Out with the old...

From the Inbox:
The continued crapification of everything in Encinitas

http://pacificq.com/

The same folks who ran out the Encinitas Blvd. 7-11 have recently done their magic on Betty's Taco's, the RC car place, Swami's Cafe, a pizza place, and now my favorite place to take the family for an evening of fun, Pacific Q billiards.  The sign on the door said they can't make enough money to stay open.

That means only a tailor, a barbershop, and a beauty supply store remain in the way of the wrecking ball and a future upscale dining experience, presumably made up of national chains and upscale hipstercrap.

Loss of community character is the cost of 21st century capitalism...

Interestingly, while the Ralph's / Trader Joe's parcel immediately behind this property is on the city's map for upzoning to mixed-use 3-story condos, this property is not.

  1. This property owner received Planning Commission approval for a new rebuild orange county style. It will have some clock tower thing in addition to the other glass facades. Progress, thy name is the Planning department.

The times aren't changing, this is always what happens. People "improve" their property either be doing it themselves or selling it to someone who will. When Green Valley was developed in the seventies starting with Village Park the times were a changin' for all the farmers there. Personally, I hate it. One of my favorite restaurants, El Callejon had to close because the owner wouldn't renew the lease. Encinitas is on the radar now so expect more of this. Some good, some bad but things will keep changing.

  3. There are just too many things going wrong here to explain. The new owner came in with some out-of-town money to remake the place. Meanwhile outfits like Amazon are making it tougher for local businesses. Our out-of-control city staff and their unwanted HE are destroying the last bits of community character. I don't know how much longer Garcia's has but I used to like the Country Kitchen that was there before.

    1. Well why didn't you buy the property and then keep all the old businesses there??

  4. If you want a public billiard room, support construction of real affordable housing.

The owners of $2M houses who want to play 8-ball put a pool table in the house.

  5. There is no such thing as "affordable housing". If you want affordable housing, then go to San Bernardino and duck the gunfire. "Affordable" in this area is $750K - segregation by economic status - it has always been that way and won't change. The HEU is just a developers' gift.

    1. Said about as best as I've heard, 1:19.

Let me add: just say "NO" to the housing element update. "Affordable housing" is its false promise to get you to say yes to a big developer payday and more traffic congestion for residents.

  6. The residents need to show the City Council that they can't cater to their special interests cronies without some push back - vote NO on the housing plan (agenda). Incorporation was a mistake - bloated pensions, lack of civic priorities, hack-eyed over-development, double-talk, etc. Maybe being unincorporated isn't so bad after all.

    1. Hack-eyed?

      Not a word.

    2. Maybe a portmanteau word for hackneyed + cock-eyed?
