that Stocks and Bond are gone, that's a effin fact.

    2. Haven't we heard all this before, at every council meeting during the public speaker discourse, always the first speaker....When you are a tired old hippie with nothing better to do with your time than drag down other people and organizations....As Maggie says in CaddyShack, Tanks fer noffin"!!

    3. Why the personal attack? You may disagree with some of the opinions expressed, but are any of the facts wrong? If so, please point them out to me.

I agree that the contract with True North should be cancelled. These satisfaction survey don't tell us anything we already don't know. They have been used in the last three election cycles to boost the incumbents. $60,000 for three surveys is a total waste of money.

I would be less generous to Kristin Gaspar in assessing her performance. After reading a script written by Mike Andreen about the railway quiet zone before she got elected, she has gone totally silent on the issue. How are the condo sales doing at Pacific Station?

  6. Lynn why are you posting anonymous, we all know it's you. Why hasn't your candidate Barbara Yost, her boy toy Bob A. and the rest of the Encinitas/Leucadia Neighbors Group publicly support any of your positions. Is it because their really isn't such a group or that their embarrassed to be see with you?

  7. Anon...9:31
I feel sure that Gaspar's comments at Hall funding special meeting were entirely scripted.
I think that most of what comes out of her mouth is scripted.
Remember when she tried to take credit for the quiet rail crossing project that Barth had championed for over a year before Gaspar appeared? She made a big deal that this was her baby. Well she seemed to forget about the passion she once showed on this issue.

  8. Gaspar is a replacement plant for the good ol' boys (Dalager) and never has or never will be anything else. Her "gracious" refusal to take the mayoral [position was purely self-survival - she'd have been hammered and scrutenized on every move she made. Barbie's makeup couldn't withstand that much sweat! Of course she is only a flapping trap, programmed by her handlers. Continue the purge of the insiders group - DUMP GASPAR!

  9. Baird's phoney smile looks painful - this is one uptight jerk. How's the iPod program going - oh, they're gone. Locked in a flimsy cabinet - brilliant security plastic man!

  10. What does he care.... he gets his big fat salary and pension. Its not like it was his money anyway. Baird is like Stocks, Lynn Braun, and Mike Andreen- All bad for Encinitas.

    1. Lumping Lynn Braun with Baird, Stocks, and Andreen only shows that you have not been paying attention to city business over the last ten years. You may not like her verbosity and it may irritate you, but there is a thing called free speech in this country. How is free speech bad for Encinitas?

Do you not know that she single-handedly fought the city on its violation of the Brown Act until Teresa Barth took up the issue and got some changes. And Braun's insistence on 72-hour notice for closed sessions that are really regular meetings is finally beening implemented.

What have you done for Encinitas?

    2. Lynn is so twisted she has teamed with Mike Andreen in the past. Watch who gives Lynn Braun time in her public comments to council on July 18, 2012 agenda on item no. 10. None other than Mike Andreen.... need I say more.

Lynn wastes everyones time with nonsense and garble from Braun's burnt out brain. The things you mentioned were accomplished by other such as Barth and many other logical people.

Braun is just a burnt out drug addict who's pass time is wasting other peoples time with her rants.

what have you done for Encinitas, hot shit?

    4. Yup- Lynn getting time donations from Jerome Stocks Campaign Manager, Mike Andreen. Now you tell me, is Lynn, Jerome, or Mike Good for Encinitas?

    5. Look, no one was available at that particular Council Meeting. So I did get a time donation from Mike Andreen. I don't agree with much of what he writes on his blog. I don't agree with many of his positions.

I did agree with his doing a public info request and getting the results of the City Hall "workshop" survey that was taken that showed almost two thirds of those answering were opposed to roundabouts and lane elimination. I do agree with his taking a survey of Leucadia businesses on the west side of North 101, while he was at the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce, which showed that the majority of businesses also did NOT want roundabouts and lane elimination.

When he made his survey and his public info request results public, Charles Marvin turned against him, IN FORCE, but usually anonymously. He has also been trying to link me with Andreen, because he feels he is so hated. All of this ego/personality stuff is just that. Distraction and appealing to people's baser instincts to gossip and judge someone guilty "by association." Go ahead and call me out by name, you anonymous cowards. You're a bunch of sock puppets who underestimate the intelligence of the public. You are the ones' talking to yourselves.

  11. While Lynn does have some salient moments, her endless rants and her personal grudge against Jerome just got really tiresome last year. Lynn would be taken much more seriously if she would just limit her public comments to once per council session and maybe skip a session or two this year.

    1. Lynn makes some very good points.

It got really tiresome listening to Jerome and Jim Bond last year.

    2. Doubt it. Her points make no common sense. She is the personally that fears any change at all costs. She hates waking up in the morning, because something different might happen. Her favorite movie is, you guessed it, Ground Hogs day. Some people are just wired for pure fear of any change.

Knowing her, she probably is bummed that Jerome is gone. She sure is buddies with Mike Andreen.

  13. No. the post was about the Gaspars joke that is bad for Encinitas. Just like Braun poison is bad for Encinitas. The post is about bad things in encinitas. Specifically how much did the Gaspars donate to these causes. Anything over $1? I DOUBT IT. Manchester is just poofing up his developer supportive Councilmembers including the Gaspars.

  14. 40 minutes in and Lynn has already spoken twice now. Is her last name Braun or Marr?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Her last name is Braun or Marr.... depends on her mood I guess. Either way she wastes everyones time with the same old rants. Ever hear of be CONCISE. We know Lynn doesn't know the meaning of that word nor does she respect anyone else's views or time. She is the ultimate City tick just draining the blood and energy of other Citizens, Staff and Council. Ugggg.

Lets see, she had to speak on every issue didn't she? Oh, and I heard the same old shit from her oh so many times before.

She should introduce herself and Ms. Wastingyourlife.

  16. Ms. Brarr or whatever her name is, just talked Tony Kranz into bringing back the bike shallow for a new discussion and decision. I couldn't believe it! Tony, what the hell are you thinking about??? Bikers better be there or they'll lose their bike lane.
