A teenager was attacked by a shark and air-lifted to the hospital early Saturday morning, according to Encinitas lifeguards. The boy was lobster diving not far from shore. It was an 11-foot shark, species unknown. Encinitas beaches are closed until Monday morning.
The attack happened at Beacon’s Beach in Encinitas, around 6:55 a.m.
UPDATE: Victim is Keane Hayes, now upgraded out of critical condition.
A shark being a shark.
ReplyDeleteCorrection.
ReplyDeleteBacon’s Beach.
Not funny, really stupid.
DeleteMaybe stupid is the poInt.
DeleteMaybe it’s a satirical retelling of another stupid theory.
Not the time or place.
DeleteNot your call.
DeleteThe lobsters are having an appreciation party for the shark.
ReplyDeleteOn another blog site, a commenter said another skin diver was near the kid, but at a deeper depth, setting up a bait trap for the lobsters. This would have attracted the shark by the scent, thus luring in the predator. And the kid was in a black wet suit, looking like natural prey - a seal. In addition, they were in the water in the early AM of dawn- the sharks feeding hours. Shark doing what sharks do. Divers need to take heed at this incident.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago there was a Ted Talks discussion held in Western Australia that demonstrated without a doubt that wearing a black and white striped suit acts a shark repellent due to the make of a sharks vision receptors.
ReplyDeleteThe example filmed a black wetsuit filled with oozing chum being attacked and torn apart to shreds by several species of sharks common to that area of western Australia.
The next example filmed was of a black and white striped wetsuit filled with the same oozing chum and every species approached with the intent to ravage the suit, but once within a three or four feet distance immediately turned and swam away.
This test was repeated for every species of shark in the area from great whites to bronze whalers to tiger sharks to bull sharks etc.
Being able to resist the urge to feed with all that bait in the water because of the particular color patterns on the suit was unbelievable to see on film, but there it was.
After Brittany Hamilton lost her arm in Hawaii years ago, some surfers started having the same black and white stripes put on the bottom of their boards for just this reason.
This Ted Talks episode will blow your mind. Ocean swimmers, surfers, divers, you owe it to yourselves and your friends to watch this and decide how valid this theory is.
I have not heard that this was ever debunked and proven unreliable.
Everybody be safe out there and pray for a speedy recovery for one of our own.
Where can I buy a Greg Noll wetsuit?
DeleteWhoops, I meant Bethany Hamilton, not Brittany. It is early.
ReplyDeleteOkay, since none of you will ask the obvious question I'll ask it, what gives Giles the right to "close" the beach?? "Marine Safety Captain" Giles can not close the beaches. Go ahead and use them as you see fit.
ReplyDeleteYea, it should be up to the beach goers as to whether they want to go into the ocean. The shark probably was gone long shortly after the attack. Kind of like buyers beware.
DeleteThank you! I noticed the sign yesterday and went right in knowing that we the people own the beach and waves.
DeleteAt your own risk.
Deletethe people own the beach and waves?
DeleteThe kid is OK - he is shown smiling in his hospital bed. Fortunately, he had no arterial tears or damage to any vital organs. But he'll have one hell of a scar!
