ReplyDeleteThe Coast Highway is a dangerous place for bicycles. Now, with the popularity of electric bikes, it has become worse! I see kids/young adults blasting thru stop signs on city streets all the time. It is really insane around Moonlight Beach, as traffic laws seem to have no validity to drivers or bicyclists.

ReplyDeleteI suspect most of these crashes are one of two things. One is trying to weave through gaps in the curbs at speed. The other is trying to pass a slower cyclist or walker who doesn’t hold a straight line on the right side. You watch people as you approach from behind. If they are weaving all over the place, you slow down and give a yell. If they appear to hold a line and there’s room, you keep speed up and blast by. But sometimes they appear to be holding a line, and then move at the last second after you’re already committed and have nowhere to go.
ReplyDeleteThe first problem is just dumb and 100% on the rider.
The second problem is harder to solve. People who don’t hold a line for those coming up from behind are a hazard, but their behavior isn’t going to change. Riders looking to pass at speed also isn’t going to change. Take away the curbs and you’ll have riders bailing out into traffic, which isn’t great either.
Accidents then are inevitable.

I've seen people from out of town drive at speed thru the bike lane almost taking people lives. This is without understanding it's not part of the road.

DeleteSometimes when you yell out “On your left” to let someone know you are about to pass, it startles them. They can turn to look, which causes them to swerve right into your path. So, when you are coming up behind, you have to judge whether they are holding a straight line with enough room to pass. If so, sometimes it’s better not to say anything and try to blast on by. If they do startle and swerve, it will be after you’ve already cleared them.
But not yelling a warning can also be bad for obvious reasons.
Newbies on beach cruisers are not even aware that they should try to hold a straight line and leave enough room to pass.
