Is there a doctor in the house?

From the Inbox:
A lot of us would gently roll our eyes when confronted with the Art History PhD who insists on being called "doctor." But few are aware that the use of "doctor" as a title in a variety of healthcare roles is controversial, because it can be confusing to patients. The problem is serious enough that the American Physical Therapy Association has issued guidelines that any Physical Therapist using the title "Doctor" in a clinical setting must clarify that they are in fact not a physician.

In the context of the controversy, it is noteworthy that Encinitas mayoral candidate "Doctor" Paul Gaspar chooses to use the title, but certainly not disqualifying. The fact that he uses the title 17 times on the brief homepage of his campaign website begins to raise one eyebrow.

But, it's still not disqualifying.

Where it really goes wrong is the large-font campaign slogan that Paul Gaspar puts at the top of every single page of his campaign website:

"Prescribing Common Sense for Encinitas"

Prescribing. That's worth both eyebrows and a "wow."

pre·scribe
prəˈskrīb/
verb
(of a medical practitioner) advise and authorize the use of (a medicine or treatment) for someone, especially in writing. "Dr. Greene prescribed magnesium sulfate" synonyms: write a prescription for, authorize "the doctor prescribed antibiotics"

Do you get it? He's a "doctor" and he's going to "prescribe" common sense for Encinitas.

There's one tiny problem. Paul Gaspar has never been to medical school.

He doesn't have an M.D. He's not a physician.

Paul Gaspar can't "prescribe" anything, because he's not that kind of doctor, but he certainly wants you to think so.

Without an advanced degree in Psychology, I can't tell you if the use of these terms is evidence of a specific mental disorder. But as a lay person, I can state the obvious: that Paul Gaspar thinks he's smart enough to dance on the head of a pin and play clever word games in an attempt to mislead and confuse the good people of Encinitas.

That's a skill set we've seen often enough in politics, and it is disqualifying.
Well, if Kristin Gaspar can call herself an "educator" on the ballot based on volunteering in her kids' schools, we guess Paul can play "doctor."

  2. Ha! What a tool..... Lot's of Ph.D's in my family, and they are very protective, possessive and proud of their designation, and they would be the first to tell you that the proper convention would be:

    Dr. Joe Smith, Ph.D.

They would never, ever want their designation to be confused with that of a physician. That would be disrespectful to their accomplishments, and to the accomplishments of the physician!

This guy is playing doctor, and wants the rest of us to play along in his fantasy too.

He uses "Doctor" 17 times on the homepage, and "Paul" appears only three times. Makes you wonder if he makes his wife call him "Dr. Gaspar."

    Scary ego.

  4. Last January Bob Bonde himself asked the Council to address him as Doctor when he and Sheila Kranz and Shaffer were poised to close down the fire stations in downtown ad Village Park.

Gaspar is probably a lot closer to being a 'Doctor' than Big Bad Bob. HE has a scary ego!

    1. There is no "closer," when it comes to the power to prescribe controlled substances.

Either you went to med school, or you didn't.

Paul Gaspar didn't, and he shouldn't be implying that he did.

Contempt prior to investigation not only makes you lazy, and uninformed but also sounding like an idiot.

Dr. Bonde has a PHD. After serving in the Marines, defending his family and yours, he became an Executive in the California University system.

I became alarmed when I saw Paul Gaspar's sign stating he was a Doctor. He certainly seems to have built a good business, but is he a doctor?

I researched the matter and the Gaspar site states he has a DPT ( Doctor of physical therpay). I then looked up what a DPT is, apparently it is an additional 3 or so years of schooling in PT. Good for the DPT's.

There is however controversy on what this DPT means. Some claim it is a ruse of smoke and mirrors to mislead patients. For instance are all the therapist at Gaspar physical therpay all DPT's? Their ads claim Gaspar Doctor's of PT - are they all DPT's?

Others say the DPT is used by some to charge more.

I then researched the American Medical Assn- they don'the use the Doctor title. What does that tell us?

I think it tells us Paul Gaspar is not a medical doctor. That he represents himself as one tells us more.

You can't fix a rigged system by electing the people who rigged it.

  6. Interesting post and responses. I have to admit I thought it odd that he Paul used Dr. Paul Gaspar DPT. For example a Ph.D., might use Dr. but they shouldn't then put Ph.D. after it. It is both redundant and is not the way those who have Ph.D.'s have been taught to do it. I am not a PT, so maybe their training is different than in other fields. But it is apparent that Paul Gaspar wants you to know he is a Doctor, which must make him smarter than the average person. We all know that's not true of anyone with a M.D., DDS, Ph.D. DPT, etc. All a Doctor title tells us is the person went to school longer than most and was motivated to do so. I have met some pretty stupid Doctors in my life, of all kinds. I have also met some brilliant people who have HSG after their names (High School Graduate, in case any of you want to add that to your resume:) All I do know is I am not voting for this man, and it has nothing to do with his title. I see him as ingenious, egotistical, arrogant, not very well informed about our community and its surrounding areas. Just as Phil Graham talks about Encinitas having "bays" Paul talks about other nonsensical ideas. Ironically I just got a prescription from an M.D. for Physical Therapy. I can assure you I will not go to one of Gaspar's PT places. I wonder what his employees think of him?

