Late-night drunk couple falls off cliff between D and E Streets

Times of San Diego:
Two people were injured when they fell off a 30-foot cliff just south of Moonlight Beach in Encinitas today. The Encinitas Fire Department said a man and a woman in their late 20s fell onto the sand between D and E Streets at about 2 a.m.

The man suffered moderate injuries while the woman sustained minor ones. Both were taken a local hospital. There were indications that alcohol was involved, according to the fire department.

  1. The very strange thing about this topple is there's no way to get to the cliff edge between D & E streets unless they were in somebody's backyard.

The cliff edge is accessible to the public at D and E streets but not between them.

  2. ^^ Above poster is correct. I wonder if they were near or at the open space at F Street where the two new homes are being built. Interestingly I've always checked the surf there and several months ago I was puzzled that the contractor doing the work on those homes had fenced off the open space and was using it for construction storage and use purposes. A few weeks later the entire job was shut down and the fence was gone. I thought maybe the contractor may have done something that he was never given permission to do. Ever since the abandoned apartment building was there I have seen kids creedling around there and always thought to myself it was a bad idea. Anyway, sorry to kinda go off topic here but I would be curious 1) if that was the location and 2) if the contractor was shut down for the reason I mentioned above.

    Cheers

    1. Construction on the two huge, lot-filling houses being built where the Sandpiper Apartments used to be has been suspended?

  3. What happened to Encinitas as a family-friendly community instead of a pilgrimage for the inebriated? Some of us like to take our kids to the beach, and this kind of stuff is not a good example.

    1. 5:21 I do hope that your kids are tucked in and sleeping at 2 am and not at the beach at that hour.

    2. This stuff happens day and night. We see drunk people staggering into the road, falling down in the street and even getting sick in public during day light hours.

    3. There was a young woman passed out at the D St. overlook late at night. We drove by twice and she was sprawled out cold, with her legs hanging over the curb and hadn't moved a muscle. We called the Sheriff, as this was not a safe situation for her. They responded, as did Paramedics and took her to a safer location.
      Undoubtedly stewed to the gills.

    4. 7:48- You know what bothers me about your post? Why not call 911? How do you know she was drunk? Why do you all presume these people are always drunk, instead of possibly having some medical condition? I realize we have a problem with drunk and disorderly conduct downtown, but we might also want to consider that some people are really sick. And, if we wait for the sheriff, they could die. In the future, if you and others wouldn't mind, call the paramedics. And, if they determine the person is drunk, or whatever, they can call the sheriff and fill out a report. If the Council won't step up to the plate, nor the Code Enforcement officer, then as citizens don't we have the obligation to at least make sure people don't die in our streets? Just my 2 cents for what that's worth.

    5. No, 5:21, you assumption is incorrect that a whole city exists to serve you and your children. While families enjoy the community, it also serves people without children who can choose to drink and fall down a cliff if they want to.

    6. Well done, 1:46!

      I thought I was libertarian!

    7. 7:55 AM Sort of a ludicrous assumption that 911 is the more appropriate action to take. Call 911 - the Sheriffs respond. Call the Sheriff - the Sheriff responds. Given her age, the assumption of alcohol intoxication was logical. The urgency of the situation was stressed to the Sheriff's dispatcher, so the reponse time was identical to any other emergency provider. Thye only inapproapriate thing would have been to totally ignore her plight.

    8. 1:46, I don't think that the whole world revolves around me and my children, and I have nothing against people having a drink or two or wine with dinner. I do care when adults get sh..faced drunk and fall off cliffs or get behind the wheel and drive drunk. I feel for anyone who has to deal with the aftermath of drunk drivers, and we all end up paying for extra services to deal with the new bar scene downtown.

    10. 8:03, because you drink lightly, the assumption that 20 or 30 somethings do, is ignorant. As a matter of fact, many of them actually try to get "s...faced" just for the fun of it. We aren't discussing drunk driving, so try not to let other people's drinking bother you much. Especially people who have a different lifestyle.

    11. People can pursue any lifestyle they want as long as they don't cross the line and ruin others' lifestyle based on peace. If they want to be publically obnoxious, let them go far away from other people who have to suffer for the choices that drunk people make.

12:51 sounds like someone with a dog in this fight who is making money off of the s...faced drunks.

    12. 1:07, might sound like it to you, but you are totally off. I was just 20 something once and can't stand it when people act like they never were and get high and mighty.

  4. These kind of events have continued in Encinitas for years if not decades, they just weren't covered in the Coast Dispatch, nor did Bewitched's Mrs. Kravitz run her own blog-site like this one. Why did Danny Dalager name every park after a drunk from the VFW? If something bad can happen, it will happen. How has Caroline not fallen off the cliff is the real question?

    1. Of course things like this happen in every beach town, but this is an issue of scope and scale, 7:52.

There are those who make money off of the degraded quality of life of residents who already lived here. Why not do a little honest soul searching and see if that is really the best way to go?

Also, I don't know who you are talking about in the above post, but it is classless to write a name of a resident if you are trying to make fun of someone with a drinking problem. It also doesn't make sense to invite make Encinitas a central gathering spot for drinkers----unless someone is making money off of them at the expense of those who live here!

  5. There are people drinking on the other side of the fence on the lower section of bluff at E St. Numerous broken beer bottles and cans can be seen strewn about and left behind from this popular nocturnal activity. It also looks like the homeless are also sleeping there too.

I noticed this behavior one evening while surfing out in front of E ST. I could see people taking in the sunset while sitting and drinking on the lower bluff out of site from street level.

Real bad form and extremely uncool!

    1. Do the people go down from the street level or up from the beach? Maybe both?

    2. I believe they gain access from the top. You can see a well worn trail from above. It's not possible to get up there from the beach.

  6. This isn't new. Sadly Denver of Boilermaker fell off the cliffs many years ago.

  7. Many others have fallen off the cliff as well. Especially at the Aldrich castle. Several died. No one has addressed the real problem here yet. Gravity.
