This is a bike town

  3. Wow. this is really bad! I agree with all the above comments.

    Encinitas is clearly not a bike town. What it is - is a poorly run City will failed leadership.

    Two women are maimed for life and many other run down on bikes along a stretch of road that had a streetscape plan approved over 10 years ago. The condition of the roadway remains the same as it did 20 years ago. 50 mph plus highway speeds and no bike lanes.

    The leadership is a sad joke . Even after the tens of million dollars in forthcoming claims against the current carnage, the total is not done yet. Considering there is still no change to the unsafe road conditions, odds are there will likely be another life will be destroyed ( and millions more paid out buy the tax payers to settle the massive claims) by the City Council inability to get anything done.

    Putting a sign up doesn't do or mean shit, except piss off drivers even more towards bicyclists (which I don't think anyone wants). Actions always speak louder than words.

    Encinitas is a beach town and will be more accommodating to bicyclists as its streets and its citizens change with time. What a terrible sign. Heads should role, but someone has likely been told by the Mayor, "What an excellent sign. Keep up the good work!"

  5. Not sure if people realize this, but some of those cyclists you see out on the 101 are the best in the world.

    Olympic cyclists, pro triathletes, and Tour De France riders all regularly come here to train in great weather with access to winding canyon roads and climbs on Mt. Palomar and Laguna to the east.

    Nytro on the 101 has highly skilled techs who tweak the ergonomics of rider position to increase power output and reduce aero drag.

    Just down the road at Lindbergh field is the only privately owned low speed wind tunnel in the United States, and one of only a few in the world. In modern cycling, aerodynamic testing is required to be competitive.

    The next time you get annoyed by a rider who delays your fat ass by five seconds going to grocery store, consider that it’s likely someone’s daughter, father, spouse or daddy. And it’s possibly someone who has worked their entire life to earn a position as an elite athlete—out doing their job.

    1. Oh, whatever. If they're so elite and out to train they shouldn't be on roads that have stop lights and signs too often for them to get up to top speed. That's assuming they're obeying the rules of the road, of course.

      Fact is the mayor is spinning out of control. She does her cyclist friends no favors with her overreactions and knee-jerk pronouncements. And she's making no friends among her beloved "professional staff" by whiplashing them all over the place with her directives.

      Pitting residents against one another is no way to lead and certainly isn't going to make the roads safer for cyclists.

  6. All interesting points and I agree. It still doesn't change the fact that the sign is very damaging and not helpful.

    Encinitas is a Beach Townn and will only be a bike town when infrastructure and public attitude change. Until then, please give bicyclists their deserved and lawful space.

  11. The Big Idea behind the push for bikes is to reduce GHG. It's within the city's Climate Action Plan. It's supposed to be about bikes replacing cars for transportation. That hasn't happened and won't happen. All the hoopla that keeps circulating is about bikes for recreation. That's off the mark.

  12. Just today I was waiting in a 2 lane right turn lane noticing a lancer clown going quite fast and not appearing to want to stop at the red light. I turned after all the oncoming cars passed and the guy inside me did too and almost killed the lancer due to him not even coming to a complete stop. If the other driver did in fact hit the lancer after the other driver stopped and the lancer did not. I'm 112% (extra AOC) certain that the left wing police state that runs things around here would have most certainly held court in the street and convicted the innocent driver on the spot. The only question is would the jurors have been fat with chips on their shoulders? It's a fun and wonderful bikeeeeeeee town!!!!

  14. What is sorry, is our reps kowtowing to a very small vocal and out of town riders.

    Using a mishap to promote an agenda that serves a single digit percentage of road users while greatly impacting the driving population is nothing but a feel good shallow response.

    Using the railroad right of way for biking should make sense. The cyclists will ride wherever they want, and that is on the 101.

    The stupid bike trail on San Elijo and Vulcan will not be used by the majority of cyclists.

    Meanwhile, the loss of parking on a great and popular ocean overlook is curtailed.

  15. There is a tiny minority of business owners on the 101 driving the Streetscape hard. They actually believe their business will increase because people in gridlock will suddenly be in the mood to stop and shop.

    Funny, they didn't teach that in Marketing 101.