    1. I agree with pretty much everything you say. Also, Dr. should be used only in a professional context. The nurse or hygienist can say, the doctor will see you now. A student may refer to a professor as Dr. No one calls a lawyer, pharmacist, or PT a doctor even though they may have JD, DPharm, and DPT degrees. FYI - Gaspar PT is well regarded in the San Diego PT community. They have very well qualified PTs. PT, yes, vote for him, no.

    2. In society the title Doctor has signified ethics. Do not harm is a medical ethic, where the Doctor, a supposed trusted member of the community, acts in the best interest of the patient.

Unfortunately, as society and ethics have devolved many quacks now find ways to abuse the doctor patient relationship. Some suggest calling the doctor by their first name - well if that provider does not respect their title why should we?

The AMA American Medical Association does not give validity to the DPT as Doctor.

I am a former patient of hers and personally I think she is the best psychologist I have been to, and unfortunately, I have been to a lot. She makes perfect sense to me, and I get rather tired of certain people who may not even know her, say all kinds of inaccurate things about her. When I went to her, I called her Dr. once, and she said "if you would like to, please call me Lorri". She is not pretentious, as those of you who dislike her keep saying. Yes, she is active in our community, and some don't like her, but for me, if she would have run I would have voted for her. Paul Gaspar has talked about suing her because she has spoken out against him about his involvement, or lack thereof, in the NoRailTrial saga. 8. Paul Gaspar's information says that he received his Doctor of Therapy degree from USC in 1992. However, the information on the USC website indicates that they began awarding Doctor of Therapy degrees in 1998.

Something is out of whack, so to speak.

Here is the information from the USC website:

    About DPT

    Why the DPT?
The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at the University of Southern California prepares graduates to be autonomous practitioners, capable of evaluating and treating patients without the need for referral from another practitioner, but ready to work in collaboration with other health professionals. The Doctor of Physical Therapy is the authoritative practitioner in the diagnosis and treatment of movement dysfunction.

For more information about the DPT degree, visit the APTA website.

The History Behind the USC DPT
In 1998, the University of Southern California awarded the DPT degree to graduates of the program in physical therapy. USC has been a leader in the transition to doctoral level education in physical therapy. The need for a primary care practitioner who can diagnose and treat the causes of movement dysfunction and the increased scientific and evidence base for physical therapy are forces for the dramatic shift to a doctoral degree as the primary preparation for a professional degree in physical therapy.

At the federal level for 40 years the uniparty of Bush, Clinton and Obama have treated American citizens with the same disregard, while enriching and rewarding their globalist banker friends.

Bad trade deals are written to benefit insiders and the media misleads the public. Immigration Laws are ignored and the media misleads the public. The middle east is destabilized, and the media sells the fake pretenses to the public. Yellow cake Powell and the architect of Benghazi Hillary.

There is an alternative candidate willing to enforce existing immigration laws to protect legal American citizens. There is an alternative candidate who wants to have fair trade that benefits legal American citizens and not globalist bankers. There is an alternative candidate willing to confront and expose the lies and misrepresentations of a corrupt media complex.

This silly season is not silly in the slightest. It is crucial to our town to demand that our elected reps represent us. We do not have a choice when it comes to our hosing plan this go around. Only Tony B declares himself opposed to the urbanization scam that the city is offering.

Where was Tony B when the Planning Commission had the opportunity to offer our council the option of mandating a reasonable 25% of density projects be low income units?

Only Greg Drakos held onto his support for this mandate, while Tony B and Glen O'Grady folded their temporary majority after Tasha demanded they thwart this requirement before it ever got off the ground. This cannot be denied. It is in the public record for anyone who is doubtful.

However, he is not a medical doctor, so in my opinion, he sounds arrogant, has low self-esteem (or he wouldn't use the title) and is narcissistic. Sort of like his Presidential pick, Trump. 32. Someone on another thread, or perhaps on another blog, said about 1500 people signed the NoRailTrail petition that went straight to the City Council, although most people who signed did not know that. Now, all of us who signed have our information out there, as it is public information.

Yesterday I received a birthday greeting from a physical therapy place I used to go to, which was not Gaspars. Interesting because they had my legal name on the envelope, not the name I go by. This means they have access to my insurance information. The fact I never went to any Gaspar Physical Therapy office bothers me. Where did they get my name? Then today, an email from Gaspar Physical Therapy appears on my email account. It was something about how to do something. I didn't read, or watch the video. Where is he getting these names and emails? Has anyone else had this happen to them? It appears as if he might have bought the PT place I had gone to in the past, as the address was from the old place. So, if he bought it, does that make it OK to use our personal information without asking? I really don't know. It just seemed strange.

