Three burglars caught after recent string of break-ins

There has been a large number of residential burglaries and car break-ins in Encinitas recently, perhaps as a consequence of Prop 47's catch-and-release rules.  This trio may be responsible for some of the recent crimes.

Patch:
A wanted felon and two other men were arrested Wednesday in Cardiff on suspicion of residential burglary following a search that involved a helicopter and a K-9 team, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The trio came to the attention of authorities at about 9 a.m. when residents near Robley Place reported seeing three men going to door-to-door, asking strange questions, according to San Diego sheriff's Sgt. Ken Lawrence.

  1. Three young black youths in hoodies going door to door? Maybe they were just selling overpriced magazine subscriptions to be donated to our troops overseas and earning 5000 points for their school.

  2. Who said they were black?

  3. The article didn't say anything about the race of the perps.

  4. You can look up the arrest records. The ring leader has quite the rap sheet.

  6. A sheriff deputy told me they are black and that one has a long history.

  7. Does anyone even care how racist the above comments are? So what if they are black? If they had been white would this be such a big deal?

    3. The three men were spotted and identified as being black. It's not racist to give the characteristic that would most easily identify them. It's what led to their apprehension. The neighborhood had been plagued by numerous robberies.

    4. Getting so sick of being careful not to offend someone. I agree with 2:57. Any characteristic that is helpful in apprehending a criminal is helpful. Get over it people!

    5. When race is only mentioned in crime stories that involve a minority, it reinforces racist stereotypes.

Ask yourself, would the comments here be as likely to mention race if the perps were white guys, even if that physical description played a role in their capture?

The important thing about the criminals is that they are criminals, not the color of their skin.

Sad that in 2016 we still need to have this conversation.

    6. 4:31 Yes, the comments would be the same if it involved three white guys. The APB would ne state that so the police would know who they are looking for and not wasting time.

People try to make much more out of it and turn it in to a racist thing when not necessary.

  8. The taxpayers should sue the governor and federal judge that ordered the release of these criminals.
The judge for ordering the release and the governor for being a pussy and going along with this idiocy....this is just the beginning of the crime wave that will engulf the USA.

  9. A black guy in his late 20's came to the door selling magazine subscriptions. When I said I wasn't interested, he inferred that I didn't want him to succeed. He started to become belligerent and I wondered where this encounter was going. He left in a huff and I thought of calling the police, but didn't; as nothing happened. He played the race card and had a bad attitude. Who reinforced what in this incident?

    1. 4:46 That same thing happened to me about a year ago. The guy became very obnoxious when I kept saying I wasn't interested. He pulled out the race card and I quickly closed the door.

    2. This is very common in Encinitas, and sad.

These young people are brought here from out of state by racketeers to canvas the neighborhoods and beg money from well-meaning wealthy residents. The organizers take most of the loot and give the kids a pittance.

It happens frequently enough in Encinitas that it might be worth seeing if the city could prohibit it. Usually it comes in waves where a number of these guys blanket whole neighborhoods.

    3. I thought you needed a permit to go door to door in Encinitas if you were trying to sell something. Does anyone know for sure?

      Delete
    4. Yes, door to door sales persons do need a permit. One should be requested, if you answer your door. I see young people going onto private property, to side gates, etc., while I'm riding my bike; I think they're trying to sell magazine subscriptions.

Sadly, the best deterrent is probably to have latched gates and no trespassing signs on them. But do ask for ID, and the person's permit to solicit door to door, if you are approached at your home.

    5. The kids are the victims in that scenario. They bring them in for out of state. Blame the guys bringing them in, not the kids.

  10. Dear Lord; Please help the people in this community who would vehemently say they are not racist, but really are. So many of these posts are so offensive. "Playing the race card?" OMG. Really? Do you have any knowledge of the African American community. And, we don't see too many of them in Encinitas. Do you know these people's history? Do you know that more African American children and adults are incarcerated each year? And that also accounts for the percentages. Do you know that more African American mothers are raising children by themselves with no help from the men they either divorce, or the men leave? Do you know ANYTHING about the history of the men who were arrested? Perhaps they needed money for food? Maybe they are mentally ill and the system locks up the mentally ill. Maybe they were beaten silly by their parents when they were young. I could go on, bit I doubt if anyone who has already shown their true colors will do anything but trash me. Learn something relevant, and then speak ,is my motto.

Remember Steven Leacock the wrong-way driver? 53 comments. No mention of race. (He's white)

    1. Why not? Your "point" is irrelevant anyway.

    2. As a matter of fact, Leacock is black.

      But thanks for playing.

    3. I stand corrected.

If you search google images for "Leacock Encinitas," near the top is this image:

Leacock is a soccer coach, but that's not him.

Still, news reports and comments are FAR more likely to mention the race of the perp if it aligns with a minority stereotype.

It's not exactly Klan-style racism. Much more subtle than that, but the bias exists, and it's malevolent.

  15. In the story, you have one set of burglars who are black, the other who are white. No mention of priors or drug offenses. The speculation on prop 47 is in the prior Reader article..

    http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2016/may/20/stringers-prop-47-culprit-increase-burglaries/

Bottom line, keep your eyes open, report suspicious activity, especially if you live next to the freeway....All the race baiting and commentary on the legal system is for another discussion.

And for the record, I was no on 47...
