Shaffer: dirty tricks and debate-dodging cowards

Lisa Shaffer's newsletter:
Well, campaign season is in full swing, with several campaign kickoff events last weekend. Accusations of dirty tricks are already being made. Let me offer my view: telling the truth is not negative campaigning. Comparing one candidate's position and record against another, if done accurately, with sources noted, is not a dirty trick - it's educating voters. Distorting your opponent's record and misrepresenting votes - that's dirty politics. Claiming you're taking the high road while anonymous PACs spend enormous sums sending hit pieces on your opponent IS negative campaigning. Candidates are clever enough to maintain plausible deniability about negative mailers on their behalf, but if they wanted to keep things clean and positive, they could publicly disown the negative efforts and ask anyone who supports them to stop.

I also believe that refusing to participate in a debate organized by the League of Women Voters, even after being given a variety of dates to choose from, is cowardly and disrespectful of voters.
UPDATE: Though Shaffer weirdly refuses to tell anyone what she's talking about, Shaffer supporter Dennis Lees writes in the Coast News that Kristin Gaspar is refusing League of Women Voters debates.

  1. LOL.

"I also believe that refusing to participate in a debate organized by the League of Women Voters, even after being given a variety of dates to choose from, is cowardly and disrespectful of voters."

Of course Lisa feels this way, the last time LOWV North County were in-charge of an Encinitas Open Forum at The Grauer School, the League organized and executed a completely biased and ultimately nonsensical evening with the Council Candidates. Just because council candidates don't fall into one of Lisa/Teresa/Catherine traps doesn't mean that anyone who returned papers doesn't want to debate in a neutral Forum, it means, Lisa Birkenstock that your personal and failed attempts to fool the public into believing that bringing League cronies into the discussion makes your side of this political battle sound innocent and plausible.

How about asking the local Sports leagues to monitor a Forum? What? No?

Why not? Because you will be revealed as the true coward here?

    Tick, tick, tick...

    1. Agree about Julie. Miss her presence at Council Meetings; she made a difference, advocating for more honesty and transparency, more accountability to the public.

  7. Julie really does care, that's for sure. But, she has told me she is not cut out for politics and how nasty it can be. Still wondering if anyone knows who won't be debating? I also asked Lisa Shaffer in an email, but she may have not checked her mail in the last hour.

  8. I asked Lisa Shaffer in an email who she was talking about as far as the debates. Her is her response:
"It will become public when it becomes public. Sorry, I am not the one to answer your question." Her words, not mine.

  9. Sadly, the voters had their chance to vote for Julie, and most of them didn't. Such is life. Not really interested in Lisa's opinion on who should debate who. Is this about Gaspar not wanting to Debate Roberts? He would probably make mincemeat out of her, so it's probably a good idea...

  10. 3:59- I have a feeling, and cannot prove it, that is may be about Paul Gaspar not wanting to debate Catherine Blakespear. That's just my working theory, and as I said I cannot prove it.

    2. That's my working theory too. Paul Gaspar has spent his wife's time in office at city hall working in the background. He's not used to public scrutiny. I've heard he's getting very antsy about the public criticism.

    3. 4:34,

Why would LS call attention to Blakespear balking at a debate?

      Delete
    4. 6:56- She wouldn't. She is backing Blakespear. It has to be someone she doesn't like, as that's the way she does things. She is also backing Kranz. So that leaves either either Gaspar, depending on whether she is talking about the Supervisor race or the Mayor race, or the Council race, Muir, Graham, or Brandeburg. I think those are all that is running. Take your pick Email her yourselves and see if she will answer you.

    8. Paul's displeasure with public criticism is not new. Don't forget he pals around with the likes Of our favorite person Jerome Stocks. And, some of us know how Jerome can be when he gets a bit rattled. Paul is not used to being scrutinized, and in turn, he is turning a but nasty. He is targeting certain people he thinks are against him. And, he is playing a very mean, and stupid, game.

    2. 10:58- BUll. She is working under the guise of the NoRailTrail Group. What has she signed her name to? In fact, the group has been hijacked by about 7 people whose mission is to take down Catherine and have Gaspar, Muir and Graham elected. Go to the No Rail Trail FB site if you don't believe me. They use the Royal "We" when they post. 1000 people signed that site to try and influence the council to put the Cardiff Rail Trail on the west side instead of the east side. They "flipped" Catherine and got their way. Now they are out to get her, as they don't like what she did. And they are using a one issue site as a political site at this point. I signed that petition that went to the City Council and I am pretty angry that my name is now being used to support candidates I may or may not support. You don't have to believe a word I say, but it will be coming to you in a newspaper in the near future.

      Delete
    2. Your "understanding" is flawed. Unless Paul Gaspar is intimately knowledgeable of the city's inner workings, he will have to rely on generic statements in any debate - it worked for his wife. Blakespear should be able to joust with him verbally with no problem, and run circles around him with details.

      Delete
    3. 10:06 AM

"Unless Paul Gaspar is intimately knowledgeable of the city's inner workings ..." You do know his wife is mayor and I presume they talk to each other. I would expect they've talked about city business and will continue to do so in preparation for the debates. However, if Gaspar does come across as uninformed then he's a worse candidate for squandering the opportunity.

This doesn't mean he will say things you will agree with, just that he will be able to demonstrate familiarity with the topics.

      Delete
    4. Not necessarily. Dan Dalager was a councilman, and he never displayed any familiarity with the topics. And he was proud of it...

      Delete
    5. 10:39 AM His wife is Mayor, but just how aware is she of what really goes on? She has never demonstrated a detailed knowledge of issues. But then again, the electorate is generally clueless, so the level of sophistication of a candidate is considerably reduced by that factor. The debates require some finesse, as these citizens in attendance are the few that care what goes on.

