Subject: Banner Recall
Attention All Banner Artists!
It has come to our attention that the banners we have given you do not comply with the permit we were issued. We are in the process of reprinting them and should have them for you in about 10 days.
If you have completed your banner, you are free to keep it. If you have the energy to paint another we would love to have you do it.
If you have not finished, please do no more. Return it to the DEMA office for a replacement banner.
I sincerely apologize for all the trouble this may have caused you. Unfortunately, I did not do my due diligence in preparing the permit. This not in any way the Artists' Colony's mistake, but mine alone and for that, I am truly sorry.
I do hope you will able to do another banner as soon as we get them. We will alert you when we get have them here.Thank you for your understanding.

Sources tell Encinitas Undercover that what's wrong is that the banners carried an image of late Council Member Maggie Houlihan, who has become politically inconvenient to the council majority.
I hope the artists will put their heart and soul into decorating the original, uncensored banners and hang them with pride in prominent places.
How about a giant Grinch face banner with Kristin Gaspar's contorted mug on it showing her consternation over Barth's "secret" staff consultations! What we have here is a failure to communicate (or unwillingness). Bah humbug, says the Barbie Grinch!
ReplyDeleteIt is appalling that DEMA IS AFRAID of honoring a fallen comrade who gave over 13 years of her life for Encinitas, got the most votes when she ran, served two terms as mayor, because stocks does not want it to happen.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, DEMA has reason to be afraid and that is not right.
Keep politics out of this. This is only honoring a deserving citizen.
The city didn't pay for the banners. Sounds like a 1st amendment lawsuit.
ReplyDeleteThe banners with Maggie's picture still can be displayed on private property, such as in merchants' windows.
ReplyDeleteThe banners are more important that police, fire, and roads.
ReplyDeleteThe artists should ALL include their own portrait of Houlihan on every banner. That screws over several people and organizations: The city, DEMA, Crawford, Stocks. Will the city disapprove of the painted banners AFTER the artists have completed paintings?? Hardly.
ReplyDeleteYou want 101 banners with Maggie's portrait?? This is how you do it.
Problem solved....NEXT!!!!!
It is wrong to let fear of angering a councilman stop citizens from this honoring the passing of someone who gave so much of her life for her community.
ReplyDeleteI would expect that if any of our councilmembers were to die in office, there would be a similar tribute attempted.
And to those that oppose Maggie's image on the Arts Alive Banners, please exercise the honorable jesture and allow the community to honor her in this way, with no acrimony.
W.C.,
ReplyDeleteI hope you will be covering the planting of trees along hwy 101 today in Leucadia. Perhaps you will ask the city what took so long and also ask why the streetscape construction hasn't begun yet. Gee, It's only been 4 years.....
Ps- I know not to get my hopes up, it took the city staff 23 months to plant some trees and that's after been directed by the council to plant those trees "asap". Way to go city staff, nice to know you are on top of your game. Simply the best....
Oh you might want to ask them why that stretch of the 101 is the most UGLY section of 101 throughout north county.
ReplyDeleteI must confess I don't know the history of Streetscape. But I agree the landscaping is way overdue.
ReplyDeleteI suspect a lack of funds (*cough* pensions!) contributed to the delay, but I would welcome a guest post if you have more background.
it is of little surprise that stocks want to twart citizens honoring maggie on the banners. iam sure he was the one that got the permit rejected for maggies celebration of life gathering, when she was with us.
ReplyDeletebad form.
No lack of funds to build a FIRE HOUSE now is there. A $5 million dollar fire house!!! WTF???
ReplyDeletewith regard to the fire house, don't forget the cost of the land that Jerome's friend sold to the city.
ReplyDeleteAnno 6:23
ReplyDeleteIt was the community memorial of maggie at cottonwood that had the permit rejected by the city. (stocks)
