Blakespear bike obstacles' latest victim is 10-year-old boy

NextDoor:
FYI, be careful while riding your bikes (or jogging) on Hwy 101 between SoBe and Cardiff in the recently renovated bike lanes. The city just installed intermittent curbs along them...but they are already proving to be very hazardous. My 10 year old was riding just behind me heading south on the bridge that spans the inlet at Cardiff Reef when someone (apparently.) cut him off and he swerved to avoid crashing into a jogger and his fromt wheel hit the curb. I heard the crash and a terrified “Dad!!”, when I immediately turmed around to see my son, 20 feet behind me, laying in the middle of the driving lane 1 (closest to the bike lane). A civilian thankfully jumped into street to steer traffic away, and luckily there were no oncoming cars at that particular moment, otherwise this would likely be a much different post...which is what Im hoping to avoid for myself and others.

My son is doing fine save being scared to death, bumping his head and chipping his helmet) and skinning his knee. However, there were two different passerbys (as well as the attending state park trooper that provided first aid) that all unsolicitedly mentioned how poorly designed and dangerous the new curbs are. Again, these curbs are brand new and were being installed on the long open beach stretch heading south (after the Chart House) just two days ago when we were out on another ride.

Anyway, as the weather is nice and many of us are enjoying getting outside and staying active, let’s be extra vigilent and cautious in all of our activities, especially when it comes to crowded/condensed bike lanes that in my humble opinion, have a major design flaw in confested areas.

This is the fifth known victim of Blakespear's insane bike obstacles in two weeks, and the first not to end up in the hospital.

  1. The problem is that people should stop driving cars.

    1. According to Blakespear. If she doesn't get her way using the carrot, she uses the stick. Come to think of it, she usually goes straight to the stick.

  4. Everyone appalled write to the city clerk and ask that your comments be read aloud at the 6 pm meeting this Wednesday.

Be sure to get your comments in by 3 pm or they will not be read and instead will likely die a quiet death in the round file. According to the city, they do like to delete those pesky emails fast.

There are two meetings on one day this week because the mayor cancelled too many regular meetings during the rest of the month. She split them a few hours apart with one held during working hours. A neat little trick when you want to reduce public participation.

  5. Such a wicked wicked EVIL woman. Shun her. Turn your back to her when she speaks. Local business should lock the door when she approaches. TYRANT!!

  8. Anyone who rides a bicycle has to take responsibility for controlling it through some combination of steering, braking, and common-sense decision-making. If the conditions are not suitable for cycling because of a nearby curb, combined with the presence of pedestrians and joggers who are illegally using a dedicated Class IV bike path, then the cyclist has to slow down enough for the unfortunate conditions or dismount and walk their bike until conditions improve. Although I wish the cyclists had not been injured, the city should not pay a dime for any of these accidents.

    1. I would have to agree on this one. It is a hard world out there.

  9. I am confused here. Is the path exclusively for cyclists, or can it also be used by walkers and joggers?

    1. 5 accidents in 10 days is not "every little 10 year old boy." These are not "unfortunate conditions." All but the kid went to the hospital by ambulance. One guy has a head injury, another a broken pelvis. Virtually all didn't see "professional staff's" design until it was too late. This is staff error, not rider error.

This is what you get when you combine Catherine's biking agenda and her professional staff: disaster.

Put another way, how many accidents have to occur here to equal one Robert Walker? Blakespear knee jerked faster than you can say Jack Rabbit over her pal's accident. But give her 5 in 10 days and she goes on on radio silence.

Probably waiting for her bff attorney friend to hand her the script. Efforts over on EV didn't pan out so well.

  13. The obstacle curbs in Cardiff are idiotic but also a distraction.
The hotel project at la Costa has entered a stage where there are hundreds more laborers, working in an ever-more-closed environment. These laborers are coming from all over SoCal and without screening at the jobsite will surely make this site the primary vector for spreading covid into Leucadia and Encinitas.
Don't forget your hand sanitizer at Berry Bros!
Is Encinitas monitoring this work site for safety? Or are they only tasked with approving every proposed build?
    Hotel Covinarnia!

    1. These "still under construction" and "nothing to see here" comments do not excuse the mayor's headstrong and careless personality and the awful results.

She is taking a beating over on the new cyclist Facebook page, and rightly so. She had the chance to make improvements safely and in a way that did not result in an injury every other day. If under construction, the lanes should not have been available to anyone. Simple and obvious, just not to her.

Once Blakespear's made up her mind it's her way or the highway. Like her mentor hero Shaffer, she knows best. What we have in Blakespear is not an elected representative, but a dictator.

What's amazing is that anyone is left willing even to attempt mopping up after her. This cycling fiasco is just one of a growing list of her messes.

  16. In Encinitas it's OK to make huge, shitty. poorly planned, unnecessary and expensive changes to things that weren't broken to begin with because "legacy".

    1. Ya! I feel the same. If it aint broke - dont fix it! The city just loves to spend our money on silly infrastructure. By the way destroying nice trees along the way!
