Hit and run on bicyclist in Leucadia 101 "sharrows" lane

Del Mar Times:
Authorities are looking for a person who struck a woman with their [sic] car and fled the scene on Aug. 11. in Encinitas.

Deputies from San Diego County Sheriff's Department's North Coastal Station responded to the area of North Coast Highway 101 and Basil Street at 10:07 p.m. in response to reports of a vehicle versus bicyclist collision, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Department.

A preliminary investigation found a 30-year-old woman was riding her bicycle southbound in the designated bicycle "Sharrow" lane when she was hit by a vehicle, authorities said.

The car then fled the scene southbound, and the woman was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with severe head trauma, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The suspect vehicle was described as a 1993 to 2000 Mercedes C series, silver or white in color. Authorities said the car has damage to the front grill.

UPDATE: Cyclist identified as 29-year-old Stephanie Berger, in a medically induced coma.

There can't be that many pre-2001 Mercedes C Series cars registered in the area, can there?

  1. So much for the wisdom of a "sharrow" lane.

    1. Undoubtedly. Mix motor vehicles and bikes in the same lane, the only safety factor being driver/bicyclist caution/consideration??? Brilliant. The only solution is a dedicated bike lane - there is room between the railroad tracks and the road.

  3. Sharrow lanes are fine; crappy drivers are the problem.

    1. Have you noticed that the incidence of "crappy" drivers is going up - at an expotential rate!
Therefore - not a good idea for sharrow lanes.

    2. You have to have a death wish to ride a bicycle in a sharrow lane.

    3. A sharrow lane is no different than any other California roadway. People need to share the road. This isn't a lawsuit against the City since the marking where administered in accordance with FHWA standards.

  4. Was the lady wearing a helmet? It seems particularly dangerous to be riding in a sharrow lane at about 10 at night. I hope she recovers.

Bicyclists are at risk, even during daylight hours, but the risk goes up at night. Going southbound, one is taking a huge risk, on North 101.

Going northbound, bicyclists should only go single file, including in the bicycle lane, except when passing. That's the law, and we see it being ignored, particularly on weekends when bicycle clubs are out out in force.

  5. put in bike lane and make it mandatory that all bikes use it.

  6. This is a sad situation for sure. The sharrow lanes aren't working - in my opinion. Too many variables for accidents and confrontations. Hope she had a helmet and a bike light, etc. 101 at night, on a bike, on N 101 = trouble waiting to happen.

  7. At this point all we really know is that the driver of the car did not stop. So far, that's the only crime that's being alleged. It's just mind boggling that the sentiment here is that the bicyclist is to blame and somehow the city is going to get sued. If a semi hits a car, is it the car's fault because cars and trucks don't mix? If a pedestrian is hit in a crosswalk is it the pedestrians fault since people don't belong on roads? If all participants obey the rules then everyone lives. It's as simple as that.

    1. Your mixed analogies just don't make sense. These lanes mandate that the motorists yield to the more vulnerable bicyclists; maybe in Utopia everything would work flawlessly, but crowding bikes and cars together in one lane is asking for problems. It is physics and human error in combination - it is better to engineer more fool proof solutions (dedicated bike paths), then expect some "obedience to the rules".

    2. PCH is a highway and always will be. The person with the most blood on his hands is that Trustsfarian Brian Grover, whose parents bought him a nice condo a block from the beach in Leucadia. This utopian nut ball is the one that has pushed for these ludicris "shared" roads. Dig into Brian Grover's action and you will pave the way to this tragedy and many more to come. There will always be illegal aliens and drunks driving down PCH who will never stop and this situation will never stop. Lastly anyone who attempts to ride a bike sown a highway a night is risking their lives.

  8. There is an issue here that needs to be resolved. Safe protected bike lanes need to be part of the Coastal Rail Trail. Mixing bikes and motor vehicles on the same strip of asphalt caused this accident.

  9. Sculpin as usual jumping to conclusions.

No sentiments here blaming the cyclist, just folks asking questions, with some saying they would not feel safe on a bicycle in the sharrows.

Agree if all obey the rules, we're mostly ok. The car driver broke the law by taking off.

The cyclist's behavior remains tbd. I've seen too many non-helmeted cyclists running red lights and stop signs to assume in this case the lady was not part of the problem. That judgment is on hold until we know more.

The combo of cellphone-distracted drivers and "rules don't apply to us" cyclists in my opinion can't be anything other than a recipe for disaster.

So now we have a skateboarder riding in the sharrows in the dark? Hm.

  13. 100% driver's fault. Make an example. Life in prison and forfeit all worldly assets to the victim and her family.

This isn't a debate about sharows. It is a cut and dried legal issue, and the driver broke several laws, including leaving the scene.

Go directly to jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.
