What if they threw an election and no one ran?

At this point in 2012, there were already seven candidates for three seats on the council (Shoja Naimi, who pulled papers, didn't file, but Thomas Brophy subsequently joined the list).

In 2014, there were five candidates for mayor and four candidates for one council seat.

This year with the mid-August filing deadline rapidly approaching, there are only four announced council candidates for three council seats: two incumbents and two party establishment candidates.  And if Blakespear wins mayor, there will be a fourth open council seat (presumably appointed by the majority).  Are we going to have even any protest candidates to vote for?

  1. I'm sure your regular readers who routinely complain about the council's decisions just haven't got around to pulling their papers. The right way to act is so obvious, at least according to them, that I'm sure many of them can't wait to show us how it's done. Come on down!

  2. The prospect of having any community defending candidates step up is as gloomy as our skies on this final Monday of the filing period.

It looks like the only choice we may have with our votes is to deny certain candidates a seat on the dais and even that may be tough, considering the odds we have going on in this last week of filing.

If anyone knows of a way to make the best of a bad situation a little better, please advise. I would like to know if my vote can make a difference. As of today, I don't see it and would like to. Bring it on.

    1. Good news! You have until August 17 to convince your neighbor to run because the deadline is extended for everyone when any incumbent doesn't run again.

  3. I would run as a citizen with no prior experience would people vote for me? What about campaign funding? I have none. I love Encinitas and want to preserve it.

I think it's your turn to run. Sculpin and I will run next time, wearing Banana Splits masks.

  6. What a novel idea. It would be great if those running for office would withdraw their names.

I will not vote for any of them.

  8. It's like shooting ducks in the barrel for the developer/special interests group - just stack the deck with several candidates and you're assured of having some of your shills elected. Muir will probably get back in and he has been clueless about what a council person is supposed to do. How did he pull off a career as a fire chief? Obviously there isn't much to it, other than occupying space. He succeeded there immeasurably!

    2. Unfortunately, that appears to be a common attitude here. Better to sit here in anonymity taking potshots without having to demonstrate any capability. That way they can continue to feel superior without suffering any criticisms themselves. The down side is nobody will create funny spellings of your name.

What an impressive comeback. I'll bet you hold your own on the playground. Too bad school is starting in just a few weeks. I'm sure you'll impress the kids there as well.

    7. What is it with this person who is so focused on school age intelligence. Take your head out of your backend and come to the adult world. Otherwise, you sound so juvenile.

I am voting in current density and character. No on housing element and yes on Councilmember W.C. Varones.

  14. The Mizel Library is on the city council agenda for next week.
One of the ways the city can terminate the agreement -

City may terminate the agreement (and all related naming rights) in the event that: 1)the Grant is not paid in a timely manner (after notice and opportunity to cure) or 2)Patricia Mizel (or Donor) is convicted of, or pleads nolo contendere to, a crime involving moral turpitude (upon such termination, City is entitled to retain any Grant proceeds paid by Donor, but Donor is not obligated to pay any future installments)[Section 6, Section 7]

    1. Conveniently, for the council, it is the last item on the agenda. There is a message in that. Not too many stick around that late, so council will probably give it their blessing without a blink of an eye.

Another slam to the citizens by GASpar since she sets the agenda.

  15. It's obvious now why Dumanis doesn't take any action against corrupt officials - she is ducking her own corruption scandal. Is there an honest politician left in the area (or country)?

    1. The smoking gun of corruption covers Dumanis now - she accepted illegal campaign contributions and tried to hide it. She should be thrown out of office.

    3. How clever Shaffer is. How diabolical. Didn't she think we would notice even though he has a different last name. What a fiendish plan, waiting until Paul Gaspar pulled papers to do the same. Doesn't she know that mayor is only a two year gig. And how does Don Barth figure into the plan? Will these cruel machinations ever stop?

I guess you never figured it out. Neither she or he are running. You'll have to move on to another conspiracy which I'm sure you have no shortage of.

  18. This from the city website -
*Please note that per Government Code, the City has approved temporarily designating one Council seat to a two-year term to evenly stagger the election of Council Members due to the establishment of an elected Mayor. (Ord. 2014-05). For the 2016 General Municipal Election only, the candidate elected who receives the least votes shall serve a two-year term, and in the event of a tie for second place, the two-year term seat shall be decided by lot. (Government Code Section 34906) (Ord. 2014-05)

  19. Geez, Slimy mikey. Why do you even bother crawling out from under the rock you reside under? Sheila has nothing to do with the discussion at hand and yet you are compelled to mention her.

It has to be envy, since she has served our community far more than you ever could imagine in the legend of your own minds reality.

Anyone that associates with this despicable character should be boycotted. The handful who are, should know better and deserve to be outed, so we all can choose to do business with them or not.

The rot inside will have its say someday mikey, and we will rejoice at your misfortune that has been so well earned. Karma is a beyatch and you have plenty coming your way.
