Asian restaurant to replace El Callejón

Press release:
Encinitas restaurateur and chef, Wade Hageman, and his wife Kristi announce plans to open a new Asian-inspired restaurant called Open House Asian Kitchen in Moonlight Plaza at the corner of Encinitas Boulevard and South Coast Highway 101 in early 2017. The Hagemans have estimated they will be hiring about 50 employees for the new neighborhood eatery.

The restaurant brings an innovative twist to Asian style food and will draw inspiration from Thai, Korean, Chinese and Japanese cuisines. The restaurant will feature a craft beer selection, handcrafted cocktails and wines that pair perfectly with Asian-inspired dishes.

  1. No. No. No.

We don't need some white bread gentrified hipster amalgamation of a whole continent on a plate with fruity cocktails.

If they want to do Asian, I seriously wish they'd just go down to Convoy and partner with a real first generation family to make an honest and authentic dim sum joint. It would be wildly popular around here.

    1. Shut up!!! You do not get to decide what fits or doesn't fit in that location?? Why do you care ?? What dog do you have in that fight?? Let them live the life they choose.
You're and idiot. I suppose you'll want to start burning books next ..,

    2. Wow. I guess we really do need yoga in schools.

Relax for a moment, 2:29, and show me exactly where you got the impression that I "get to decide" anything.

I get to have an opinion as a customer, and so do you. As a customer, I wish we had an authentic dim sum joint. I had no idea that position was such a political land mine. I stand by my position, no matter how controversial, or how many punctuation marks you use.

    3. 3:50- you want Dimsum, then go open one yourself!!!! And I'll use at the exclamation marks I want to use!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know who you are, but please please please please run for mayor or city council.

You won't win, but it will be so so fun to watch.

  2. "Asian inspired" is a hard sell outside the trendy hipsters, who will not be faithful clients when trends change. People who like Asian food will go down to Convoy or El Cajon Blvd. and eat very authentic Asian food of very specific regions for one quarter the price. The restaurants there seek to specialize in particular regions. 8:53 is correct. Trendy amalgamations of Asian food is a poor choice. But, gentrified hipsters don't really care about "authentic" - they care about "looks authentic". Oh, and beer pairs better when Asian food than wine or cocktails.

    1. It isn't because El Callejon's food was authentic. I don't care if food is authentic, just that it's good. El Callejon was a great place to dine and get a margarita (no, I didn't drink too many). I'm just pissed that they weren't given a new lease and won't be trying the new restaurant.

  11. Don Barth writing in the Coast news says he'd make a great mayor because " I have the time...". Lolololllll. Hey Don buddy, I don't have the time and I'd still make a better mayor than you. And I thought you were running to have a park and fruit orchard named after yourself....
He then spends the rest of his words ripping current mayor Gaspar and maybe future mayor Gaspar. Hey Don ol' buddy substitute Barth for Gaspar in your article and you'll get the same questions and answers....Here's what I get from your article, you'll be as pathetically bad as your wife. The same can be said for Shaffer 1 and Shaffer 2.

    1. 2:50 GASpar is bought and paid for by the developers. He is backed by the same developers his wife is. Take a look at her campaign contributors and you will be amazed.

They sure have some of you fooled.

      Delete
    2. Neither Barth nor Shaffer are bought and paid for by developers. They just vote like they do. Looks like they have 3:05 hooked.

Running on platforms of transparency, trust, and resident protection, Barth and Shaffer are far worse for turning coat than the very predictable developer shill Gaspar.

    3. 2:50 PM

Pretty impressed with yourself, aren't you. Why don't you run so we can all be impressed? Oh, I remember, you don't have the time. Sure.

      Delete
    4. Plus, 2:50 doesn't live here. The crazed tone gives the writer away as Mikey Andreen, an Oceanside resident. He does the developers', Stocks', and Gaspar's dirty work for them.

The other possibility is Jerome himself, who is often confused with Mikey in tone and content. If Jerome he could of course run, but we all know how that would end.

