Pedestrian killed by train in Leucadia

Times of San Diego:
A pedestrian was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Leucadia Wednesday morning.

The collision was reported shortly before 6:50 a.m. on the tracks at Leucadia Boulevard and North Coast Highway 101, San Diego County Sheriff’s Lt. Jason Vickery said.

Investigators believe the pedestrian, whose age and gender were not immediately available, attempted to cross the tracks while the crossing arms were down and was struck by the train, Vickery said.

North County Transit officials implemented a “bus bridge” to help passengers get to their destinations while train service was halted.

The tracks were reopened between the Poinsettia and Encinitas stations by 8:35 a.m., but North County Transit officials warned that delays were still possible due to restricted speed through Leucadia.
Meanwhile, Carlsbad to lower train tracks.

  1. "Attempted to cross the tracks while the crossing arms were down" should have been the headline.

  2. Solana Beach trenched the tracks, Carlsbad will trench the tracks, not even a consideration in Encinitas. How shortsighted and embarrassing!

    1. Soooo, trenching the train tracks somehow will prevent people from being stupid?

    2. Twenty-seven deaths by train in 29 years in Encinitas, one in Solana Beach.

    3. It's pretty obvious watching pedestrians and bikers daily in Encinitas, people are way fucking less equipped for survival here. Born roadkill. 27 deaths vs 1 = natural selection.

    4. The deceased most likely expected the train to come to a stop for them. That, or someone to come and rebuild the tracks to go around where they felt entitled to walk.

  3. Paint some sharrows on the tracks. That should fix it.

  4. More like Solana Beach trenched the tracks, Carlsbad will trench the tracks, and Del Mar will trench the tracks, but not even a consideration in Encinitas. How shortsighted and embarrassing!

Encinitas has gone the way of looking to Oceanside as its future. Puke.

    2. There are four RR crossings in Solana Beach. Five if you count Via de la Valle.

  5. Obviously a suicide. Who would see an oncoming train and think they could beat it, unless it was quite a distance away? I guess the suicide prevention signs aren't that effective.

  6. If you trench the tracks, thousands of homes that are walking distance to the beach suddenly won’t be.

    1. Totally wrong. The opposite of the facts. Have you been to Solana Beach? How many crossings are there above the trench?

    2. Not enough. Currently, the number of crossing points in Encinitas is unlimited. There’s one literally right in front of my house.

    3. And crossing at anywhere but the grade crossing and Swami's underpass is illegal and subject to big fines.

    4. Nope.

Cross nearly every day. Sometimes in the presence of cops. Been doing it for years.

      No fines.

    5. Lucky you. I know several people who have been stopped and fined.
