Sheriff's deputy kills suicidal man in Village Park

NBC 7:
A deputy was involved in a shooting in an Encinitas neighborhood Friday morning, officials confirmed.

The shooting was reported just after 9:45 a.m. in the 2000 block of [Shadytree] Lane. Jan Caldwell of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said the deputy was not injured.

[...]

A neighbor told NBC 7 the suspect had been experiencing marital troubles and deputies had been called [to] his house before this incident, including a time when the man was throwing things out of the window. The neighbor said a deputy shot the suspect because he was armed with a shotgun.

The neighbor said the suspect's wife ran out of their home this morning saying her husband had a shotgun and was going to harm himself.
U-T:
TV station KUSI reported that a man said to be suicidal had been shot, and was dead. A news helicopter showed a a yellow tarp over an apparent body behind homes.

The shooting occurred about 9:40 a.m. on Shadytree Lane off Glen Arbor Drive in the Olivenhain community, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said.

Shadytree Lane is a cul-de-sac lined with four-plex townhomes, with trees and some small open spaces behind the backyards.

One resident said she and a girlfriend who was visiting heard two short bursts of gunfire and they looked outside to see a deputy hiding behind a garage, his handgun drawn. They later saw a woman collapse in distress in a yard.

  2. Just went thru there - traffic was confused and the cop supposedly directing it was talking to his buddies. Go get a donut when you take a break on the job.

  3. What a sad story! I wish that someone could have talked to him instead of shooting him.

  6. What happened to crisis mediators? I suppose once a weapon is brandished, it's open season.

  7. Was the man suicidal over the city wasting time and $$$ on naming the SPOCK BLOCK?? I know I'm depressed as my streets potholes grow bigger and BIGGER.

  8. Question: do all police now routinely carry AR-15 assault weapons?

According to the story, the dispatcher did not relay the recent history of this man until they were enroute. Which means the standard squad car now has heavy weapons as standard practice. I'm all for our Sheriffs defending themselves and going home safe to their families, but I'm not sure militarization is necessary.

God help me, I sound a little like Alex Fidel.

  9. I live a few blocks away, so walked over early in the evening. A neighbor who knew him well described his estranged wife as moving back in a few days prior and the conflict was severe. So much so that he told someone that it would end in tragedy.

The dead man was a Health Inspector, I guess that's a county position. So, he must have been functioning O.K. With the ex-wife back, he was drinking heavy, and was so inebriated when the suicide talk began.

I call it suicide by cop.

    1. I suspect the weapon that the dead guy had wasn't even loaded. Maybe the cops should have backed off and called in some experts to defuse the situation. If the guy starts shooting, then there is no choice. Of course, the first couple of rounds determines the winner and loser of such a confrontation.

Booze - drug of the emotions....

  10. We have had too many incidents of this sort in Encinitas. I think that we need more mediators or officers trained to diffuse these issues.

    1. The cop used multiple rounds from an AR-15 rifle - that's a .223 military round. This cop had been on the force less than 5 years - overreaction! Hopefully he gets a desk job for a year and is pulled from the field - he resorted to deadly force too hastily.

  11. Cops love to play army - "To protect and serve" is obsolete. To over react and blow you away is the new motto.

  12. Just goes to show what the affects of drinking has on you. Basically, you lose all sense of reality, become brave and daring, and don't care about yourself or anyone else. This guy, probably was a very nice gentleman as some have expressed. Yes, it is a shame that this had to happen.

    1. Yes.

If you enjoy a glass of wine with your dinner, you will almost certainly end up walking the streets with a shotgun, and be mortally wounded by the police.

    2. 7:31 I hope you are aware of the toxins they have been putting in the wine for years. You will be mortally sick by your own doings. Enjoy that wine.

  13. This situation could have been defused - the cop had an itchy trigger finger.

  14. The cop is probably relieved that no one had a cell phone video of the encounter.
