San Diego to eliminate parking requirements for developers

Union-Trib:
A proposal to help solve San Diego’s housing crisis by wiping out parking requirements for new condominium and apartment complexes in neighborhoods near mass transit took a key step forward on Wednesday.

The City Council’s Land Use and Housing Committee voted 3-1 in favor of the proposal, and forwarded it to the full nine-member council for final approval on March 4.
But the beach areas don't want this:
“I think this is an idea whose time has not come," said Campbell, noting that nearly 94 percent of San Diego adults own a car. "The removal of parking requirements seems to me to be one of the last steps we should take to get away from car-centric transit, instead of one of the first steps."

Campbell, whose district includes the city’s beach communities, said the neighborhoods she represents are already experiencing a parking crisis even without the proposed reduction in requirements.

"In my district, there are no parking spaces left on streets in the evenings or on weekends," Campbell said. "Putting in zero parking, while adding residential density without infrastructure for mass transit being already present, will lead to chaos in neighborhoods."

  1. Build condos and apartments without parking accommodations? That is an absolutely absurd idea! The proximity of mass transit solves nothing, as it is nowhere as flexible as the individual car, and only is used by a fraction of the commuting public. This would result in parking chaos in the surrounding neighborhoods and make life miserable for everyone. All this accomplishes is allowing the developer to maximize density. I guess it is now apparent who owns the politicians.

  2. Put in sufficient public transit first, then talk about reducing parking. This is a developer bought-and-paid-for scheme.

    1. Perhaps you aren’t following today’s news.

The GOP has elected a president who has repeatedly lied about his connections and financial dealings with Russia, and continues to hide his foreign financial entanglements. Several of his campaign and administration staff have been indicted or convicted of lying about their contacts with Russia. The President has had all translator notes from meetings with Putin destroyed, in violation of public records laws.

Trump used “our friend David” at AMI to launder illegal campaign contributions. AMI, a financially struggling print tabloid mysteriously published a glossy magazine in December promoting tourism and investment in Saudi Arabia. An American green card holder and journalist at the Bezos-owned WaPo was murdered under the orders of the Saudi crown prince according to the US Intel community. The Trump admin has ignored the Intel assessments, and is required by Congress to issue findings today on the murder. A major rug sweep operation is expected, with loyalty to Saudi Arabia put above the US Intel community.

Meanwhile, the Trump and Saudi-linked AMI attempted to blackmail and extort Bezos to stop exploring the links between Trump, AMI, and the Saudis, and motives for covering up the murder of a journalist who should be protected under the 1st Amendment.

Now, which side is America-hating again?

    2. And yet the left has proven nothing, Muller has proven nothing against President Trump. You listen to way too much CNN and MSNBC. Where is the proof? You write all of this nonsense but it's garbage. Next, when Muller states the President is clear, people like you will state he was paid off. The left is the enemy within the United States.
The left, always a crisis, never happy. Watch the eyes of a leftist....they can never focus. An unhappy lot of fools with nothing better to do in life than to be unhappy.

  4. 5:45 pm is spot on.

Its time for the City of Encinitas to start charging for on-street parking. Non residents should pay their fair-share for the infrastructure and municipal services

    1. Yeah, that's it - "take back our streets," says the mayor! We depend on tourists for our revenue so yeah, brilliant idea 7:05. Piss off the folks on whom we depend for much of our income.

Charging for parking was Lisa "I know what's best" Shaffer. You sound just like the fool.

    2. Ha ha 11:54, you think our town depends on tourism? How do you think this will affect our swampland selling industry?

    3. 11:54- Ahh haaa haaa. Spoken like a true non resident business owner that doesn't have ample parking to support their business.

The fact is property tax is 70% of the City's revenue and your business sales tax contributes peanuts. So you are clearly the fool.

Adding more revenue from more parking fees is a good idea for us residents. Us citizens end up paying for all the police services and infrastructure.

  5. What if people don't buy or rent the condos and apartments because they don't provide parking?

  6. The downtown area is already an example of over building and minimizing parking. The new restaurant going in on D St., next to the 7-11. has no parking. The beer joint just a stone's throw away from here has no parking, and the downtown commercial parking is very limited. Part of the housing plan was to stick 60+ units between C St. and 2nd St. - if there is no parking here, it will be absolute gridlock all the time. Anyone who mentions the availability of the train parking lot as the alternative, obviously hasn't tried to find a spot during business hours. Greed now over shadows sensible urban planning and maximum profits drive these insane notions!

    1. C St and 2nd St are perpendicular. How could 60+ units be between them?

    2. Our quaint little town stopped being a quaint little town a long time ago. Go to any other city and other than in a strip mall or shopping center you don't get to park next to the commercial establishment you're frequenting. Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Long Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, San Luis Obsipo, Shell beach - no wait - maybe in Shell Beach - Monterey - Santa Cruz - Del Mar, Solana Beach, etc., etc., etc. Look around - all the congestion/gridlock/whatever that you're all afraid of is already happened - those people are already hear - and your property values show it!! Sensible urban planning is supposed to accommodate growth - not prevent it. As for greed? Well, keep in mind how much obscene profit the greedy developer who built your house made and all the "concerned residents" who didn't want you to buy and move in.

  7. The more we focus on no growth, the less ruined it becomes. Thats the way it works. Look at Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, Coronado, Solana Beach, Pebble Beach..... Ya don't see them jumping up and down to build section 8 high density units do ya?

Next election, I will be voting for the biggest Responsible/no Growth Candidate that runs.

I hate Huntington Beach and all people trying to make Encinitas be like Huntington Beach.
