The climate crisis is our greatest existential threat. Declaration of a Climate Emergency shows that the City of Encinitas recognizes the egregious dangers imposed by climate change, and that urgent action is required. Perhaps it may seem extreme and alarmist, but it not extreme to respect the overwhelming scientific consensus and to respond accordingly. And it is far more alarming to ignore facts and to take no action when imminent danger threatens.UPDATE: Resolution doesn't pass as commissioners can't agree on wording, residents wonder what emergency powers council wants to seize.
Unless we act quickly and decisively, our civilization will be ravaged by climate chaos characterized by unprecedented droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, famines, fires, heat waves, and sea-level elevations. Adverse events such as these are already occurring.

Florida has already lost billion in real estate as well as several other low lying coastal states. Homes right on the water actually sell for less than those on the water but with a buffer or natural protection. Insurance for ocean front homes is more expensive and sometimes unattainable.
B) because they will be long dead before it becomes a problem. We are talking about 1” a decade, its a long term problem that needs attention now.

We pretty much fixed it through effective government regulation and the 1990 Clean Air Act, which required industrial smokestacks to install chemical scrubbers to remove sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. A wonderful example of effective and efficient government intervention to solve a pressing problem.
