Brandenburg opposes Measure T?

From the comments:
Tony Brandenburg says he is voting against T; he says that while he voted as a member of the Planning Commission to place Prop T on the Ballot for November so the voters are empowered to choose, he doesn't believe it does enough to create any affordable housing. He also couldn't understand why there wasn't any ability to make changes to At Home In Encinitas when it came before the Planning Commission in late May?

It looks like Brandenburg is the only candidate for council that is against Prop T out of the 7 council/mayor candidates.

  1. Kranz was against Prop A in 2013 and is for Measure T and Measure A in 2016.

  2. I'm going to take another look at Brandenburg. He does know the law.

  3. Brandenburg did NOTHING to stop this while sitting on the dais as a Planning Commissioner. He did not ask staff tough questions or try to change the plan. If he was against it at the time, he should have voted no and tried to convince another two commissioners to vote no.

    1. So what's your point? He changed his mind about something. That's hardly treason!

    2. He said he was always against it, not that his thinking evolved. But, the more salient point is that he just sat there, and did not ask staff any questions.

  4. The judge may have just taken a step to getting himself elected. It could separate him from the other candidates on an issue that will get enthusiastic support from a significant portion of voters. Otherwise, there will be very little that most voters will be able to distinguish among the group of city council candidates. By publicly not supporting Measure T, he will get a lot of votes he otherwise would not have gotten.

  5. You get a single candidate to agree with the voters about Prop T and you disqualify him too? Maybe he tried to solicit 3 votes for non-approval, maybe he didn't; the main point is at least a single candidate can see that T is wanting. Is electing Kranz and Blakepear who endorse Prop T and are trying to reverse the decision on the Rail Trail location better candidates to vote for?

    2. If Brandenburg is the only candidate against Measure T, he is the only one I will vote for.

    3. He's a retired Superior Court Commissioner, not a judge. He may have been a tribal judge, but that needs to be clear on this ballot statement. He doesn't seem to know the law all that well, from what I've seen.

However, he did vote correctly on the Desert Rose issue, in my opinion. Also, since he was part of the Court, sitting in judgment on small claim cases, and since he is an attorney (or was?), it's encouraging that he is coming out against Prop T. Standing alone does take courage, so I'll reevaluate my previous take on his candidacy.

    4. NIMBYs UNITE! People in this thread don't seem to be concerned with what is best for the city, let alone care about the residents. I hope we as a city can comply with the minimum low income housing requirements without coming across as exclusionary jerks. Remember when RSF toyed with the idea of incorporation? I remember reading a quote from a resident of RSF who was lamenting the minimum housing requirement "Wouldn't our servants' quarters qualify as low income housing?" Let them eat cake?

  6. Remember, Tony and Lisa signed the petition for Prop A and used it to get elected, but once on the council seat, turned against it. They lied, and a whole lot of us were used.

    1. 12:15 PM And Catherine and Tony changed their vote on the Rail Trail and have now made a working group to do what Lisa Shaffer is calling her legacy up on San Elijo: what has that got to do with Brandenburg? Nothing. Or are you saying that no one is qualified? And no one should vote for anybody?

  7. Gotta love the thought purity tests.

So, he's voting no, but supports the right of voters to decide? That sounds so unreasonable.

Wait, was he against it before it was written? Did he set fire to chambers to prevent Planning Commision from deliberating? Has he gone to Sacto to wag his finger and spit in Jerry Brown's face? Has he agreed to chain himself to construction equipment if it passes?

If he answers no to any of these questions, then he fails the thought purity test, and we definitely shouldn't vote for him.

    1. He is a sitting Planning Commissioner. His pro-development votes are on record. His past votes (not just on T) do not make him seem Anti T.

  9. None of the candidates got the definition of "affordable" right. The answer is here:

  11. From Gaspar campaign website:

"I have been a leader of the NoRailTrail movement for more than a year because of my concern for the environment and community character. The Cardiff Rail Trail should be built on Highway 101, if at all, which is respectful of the wishes of hundreds of Cardiff homeowners."

    ". . . if at all. . ."??????

Wasn't the tiny fig leaf argument of NRT for continuing to exist and endorsing Paul Gaspar to assure that the trail gets built on the west side?

  12. There's sound reasoning behind Brandenburg's PC vote and his comments at the Cardiff forum. The city signed a settlement agreement with the BIA that it would pass the HEU, which includes the PC approving it first. Of course, under Prop. A the public gets the final say. The legal requirement of the settlement agreement is satisfied.

It very possible that the Planning Commissioners and the city council members were told by City Attorney Sabine that they had to approve the HEU. Maybe the judge is smarter than some people think and he expressed his true opinion at the forum.

  13. Indeed, both the Planning Commission AND the Council were both told by the Planning Department and the City Attorney that because HCD has given a preliminary quasi-approval of the proposed sites and the terms for upzoning, that since staff had met with HCD when they traveled to Sacramento last Fall; both bodies, Planning Commission and City Council were privately furious backstage as the Staff had designed the process in a way that left no time for alterations or suggestions as the agreement with the BIA required the City to have this measure T on the November 8th ballot, therefore no additions, alterations or changes of ANY kind were allowed. Once again, Staff, the tail wagging the dog, the Council. And who has been present as a throughline since 2009? Mike Strong, that's who.

    1. My view is that Mike Strong is being set up to be the fall guy if Measure T fails. First Jeff Murphy and now Manjeet Ranu have been careful to put Strong front and center and protect themselves.

Ultimately the blame falls on the council for approving the BIA settlement and its timeline. Previous CM Gus Vina and now Karen Brust have influenced and followed the council. There were two council members, Gaspar and Muir, who voted against the settlement in closed session. Yet all five voted to approved the HEU.

Waves to Ride has it right in its final conclusion about this HEU mess. Follow the money. The city has financial obligations in pension and health benefits, Pacific View, street maintenance, and the lifeguard tower, to name a few. The HEU is the excuse to get more revenue.

    2. Nail on head, 6:47. The City Council will sacrifice the very qualities that make Encinitas Encinitas for the sake of maintaining poor management practices and extravagant spending habits.

  14. 6:47 AM, if Strong is being set up, then it is the longest running scape goating in city history; Strong has been the staff point of the sword since Patrick Murphy left in 2010 after Vina caught him in one of his myriad fibs.

    1. Patrick Murphy had retired. Actually it was Jeff Murphy, not to be confused with Patrick Murphy, who led the charge until his inappropriate behavior got him in trouble. Jeff Murphy left for the city of San Diego. This all left Manjeet Ranu in charge.

Anyone who attended council meetings quickly realized that Ranu had faded into the background. He's no fool. He wants to be made permanent planning director.