    1. What's funny is there are many, many shopping districts that have a scarcity of parking, and they always seem packed! Scarcity of parking doesn't seem to be an issue if the shopping district is worth it. Cedros comes to mind, as does Del Mar. Uber and Lyft go a long way to alleviate some of the parking pressures. It may seem counter intuitive today, but Streetscape will result in a much better shopping district in the future. Marketing 101 has come a long way since the 50's.

    2. The big difference with Streetscape that you're not getting is the word "gridlock." Cedros and downtown Del Mar are not gridlocked.

      The 101 through Leucadia will be gridlocked. Kranz has admitted this and relies on people "learning" to take the 5. When Blakespear proposed a temporary lane reduction, Kranz visibly panicked and objected strongly. He knows the mess one lane will bring. He has his own reasons for wanting $treetscape to go through.

      This is nonsense on a level that shouldn't even warrant discussion.

    3. Well that's what time will tell. I agree it will be gridlock, but for how long? One thing is for sure, doing nothing will result in more gridlock, and putting in more lanes is out of the question so how much worse could it get in 1, 3, 5 and 10 years?

  16. Have you driven Leucadia Blvd lately? The green lane has been augmented with green and white cones about 2 to 2.5 feet tall. This isn't spandex territory and on my morning and evening drives I do see actual real people laden with backpack/briefcase riding bikes to and from (I presume) work! Albeit there are only a handful but I have to assume these are bonafide, dyed in the wool, honest to god residents. Wow!!

    1. There’s a thread on Nextdoor full of people losing their fucking minds over this because they feel entitled to drive cars in the bike lane.

      Probably the same people who complain about a cyclist doing a rolling stop (which they also do in their car).

      I have zero problem with the green bollards, because I don’t drive in the bike lane.

  17. Its a good idea to improve the streets all users.

    This green plastic bollard idea is short sighted in my opinion...... it will be a maintenance nightmare. Lets watch what the plastic bollards look like over the next month.

    It will take a crew to continually replace them and at what cost?

    2. No accidents have been recorded where the bollards went in. Blakespear's shotgun approach has no rhyme or reason. She's spending our money like it grows on trees.

      Worst of all, she'll boast in her weekly propaganda rag about the great job she's doing making our streets safer.

    4. The staff report on the Leucadia bike lanes also rejected bollards. The hit cyclist was riding with another cyclist down the hill. Any police report on the accident?
      Leucadia Blvd is 45 mph with a steep slope down to El Camino Real. The city is inviting parents and children to ride that dangerous street down to El Camino Real.

      I accept your personal assessment that the risk of riding a bike is too great for you. I don’t accept your attempt to impose your personal risk assessment on others. For those who have a higher risk tolaerance, and want to ride, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to make changes to make the roads safer for them.

      Assuming a risk is a personal decision. Inviting the risk per the city's actions is entirely different. Are there signs up along the Leucadia bike lane that warns of a steep slope/grade ahead? No. The city should be responsible for any accidents that occur.

    7. The properly functioning human organism doesn’t need a sign to detect a downhill slope. Eyes see the slope. Inner ear feels the tilt. Legs feel the decreased effort. Skin feels the increased wind.

      If you crash a bike, and attempt to argue in court that the city is at fault for not marking a downhill grade, then you are worthy of a Darwin Award.

      If making roads safer for cyclists amounts to entrapping people into danger, then it logically follows that we should intentionally make the roads more dangerous for cyclists. Maybe we should add power saw blades that pop up out of the bike lane. Or we could mandate that riders ride in the fast lane. Outlaw helmets, reflectors, and lights.

      According to your logic, this will deter more people from cycling, and reduce injury and death to cyclists.

  18. Howzabout putting speed cushions and bumps where neighborhood speeding is an issue. Hymettus neighbors north of Leucadia Blvd. who call the city get this reaction from staff: "Wait, where is your street located? Can you spell the name of it, I've never heard of it" and "Ohhhh yeah your street is waaaay down the list of priorities."

    Make our streets safe for everyone. Spend the stupid trophy project Streetscape money on a citywide cleanup effort of potholes and speed cushions. Allocate more to law enforcement to ticket drivers and cyclists who blow through stop signs and lights.

Bike town, ya sure. I was down in Lucadia today and guess what.......I didn't see one bike being ridden on the 101 or anywhere else. What is wrong with these elected people. Nice going voters.