      Delete
    6. Dalager was hilarious at the debates - his kitchengate issue had been revealed, and he looked like a deer in the headlights. He stammered semi-incoherently about wandering around in the hills as a kid and was completely disjointed in his presentation.
Later, Dumanis (the straw funded crook) cut him major slack for his follies and let him off the hook with a slap on the wrist. It's all about knowing the right people.

      Delete
    7. Paul Gaspar is as clueless as his wife. You don't have to pretend to know anything when you are bought and paid for by the developers.

    1. Oh, please God, no; not another roundabout pusher!

  19. 4:39pm Also, Tasha is hand picked by Leichstag. Ain't life wonderful folks, with such limited choices? We are destined to have to vote for, rather against, a democrat or repugnican based platform. The lesser of two evils, although evil doesn't really apply. There is no actual evil choice at work, but the same choice remains.

If Muir and Gaspar and whats his name Phil, ha, can be sent packing, perhaps we can swallow this situation for the time being.

What Catherine and company need is that fourth candidate to seal the deal. Can Tony Brandenburg be that person? Would he possibly align with Gaspar and Muir and the other stranger or choose to join Catherine and co.?

Tony B. needs to declare just where and who he stands with. Blakespear or Gaspar. We have to believe he is being called upon to join one side or the other.

Tony Brandenburg wassupp, my brother? The choice to be a winner or a loser is in your hands. Both sides need a fourth candidate. Where will you stand?

Inquiring minds should want to know and know pretty darn quick.

Candidates on their own stand little chance, as it has become obvious that the team plan has become the modis operandi for this go around.

It is the white hats versus the black hats. Which is which is for every concerned voter to determine for themselves.

Now isn't the way forward as clear as mud? Have at it. A clear choice is there, if you let yourselves see it. For Tony B, you have to align with one or the other and the sooner the better.

  20. The Supervisor candidate forum hosted by the Encinitas-Leucadia Town Council has been canceled since Kristin Gaspar declined to participate. The new schedule is:
    Tuesday, October 4: Mayoral candidates*
Tuesday, October 18: City Council candidates
*If either candidate declines to participate the other will be invited to participate in the City Council forum.

    2. Good idea.

      K. Gaspar's big cheese Republican consultant advised her not to participate in debates.

Goes to show how dishonest she is. She's not real enough to debate her opponent in public.

She deserves to lose, as does her disingenuous husband. They are out for themselves, not the community they pretend to represent.

      Shame on both Gaspars.

      Delete
    3. Gaspar's handlers know that she is too vacuous to handle a debate that might be substantive in nature. Her style is to rely on vague clichés and generalized buzz words; ie, honesty, integrity, American flag, etc. She is better off to lay low and not reveal her ambiguity with the facts; her handlers figure the voters won't notice her absence. She is a dolt and already has stretched the Peter Principle to its outer limits by being Mayor. End this travesty now and vote for Roberts!

      Delete
    4. Gaspar is as empty headed as she looks. She can not stand on her own or think for herself. She has had her boy toys pulling the strings for her. Now, when it's time to stand alone, she runs, she hides, she is not available to take part in a debate. She doesn't want the voters to know how much she doesn't know.

Time for Gaspar to hit the road.

      Vote for Dave Roberts.

  21. Lisa Shaffer was the one who was pushing donors to purchase naming rights for Encinitas public building. Though it is and was against code, she brought it up several years ago, so her claims that the Mizel Library criticism was unjustified is just another of her many lies.

Truth be told, she heads a Fund Raising Subcommittee where these ideas were discussed in detail!!

I don't appreciate that Lisa is happy to sell off the identity of community projects that represent years and years of citizens' sustained effort and sacrifice. She is venal and stupid and is ready to monetize our work and commitment for sale to the highest bidder.

Maybe she thinks that her neat idea of the "Living Museum" is a good substitute. NOT!!

Even Jerome and Danny D. knew when to back out and leave well enough alone. She just keeps trying to convince us of the alternative universe according to Lisa Shaffer!

    4. Wow, I think many have/have had issues, but acting from a pathological state can be defined as acting without conscience. To me, that level of mental disability fits more with DD and JS, not LS.

TBarth is more of a grudge holder; scornful; LS typically wants to have the first and last word . . .

      Delete
    5. Change that last sentence to "has to" have the first and last words and you've got an accurate picture of Shaffer's persona.

If that is not an issue, I don't know what is. She does not know when to capitulate because she absolutely, positively, has no idea when to stop and admit defeat.

    6. Shaffer is not running again, so to me it's a waste of time to go over what she did or didn't do.

We need to be focusing on those who are running and why or why not they should be elected.

  22. WC right on!

Lets encourage Dave Roberts and the sponsors to hold the the event anyway, and in spite of the princess's lack of courage to attend. I am sure there would be many who would appreciate the opportunity to have a one on one with Dave.

He is our champion and has proved his dedication over and over. As for our mayor, ha, not so much. We can revel in knowing she is gone from our body politic and once Paul is gone, we will be all the better off for it.

Hold the event as planned. Call it a non-debate or an Evening with Dave, we will pack the room. Bring it on.

  24. Gaspar is a intellectual liability when exposed in a public forum. She is ignorant of the issues, other than those her developer backers prime her with. This quantum political attempt to try to become Supervisor is testing the power of money to turn the pig's ear into a silk purse. Gaspar may be qualified to recommend what type of mascara to buy at Macy's, but little else. Her candidacy is also a test of the gullibility of the electorate - she is completely unqualified for office and would be a disaster in the role of Supervisor.
