DUI fatality at La Costa Blvd and Piraeus

NBC 7:
Carlsbad police arrested a 33-year-old man Saturday in connection with a two-vehicle collision that killed the other driver.

At 5:20 a.m. Saturday, officers were sent to the intersection of La Costa Avenue and Piraeus Street in response a traffic collision, the Carlsbad Police Department stated in a news release.

Police said that a Subaru crossover collided with a Nissan pickup truck. "The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan was transported from the scene and later pronounced deceased at a local hospital."

Police arrested the Subaru driver, 33-year-old Philip Webb of Oceanside, on suspicion of driving under the influence, "causing injury or death and vehicular manslaughter," officials said.

All while our children get rundown on city streets.

Pot, shops, and bars and more alcohol flowing. Heck, yeah. City Hall green light. Hey Bruce, , I think you better start waking up. You’re not gonna make the next election. 😑

The DUI rate is sky high and seems to be growing.

What the fuck is this city doing?

It seems like everything Shitty Hall does is to promote PB Norte, bar drinking and smoking weed, and could give a shit about kids walking to school and the beach. All I’ve seen is lip service to parents of a dead child and daughters of a dead mother.

As the liquor licenses and the drugs keep flowing heavily in Encinitas. Booze and drug capital of North County.

Kids seem to be lost on this city council’s agenda.

  3. How to get your kids killed in North County, San Diego,CA.

Send them to school in the City of Encinitas on any of the city streets.

The city actively promotes drug use along with endless alcohol and anything to fuck up your mind.

    Kids?

Kids don’t pay the City bills like the alcohol flow does. What about all the death?

Well, all of the police services are busy, mopping up the death mess from all the bars.

Yep, that’s your City Council at work today. Oh, that’s right, they’ve been off for two months now. No worries, people keep dying and kids keeps getting hurt and killed. 😒

All the while the Shitty Hall staff is making poor decisions to pump more and more alcohol and drugs into the community.

I don’t drink alcohol (probably because I was a drunk who fucked up my life), so it should be banned for everyone.

Also, everyone needs to live in a single family detached home, because that’s what I do. Any attempt to live in or build a condo is an attack on me personally.

I drive a car. Any attempt to ride a bike in a bike lane is an attack on me personally.

Electric cars are an attack on my way of life.

Joe Rogan is the most accurate and reliable source of scientific information, so all vaccines should be banned for everyone.

We need to force people to eat meat and ban vegetarian entrees because everyone must live like me.

I don’t golf, so we need to get rid of the golf course.

The world would be a much better place if everyone just lived like me.

Neighbors and friends of the family have called for urgent safety improvements, vigorous enforcement and visible traffic changes to protect other children and residents; and also suggested adding a traffic signal at Turner Avenue, noting that traffic often speeds downhill toward Village Square Drive.

  26. The Chalekians search for meaning has lead them to the city of Encinitas' Mobility & Traffic Safety Commission (MTSC) meetings since their daughter’s death.

“Safety is not a privilege. It’s a right. Please perform some actions for the rest of this community and my 9-year-old son,“ John Chalekian said.

MTSC held a joint meeting with the city council to seek approval to pursue researching a 10-point plan to address safety concerns on Encinitas streets.

“We need to focus on something positive, making a change, and that’s why we turn to city council. We have to make a change," Bridget Chalekian said.

As the Chalekians have discovered, change does not come easy or quickly.

“We’re getting trapped up on the mechanism to change behavior, rather than committing to changing behavior. Other councilmembers say we can’t change behavior. I disagree with that, frankly," John Chalekian said.

The meeting, which was scheduled for an hour, ran over 90 minutes. Community members joined the family’s fight. More than 15 people came to speak on Emery’s behalf. Some even wore T-shirts.

Solutions are still being weighed, but there is no question that Emery’s death is weighing heavy on the Encinitas community.

MTSC is looking into, among other things, automated enforcement, including a pilot program that uses cameras to track and ticket speeders, much like a red-light camera.

There's probably two ways to make that light safer, one would be to add a light to the East of that intersection, which I think was suggested, the other would be to put in traffic calming in the way of speed bumps or traffic islands that you see on some 2ndary streets before that light heading west.

Personally, I would never cross the street there. Way too much going on.

The issue of traffic deaths is not going to go away, especially with more ebikes, e scooters and illegal electric motorcycles. The technology has gotten away from us, now we have to catch up.

  30. Sequence of Events:

The SUV, a Nissan Xterra, was traveling westbound on Encinitas Boulevard and became involved in a collision with a southbound Ford Fusion at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive.

After this initial impact, the force of the collision caused the SUV to veer off its intended path and enter the crosswalk area.

Emery Chalekian, who was walking in the crosswalk at the time and reportedly following pedestrian signals, was struck by the SUV as it careened into the intersection following the crash.

    Contributing Factors:
The SUV’s involvement in a secondary collision (after the initial crash with the Ford Fusion) was the direct cause of Emery being fatally struck.

The accident highlights how vehicles, especially larger ones like SUVs, can become uncontrollable hazards after an initial impact, increasing the risk to nearby pedestrians.

Authorities have not cited drugs or alcohol as factors, and both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

    Key Points:
The fatality was not the result of a single driver’s direct action against a pedestrian, but rather a chain reaction caused by the collision between two vehicles, with the SUV ultimately striking Emery.

