Crime jumps 23% in Encinitas, 2nd-biggest increase in county

U-T:
“I believe AB 109 is starting to have an effect on our crime,” [San Diego Police Chief Bill] Lansdowne said. He said lower numbers of police officers, because of budget cuts, were also a likely factor.

[...]

Within the county last year, Ramona saw the largest increase in crime — 28 percent — with 546 crimes reported in 2011 and 699 in 2012. Most of the crime was burglary and theft, said Lt. James Bovet, in charge of the town’s sheriff’s station.

Encinitas ranked next with a 23 percent crime increase, followed by Escondido, Solana Beach and Valley Center, each with 22 percent increases.

The biggest jumps in those towns occurred in aggravated assault, residential burglaries and larceny.
The AB 109 that Lansdowne refers to is Jerry Brown's cost-cutting "prisoner realignment" which has led to the release of violent criminals, some of whom have already gone on to murder.

  1. Crime increases 23% in Encinitas, Council agrees with developer to build unwanted Desert Rose houses, no change to unfunded pension liability, Council fights against Voter Right Initiative...

    What's changed?

At least with Jerome Stocks crime was down!

  2. Peder Norby has done his part to run down Downtown Encinitas by inviting in bars to stimulate business. What is the actual COST of increasing the number of establishments serving drinks. That is not way we moved to Encinitas.

Council, remember who put you in office!

  3. It would be great, but probably not possible, if posters were knowledgeable about the issues they post about.
Our new council has nothing to do with crime stats going up, they can not disreguard state law and Norby can't be blamed for restrurant drunks.

    1. I think that there is a lot that Norby can be blamed for. He has brought in the wrong types of businesses.

Just ask people who are unlucky enough to live downtown. It used to be a wonderful place to live, but not any more. Drinkers are bussed up to hit Encintias bars. This is all part of the plan for 'sustainability!'

The City staff want to sustain their wages and their penisions on the backs of Encinitas taxpayers.

  4. "Peder Norby has done his part to run down Downtown Encinitas by inviting in bars to stimulate business."

Silly, didn't you know?? It's called "revitalization" and there's more coming, if Norby and his DEMA groupies have anything to do with it.

  5. Perhaps if all the deputies we hire didn't gather together for hours at a time we could have some deputies actually patrolling our streets. If you see these big coffee clatches call and complain to the major. It ultimately is her responsibility to get what we pay from the Sheriff's Department.

  6. There is no money for police. there is no money for project. all the city money goes to pensions and huge sports park.

  7. Desert Rose Resolution - City planning officials and the city manager want Council to approve the resolution whose title doesn't state the fact that the Council granted the appeal to the developers. This is the resolution title -
    RESOLUTION NO. 2013-15
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ENCINITAS CITY COUNCIL
APPROVING A TENTATIVE MAP AND DESIGN REVIEW PERMIT FOR THE
SUBDIVISION OF THE 7.87-GROSS ACRE SUBJECT PROPERTY INTO 16
RESIDENTIAL LOTS, 1 PRIVATE STREET LOT THROUGH A DENSITY BONUS IN ACCORDANCE WITH CALIFORNIA GOVERNMENT CODE SECTION 65915, FOR THE PROPERTY LOCATED AT 1335 DESERT ROSE WAY
    (CASE NO. 09-200 TMDB/DR/EIA; APN: 264-010-27)

There's nothing in the resolution title that states that the Planning Commission denied the project. No wording that states that the project was appealed and the Council granted the appeal.

  10. Does the city council have any citizen group reviewing crime states, where and what type crimes are taking place and our law enforcements response? If not why not? What is our mayor and city council doing to lower the crime rate?

    4. And how long does it take for Mayor Barth and Gus to put the red light camera issue on the agenda. City Council - stop toasting yourselves - your job performance is an F-.

  11. This year the council unanimously approved a new 5-year contract with the sheriff amid glowing crime statistics. Well, things have taken a turn for the worse and are likely to continue in that direction as the "vibrancy" along 101 "blossoms" and the push for densification, justified by walkability and bikeability, are implemented. All of this new urbanism and smart growth are to generate revenue to deal with the fiscal crisis our city has. Gotta pay for those pensions, road maintenance, and the new sports complex.

If the city takes credit for falling crime rates, it must take blame for rising crime rates.

  12. Councils only ability is to increase pensions and have no money for projects.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The pension was created by previous council. Our council is locked in to these agreements. If there were, don't you think the New Council would fix it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No reason to believe that. Look at what they did to Ed Wagner's request for a pension liability analysis. Half baked without citizen input that glosses over the problem.

    2. The council majority is big union, we'll never see pension reform. Only thing to do is move out of the state.

He is worthless. Do we have to add to the problem and only so that Gus can place more layers between himself and the angry mobs who would will show up at City Hall with torches and pitchforks any day now?

Gus love so praise his staff. Why?

    3. He likes to say that the cabinet set up is more efficient for citizens, but it more efficiently allows for him to cover his ass!

Gus Vina is running the Council and they are so dumb that they just let him. It is them who will be fired first!

    2. This is only partial. Many of the people don't even show up over $100,000 who make that amount because they put the maximum into their retirement. I beleive that El Presedente Vina makes almost $250,000, but it is listed as $220,000 since he puts a lot into his retirement plan. By the way, these are the figures before their raise that they will get in a month or so. These figures are from LAST YEAR!!

    3. Interesting that the title of this thread is about 'crime,' and someone posted the list of city employees who we pay over $100,000.

    4. Diane Langager only has a two year degree. She doesn't have a degree in Planning, yet she is as PRINCIPAL PLANNER I $111,526.51; she, along with Norby have pushed for the streetscam roundabouts, which would cost over $20 Million!

    5. So now we can put names and faces to the network of staff in the city-wide-ass-covering operation!

Most of these people do not deserve what they make. Many don't even have the basic credentials to hold the jobs that they have, yet we are stuck with them. Things have to change!

A reference to some online city document would be helpful.

  16. Where to start with this one. Unfing believable. There is so much dead wood. Shield at $140k a year- OMG - For What? bad decisions. He should be paying the City $140,000 a year for ever for all the harm done from his poor judgement.

Encinitas has a F'd up City Hall. Council better start the cleaning. One they can fire is Gus and they need to do it now.

  18. Fire Captains making $140,000 to $150,000 per year for a part time gig? They only work 3 days a week.

All my fire fighter friends all have other professions like owning car washes and mortgage businesses, real estate. etc......

The City needs to address the ridiculously high costs of the fire department for such an easy job. Really!

    1. Wow...when you've put in a minimum of 56 hours every week (usually more)-which apparently to you is "a part-time gig", very often 24 shifts without much sleep, and you've done the job of any fire fighter and you STILL think it's an "easy job", then I'll give merit to your uneducated, uniformed, ridiculous post

      Delete
  19. The employees that work for the fire dept work 2-3 24 hour shifts a week. That comes out to average of 56 hours a week without overtime pay. I guess you can call that "part-time". I agree that $150k a year is steep for a fire captain but firefighters don't get to come home and see their family at 5pm, they spend it protecting your family and mine. Sometimes they don't come home at all, look at Texas lately. If your willing to step up and do this "easy job" for less money be my guest. It only requires to be physically fit, function well under extreme pressure and spend countless hours mastering the newest emergency medical and fire suppression techniques.
