Ghost train

When a train is approaching, the rails often vibrate, creating a "singing" sound.

But it's different in Encinitas. The rails just south of the Swami's parking lot sing throughout the day, even when there are no trains for miles in either direction. Anybody know why?

  5. What could Fred have said that was so offensive? Although I have been opposed to some of his positions regarding the planned stupid roundabouts on our 101, for the most part, he has always been a reasonable antagonist that has been an overall positive influence for our community. Maybe he just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Whatever.

Fred, I hope you are having a good summer with the lower speed limits encouraging some shoppers to pull over and have a look. Parking, as always, is unresolved, and the streetscam plan does nothing to resolve this, unless those few added of the 19 or 20 spaces are near your location. For twenty million bucks, 20 parking spaces is inconsequential to the issue of encouraging more shoppers to stop and have a look.

The 35mph speed is ignored so often one has to wonder why our sheriffs continue to ignore this easy source of revenue. Easy pickings has been their motto that one has to question whether some influence has diverted their attention like our 'vibrant' downtown has continued to get away with. Hmmmmmmmm?

    1. 10:36, it's worse than you posted:

The latest version of the ever-changing Leucadia Streetscape plan adds only 12 new parking spaces in the 2.5 miles between La Costa Ave. and Encinitas Blvd.

    2. They were out last week giving tickets in front of the Pannikin. There are so many restaurants now, the question of parking is pretty moot. You pretty much have to park over by the tracks...

    3. Thanks for the overall positive influence kudo, 10:36. Sorry for muckin' up the thread with deletions, but my "smart phone" posted the same thing 3 times with one click. What have I learned today? Don't leave comments from my phone. What was my comment? Just that the singing from Swami's portion of rail may have something to do with the quarter mile long sections welded together, instead of the smaller portions of yesteryear with their clickity clack as each car rolled over the seams. My guess. Maybe the bend in the tracks there also makes it resonate? I've never been there when it happens. But we can't rule out the hollow sound of crystal liquor vessels. Said sumthin' like that. But don't get me started on roundabouts.

    4. The demand for parking along 101 in Leucadia exceeds the supply of spaces. The only place to adequately increase the supply is between the tracks and the highway. That's been demonstrated wherever there's a popular place on the west side.

  6. I don't know for sure, but I do know that metal rails will expand and contract with temperature.

What you may be hearing is the rails pushing against the spikes that hold them to the ties as they expand in sunlight, or contract as marine layer rolls in.

    1. I do know that this is the reason the trams Alaska oil pipeline avoids long straight runs. They heat the crude oil so it will flow better. The temperature difference between cold Alaska air and hot oil causes each segment of pipe to grow longer and shorter. Without curves that act like a spring, the metal of the pipe would telescope and break.

  7. Ah Encinitas Sunday evening.

Sound like a dragstrip with no cops in sight given any of the illegal straighpipes tickets. Our sherrifs need some real direction from the City Manager. This is unsafe and ridiculous.

  9. I have some unsettling news for some people here. Walking through downtown Sunday night it was mellow and everyone was having a good time. Half of the parking spaces were empty at 10pm. The occasional music coming out from various bars wasn't too loud. I'm glad I live here.

  10. 10:18am. Thanks for the tip. Now that is the kind of vibrancy that would get me to go back down there and actually enjoy our downtown for a change.