I do know that the 1500 names are public information, as a friend of mine did a CPRA request and got them all. If that person can do it, so can any candidate. Paul has claimed to be one of the first defenders of the NoRail Trail. The website for this group is hidden very deep into cyberspace and 3 people I know have tried to find out who owns the domain. Why is it so secretive? And, if Paul was in on the NoRailTrail from the beginning, perhaps he and his wife picked the first group of people on the list that Catherine changed up. Remember Jerome Stocks was on that first list, as well as many of Gaspar's cronies. Something's going on but I am still not sure what it is. All I know is he and his new friends from the No Rail Trail (all 6 of them) are doing some fancy dancing. Better keep an eye on it.

    1. 10:37 You are "the shrink" posting anonymous. You are as dumb as you look.

    2. 11:08- So why do you hate Lorri Greene so much? What has she done to you? How do you know she posted this, and if she did why do you care? Some of us are getting tired of your constant B.S. about Lorri, as everyone knows who you are talking about. Tell you what. If you think she is dumb and looks it, prove it. People like you disgust me.

    3. 10:37 - funny enough I got a fundraising email from "Dr" Gaspar and it was sent to my personal email address. Where did he get that? I never went to his clinic and am not a supporter. All the other candidate emails were opt in. Very very odd.

  33. This is the real Lorri Greene posting. I once walked with Martin Luther King. I asked him how he handled the hate toward him. His answer was "If everyone likes you, you stand for nothing". So, if someone wants to post that I am dumb as I look, which I can't quite figure out what that means, by all means go for it. I have been around way too long to let some anonymous blogger get under my skin. I will point out, however, that this post was not about me. If, however, EU wants to do post about me, I would be happy to share what I really think.

    This is the real poster.

  35. Where did the people who signed the petition think it was going? A petition sent to council e-mail addresses is part of the public record. Candidates and businesses are free to use the information.

    1. 4:48- I signed, but I thought it was just a bunch of people signing and then the NoRailTrail people would take the petition to the City. I didn't realize it would go to the entire City Council and it did not state that it would. I guess I was just didn't understand that all of my personal information would be made public. Lesson learned.

  36. 11:08, 5:12, 7:10 - whoever you are, you crossed the line with those bullying and mean spirited personal attacks on Lorri. It's one thing to attack a public figure - fair game because they stepped into the arena - but this is different. You are nothing but trolls (the adult versions of a 13 year old playground bullies). What the f*** did Lorri ever do to you to deserve this kind of venom?

  37. 11:18 PM She expressed her opinion. That can be a perilous gamble these days.

  38. Looks like WC nuked the most outrageous posts with the truly nasty personal attacks. Yay. Right thing to do. I don't mind the rough and tumble nature of the debate here and all should have thick skins and be ready to take some punishment - but when attacks are on a specific individual by name with appalling insults, slander, and implied threats then that's too much even for EU.

    1. Trump is the model. He's lowered the bar. He's given everybody permission to be crass, to lie with abandon, to be limitlessly selfish, egotistical and narcissistic. If he wins in November, the country will go down the drain and cease to stand for ideals that other countries and people follow.

  41. Two years ago, Mike Andreen mysteriously got ahold of the names of the original 95 HEU parcel owners. He then invited them to an "informational luncheon" about the joys of being identified as an upzone parcel winner.

Guest of honor? Kristen Gaspar. So who slipped Mikey the list?

    1. Conflict of interest $tock$! One wonders how many back room deals he pulled off during his council run. I'm sure a lot of the developers have bought their insurance policies thru him. He was apparently able to disguise any other kickbacks, unlike his buddy the kitchen chef, Dalager.

    2. Sssstocks was not on Council then. Gaspar, however, was.

    3. I don't get it! This blog can attack others, but when some are attacked they call foul. Case in point - you can't trash Lorri because it's not fair, but have at with Stocks, Barth, etc. Wow, I didn't ever think I would be backing those two together. Don't be Hypocrites! What's good for one is good for others!!!

    4. It's the nature of the attacks as well as the target. Did you see the offending posts before they got taken down? They bordered on hate speech. They made awful, slanderous, destructive accusations. And they were directed at someone by name, not a time stamp attached to an anonymous poster. Also, that someone is a private citizen, not a public figure (e.g. a candidate, official, or former office-holder).

  43. Stocks has always been in the background, even after he left the Council. He is one of fundraisers for Gaspar. And, he was also behind the infamous HEU parcel owners luncheon. That one is not hard to prove if you just dig a bit.
