Exodus

Californians leave as foreigners move in.

Within San Diego County and Encinitas, people are heading out to Texas, Arizona, and Nevada, and being replaced by people from LA and OC.

  1. Yes, but it’s not the change most people think.

California is becoming more educated and prosperous as a direct result of immigration in recent years.

75% of California immigrants are legal. Between 2012 and 2016 (the most recent data) 58% of CA immigration came from Asia, as compared to 28% from Latin America. 56% of those Asian immigrants had at least a four year university degree, as compared to 36% of US-born Californians.

Those educated immigrants have played an outsized role in California’s economic success, founding. Google, Space X, EBay, Tesla, and Yahoo! were all founded by first-generation immigrants. Apple was founded by a second-generation immigrant.

California is the engine of innovation and growth in the US economy not in spite of immigration, but because of it.

    1. Good info, 7:38. It supports the reality that high-density upzoning for "affordable housing" is for the monied customer.

    5. Great example of cherry-picking. Cite the enormous success of a handful of exceptional people, then use it to justify opening the flood gates.

    6. I still don't follow you, 2:12. I've got to tell you, your obscure snipes aren't gaining you any points.

We live under a capitalist, supply and demand system. Are you suggesting we turn to a communist-based one? Just trying to understand here.

    7. Actually I didn’t cherry pick. I gave both the general statistical data, and the anecdotal success stories.

    8. I’m not 2:12. but I am 8:05. You need to be more specific than “I don’t understand.”

      What questions do you have?

    9. Sounds like the definition of cherry-picking. Cite a few extremely rare exceptions to the norm, create a warm, fuzzy feeling, use that to make readers feel OK about an otherwise questionable generality.

    13. I'll pick a few cherries from this "unbiased" source:

"about 25% of immigrants in California are undocumented."

"34% of California’s immigrants age 25 and older had NOT completed high school, compared with 8% of US-born California residents."

"Twenty-eight percent of California’s foreign-born residents had attained at least a bachelor’s degree, compared to 36% of US-born residents."

"Foreign-born residents accounted for 72% of state residents without a high school diploma."

    14. "The decline in international immigration has contributed to the slowdown of California’s overall population growth."

      Good!

    15. Thank you for reading 10:28. Both sets of facts are true. Immigration is a complex issue with both pros and cons.

That’s the point I was trying to make.

Without looking at all the facts, the EU post would lead many people to believe the trend in the graph is a negative one.

      The truth is more nuanced.

The real conversation on immigration should be about how we maximize our exposure to the positive effects, and mitigate negatives. Maybe we should start by doubling down on public high school and GED education opportunities.

  2. What most don't understand about Encinitas is, it is becoming like La Jolla in terms of international buyers. If you don't know La Jolla then you have no clue. The money is coming in like it or not. When area homes like Village Park are commanding almost 1 Million dollars with a 7000 ft lot the facts are there.
It just is. Most of the complainers here don't realize how nice Encinitas is. You don't know bad streets until you drive La Jolla with all the wealth it's a mess. Sorry...I got sideways, oops

  3. Go to La Jolla after dark. There are more homeless and crazy people there than San Diego. Three years ago I had to walk 8 blocks to my car parked off Prospect and when I went down a side street, I was followed by a car full of drunk guys, approached several times by creeps who popped out of the bushes and ran to my car in the middle of the street, I was so afraid. La Jolla has turned into an utter shithole.

  6. blakespear is total sellout. I would vote for the Lword over Blakespear at this point.

Blakespear is bad for Encinitas and must go.

  7. Buildspear is owed by the BIA, Shea Homes, etc...

  8. --The Ode to the Developer Whore--

Who wants a nice family oriented quaint beach town anyway?

Pfff - bring on the high density and more bars and lets get this town rockin. Don't you dig--

gridlock roads, super crowded tourist beaches, high condo buildings, Blocked ocean views from public visits, destroyed sunset views, and people..... and I mean more and more crowds of people. It doesn't matter what you saved or what your past, you can afford to buy a beach home in Encinitas. Don't worry about character. Huntington Beach has plenty of character right?

Keep me as your mayor and you will remember a time when all of Encinitas was great.

    1. Remember her sidekicks: PT, yes-women Hinze and Hubbard, and Joe "You'll never hear from me what went on behind closed doors with L7" Mosca.

      Delete
    2. Why can't we make an example out of Joe Mosca and recall him. His district doesn't care for him and it shouldn't take that many signatures?

      Delete

"His district doesn't care for him"

You need to get more sleep. Mosca's district just reelected him a little over 4 months ago. And before you say that they didn't like his opponent either, the quality of opponents is partially a reflection on the incumbent.

      Delete
    4. You mean his district "barely" reelected him. People liked Brandenburg just fine but didn't see enough of him. Had he gotten the word out more visibly Joe would be at home with scads more time available to go through the want ads.

Mosca also had Blakespear to prop him up - same as she did with Hubbard and in past years, Kranz.

What a lame excuse that the district "barely" reelected Mosca. I don't live in the district but if I did I would have voted for Tony who has lived in Olivenhain for decades. To say voters "didn't see enough of him" is a desperate reach.

  9. 20% of the population of San Diego county is baby boomers.
Population will begin to decline over the next 10 years as they stoke out.

  10. What's left out of this discussion is who is leaving. While the article doesn't say explicitly the inference is many of them are the young:

"The number of people leaving the state is 3x what it was just 4+ years ago!

"But the state population is still growing….naturally. Over the last eight years, there have been almost 2 million more births than deaths!

"With baby boomers living longer, the birth/death balance should level out eventually, but all those young people need to live somewhere – and only the affluent will be able to purchase a home."

  11. Encinitas has turned into a stuffy retirement community with a sprinkling of homeless to ruin the situation. Rich old boomers with a get off my lawn mentality (while hiring illegals living in Vista to do their housekeeping). Before they all die they will attempt to name everything in their own honor. I'm enjoying watching the trainwreck in progress.
