KPRI plays the Toxic a-Ventures

Indie radio is a tough business these days. So tough that you might be tempted to sell out. So tough that indie station KPRI is hosting a concert tomorrow for the "City Ventures" developer building houses on toxic waste.

If you want to pay outrageous prices to raise a family on pesticide-contaminated land on Hymettus, be my guest. But why an indie radio station would support this is beyond me.

  1. I am the co-owner of 102.1 KPRI. It is a common mis-conception that when a radio station runs an ad that we somehow "support" the advertiser. That is not one of the criteria we use. We frequently accept ads for advertisers with sharply opposing points of view. We do not make judgements about which side we" agree with."

So the idea above that we somehow "support" City Ventures because "business is tough" and we have decided to "sell out" may be appealing - but it is not true. We sold them advertising because that is the business we are in.

Many of the entities that advertise on KPRI are involved in some controversy somewhere. It is not our job to investigate and determine who is right or wrong. We hope that every KPRI listener relies on many sources of information and makes wise, informed choices.

Our job is to foster the flow of information, via advertising and other elements heard on the station. If there is an organization that has a factual but controversial point of view different from City Ventures, and they can't afford advertising, they should contact me and we will discuss some free air time to get their message out. This is a public service we provide and it is not a new policy. It is standard operating procedure.