    5. 3:22- both Barth and Shaffer are/were bought and paid for by govt Union goonsz. Shaffer sat on a committee that raised pay and pensions for city staff. Supported by Barth and Shaffer along with Muir, all govt ticks sucking the wallets of hard working citizens. What's it like to never have to meet a payroll or be accountable to anyone for your failures...only govt ticks can answer that question. Well govt ticks?? Tell us.

    6. 10:03- I thought Stocks was the one who helped promote a 35% pension increase? Am I wrong on this?

      Delete
    7. Dr. Lorri, pay attention. The most recent increase in pay and pensions was negotiated by Shaffer and a fellow crony from the council. Who got screwed?? The Encinitas taxpayer as city staff was rewarded for doing the jobs the do poorly with pay and pension increases....it happened two years ago. Where have you been??

    8. 12:27- Thanks for the update. I have had some health challenges the last couple of years so I am not as on top of things as I would like.

    9. 12:27, be real. The $tock$ 35% increase was so huge, anything else pales in comparison. I was there the night $tock$ bought city workers' allegiance. The place was packed with city hall employees and emptied out immediately after they'd secured their win.

    10. The big increase of 2005 was passed by Stocks, Dallager, Maggie and Christy Guerin. Jim Bond voted no.

  12. How can this not be a stunt? Seriously folks.

As if any of these three husbands could be qualified, after their spouses did such a bang up job themselves.

They must be in same bubble of non, un, ir, ? reality that their underperforming other halves have been imagining themselves in.

To think about our community through any of their eyes and minds, must be quite a thing to pull off.

Now, they are imagining that there are fans out there because of a shared name recognition? Gimme a break. Give us all a break.

Stop the insanity. Save our city. Oops. That one has been taken already. All the power to them for whatever they can come up with to foment a better way forward than what we are currently working under and will be after the election. Same old, same old.

Maybe we can extract some promises that will stick this time at the up coming debates. Worth a try.

    1. how about you do that and see if you can make it.

    2. the last thing we need is more hot rods. If Encinitas cared about the envirnment and healthy lifestyles, and cutting pollution, they would cut the noise pollution by enforcing the existing muffler laws for vehicles. The city manager should direct the sheriff captain to put less time on bikini patrol and start issuing muffler tickets. Its sounds like the fricken indy 500 out there every weekend, especially peacefull Sunday.

    1. The previous restaurant operators were willing to negotiate their rent - they must have been outbid. The limiting factor in that center is the lack of parking and access - doesn't seen like it'd command a premium.

      Delete
    2. The previous owners were a pain in the butt. They didn't pay their rent on time, the place was filthy in the kitchen, they were busted by the ABC for serving minors, approximately 3 times. The owner wanted them out. So did most of the businesses in that center.

  22. Fellow citizens, please make time to pack the hall tonight for our city council meeting.

Save our library from being sold out all just so some deep pockets can try to buy themselves an edifice at the expense of our community's public treasure. Council has no right to do this. They are here for a relatively short period of time, some less than others.

Don't proceed with this terrible precedent setting action. Our town is better than this.

Our council claims we are in fine financial shape, so why would we even consider such an action? Even if this were not true, and there is plenty of evidence some creative use of numbers has been going on, selling naming rights to our shining monuments is reprehensible.

Save our library tonight and help save future public treasures from suffering the same fate.

Council, don't open this door that will not be able to be closed down the road.

The promoters have almost exclusively used a 'canned' response in appealing to council to go forward with this. All they did was add their names and many are not citizens of Encinitas. Anyone can read these public comments received by the city, although it is a but lagging in being kept up to date.

Keep OUR Encinitas Library, the Encinitas Library by giving up a little time and attending council tonight. Deny this action and toss the MOU where it belongs.

    2. Nonsense. All public treasures can and should be sold to the highest bidder. How about the Coors Lite Sand Pavilion? AKA Moonlight beach. The new life guard station should have a 2 story ad for Brazil Reef flip flops, but of course it's a hot chick in a thong bikini bottom, is she wearing flip flops?? City Hall should be known as SEIU plaza, home of over paid, over pensioned layabouts.
All beaches should have naming rights sold on a 2 year contract..

It's about time this city started paying its own way..