The incident underscores the dangers of intersections, especially when vehicles are involved in high-energy collisions that can send them off course into crosswalks. (This is why roundabouts are safer)

    Community Response:
The accident has led to calls for improved road safety measures, including better crosswalk visibility, stricter traffic enforcement, and infrastructure changes to protect pedestrians at busy intersections

    1. There also needs to be education on crossing safety, ie making eye contact with right hand turners before entering the X Walk. Even with a crosswalk, those lines aren't magic and they don't protect you....

  31. Complaints against new council not coming from Chalekians, from Blakespear worshippers:

    Omed Demiri
Not a good look for the city council, and their conduct has apparently deepened the unimaginable anguish this family is already enduring. My response was about the parents statements of being stonewalled by the city and the apparent inaction by the city council.

    Mali Woods Drake Shook
It’s heartbreaking what has happened and it seems like insult to injury because of councils lack of swift response on agendizing urgent traffic safety items. Whether or not there is grounds for a lawsuit, this interview is heartbreaking to hear how the family feels consistently dismissed by the council, and not having urgent items agendized when being told they will be. It’s really unacceptable for this family and those who loved this young girl to have to relive their trauma by going to council meetings and pleading for something to happen, only to be met with lack of action. Will you just blindly defend the MAGA council at all costs

Mali Shook public safety clearly isn’t a priority

Just a few gems from the usuals. It's happening.

    1. Maybe you should check out the website that the Chalekian family, friends, and neighbors created https://www.saferstreetsencinitas.org

  32. I haven't seen a single post trying to blame Ehlers and the 3 stooges for Emery's death. Not a single one. Even the most rabid "Blasksphere peeps" aren't doing it. They're only echoing Emery's parents, calling on the council to do more, well anything really, in response. They're also asking for the council to stop being dicks to the family. It's the usual MAGA clowns bringing up Blakespear of all people, politicizing it and assigning blame, because that's all they do.

    1. Sounds like there was a JimLuke huddle to get on the same page over talking points for the latest "new" city council failure.

This is what the handlers came up with. Blame the parents, family & people that knew her. Then label anyone that says anything other than "new" city council is the dream of all of Encinitas is a Blakespear peep.

How about they just fucked up big time, they are reaping the consequences and humility is a virtue (especially for a group of men with zero experience).

    4. Nice spin, complete bullshit, but nice spin. The losers that residents of both side of the aisle voted out tried to use this the little girls death as a political attack on the current council. That is disgusting but par for the course. Funny thing is that it backfired as many people have pointed out. The last council ushered in the dangerous conditions but the losers want to spin it away from their masters. Mali and Omed are gross and so are sickos liking the use of this girls death as a reason to usher in more people and more traffic. Blakespear sued residents to usher in more traffic. Blakespear invited the lawsuits from bad road design, Blakespear biggest supporters are the same ones trying distract you from yet another death that is a direct result of their own failed policies. Not only is their traffic policy a failure but so was their affordable housing and environmental policies. Encinitas built some of the most homes in the county yet is the 7th most expensive city in the US, way more expensive than nearby cities that built less. Cardiff state beach is polluted from the polluted lagoon. Moonlight is polluted from cottonwood creek which is the victim of toxic runoff from quail gardens drive. These are not progressives or liberals which explains why they work for the maga owner of the failed and illegal pickleball courts. MAli, Omed(wife) and Marco all get money from the developer cartel, that is all that matters and everything they post and do is just to forward the developer agenda in Encinitas. The fake and a manufactured outrage they find every week all leads to one end, more dirty and unaffordable housing at the expense of resident safety and health.

    6. Blackspear is a crazed demon that sold her evil soul to developers. The blood of these children is smeared all over her demonic face. She, and the idiot KK, the ugly wicked witch of the West, and the childless, scissor hum-per are responsible for promoting to the innocent kids another inexperienced parents, to get on bikes on the extremely dangerous Encinitas streets, before any of the safety infrastructure was built and tested. However, all the infrastructure possible will not make this city safe for young kids on their bikes!

  33. Brodee Champlain Kingman died on June 22, 2023 after being struck by a van while riding an electric bike on El Camino Real. His Mom said, “What happened to Brodee and the loss our family is suffering could have been prevented, and we should never allow this to happen again “Brodee should be here now, and he is not because we have failed him. We have to do better for Brodee and prioritize the safety of our bikers.” Two years later, we are still not doing any better. We've had 5 deaths of pedestrians, and cyclist in Encinitas! The f$ing Engineering idiot has not even changed the speed limit while traveling North on ECR, before the SFD intersection where Brodee was killed. They put a lower speed limit sign AFTER the SFD intersection. They cannot even do a simple step like that right, it's no wonder we have so many people being killed on Encinitas roads.πŸ˜”

    1. After Brodee's accident, at least Mayor Kranz called a state of emergency and the city rolled out multiple classes for bike awareness and training. What has this council done in response to Emery's accident?

  34. This is such a devastating tragedy, and my heart goes out to Emery’s family. But it makes me wonder, why aren’t we also talking about bringing back simple, life-saving lessons we all learned in school, like "Stop, Look, and Listen" before crossing the street?

  35. Weird to be asking the city to do these things while also suing them. If the city were to make these changes as requested, it would be admitting guilt which I’m not so sure the city had anything to do with the driver running a red light. The lawsuit also means they cannot comment. So they want the council to do something but because of the lawsuit, they can’t. Sleazy. I hope this poor family is not being manipulated.
