Encinitas band driven out by gentrification

San Diego Reader:
Lo-Fi Nipple was created by Reynolds and Finkbiner for a one-off Fourth of July party in their native Encinitas in 1997. That kicked off a ten-year run playing bars “along Highway 101 from O.B. to Hollywood.”

The project has been dormant partly because the funky Leucadia scene that nurtured them has changed.

“We played the Leucadian on Halloween right before they lost their music permit,” says Reynolds of the Coast Highway venue that pulled the plug on live bands four years ago. “That was our go-to location. We could roll our amps there from our homes. We once broke their one-night alcohol-selling record. We lost our home-court advantage....”

As Greater Encinitas has become overrun with more upscale hangouts, Reynolds says its hard to find the funk.

“Peabody’s [in Encinitas] wanted us to sign an agreement that we wouldn’t do the shenanigans that trashed the Leucadian: no throwing tortillas at ceiling fans...and they are still trying to kill music at the Kraken [in Cardiff] and that place has been there 40 years.”

  2. So were they selling drugs at the Leucadian to all the new gentrified residents? For shame.

  3. No one likes loud music and drunks peeking all of your property and breaking stuff next to their house

    1. 5:55 has only seen live chamber music and never had a drink. Too busy with nightly bible study and ETL meetings.

    2. No I drink.... I just feel empathy for anyone living next to you or close to a bar .... A total quality of life killer and property values tank ......

Drunks do not make decisions .

    3. 1:26, I'll drink to that.

Joking. I agree with you. We all were young and dumb once. Most young people grow out of it and become more responsible members of society. I try to be forgiving of their faults, but it would be a challenge to live near a rowdy bar.

    4. Oh do we have some Bible study maggots on this board! The Bar was there long before the wasp maggots moved in.

  4. If I were a bar owner, I would've been annoyed at all the glitter and confetti your go go dancers used to throw on the floor, and the entitled attitude of not only your band but your friends.

  5. Hey we love the blog. The reader story took an angle out of all the things we said and tried to get clicks, Leighton is known for trying to create controversy. As far as bar owners go, Marty at the Leucadian gave us permission to come in and decorate and make a mess because the numbers worked in his favor on the nights we played (same with Dave who used to own the Boardroom). When we played the Belly UP, Martini Ranch, the Tight End, The Kraken etc. they asked us not to make a mess of the place so we didn't. Also we would show up the next day and help clean the place up taking down all the curtains and decorations etc, Luke the morning maintenance guy at the leucadian would see us and roll his eyes. Sorry Luke!
Now back to the regularly scheduled (and much more important) posts on how Encinitas should deal with the railroad corridor and how do we keep Encinitas from turning into Irvine by the Sea...

  6. I'm pretty sure the Lo-Fi Nipple crowd these days has to be in bed by 10pm. Early Bird gig at 5pm. The 50 year old moms can show their saggy boobs to the band.

    1. 50 year old moms would have like 15 to 20 year old sons at the latest. WTF.

Why would a 50 YOM want to show her saggy boobs? More like she would show her $7to $10k boob job with perky C to D size boobs with full 3/4 inch depth nips blaring!

  8. Lo-Fi Nipple rocks! And their creative shows are a lot of fun. Leucadian, Kraken, Boardroom(RIP) are so much better than the yuppie/gentrified stuff popping up on 101 now.
